I’m new to the forum, so I’m not sure where my take falls, but outside a few wins I’m really not a fan of what Disney has done with Star Wars. I was always a big lover of the EU; so my personal canon is really just ‘Legends’ and as much of TCW as can be fit without contradiction the original Clone Wars media project I grew up with.

Pretty much the same here.

Obi-Wan knowing Anakin took the name Vader doesn’t mean he knew that Vader survived past their fight in episode 3 though, right? The fair assumption would be that the guy you left chopped up and on fire did in fact die from those injuries. Isn’t that the surprising information, and not that Anakin changed his name? I haven’t seen it, but that’s the impression I got.

If you had been set to write an Obi show and had gone back and refreshed yourself on the canon - scenes and dialogue made in both PT and OT - would you have written Obi as unaware?

jedi_bendu said:

Exactly. This claim is just a bad attempt to slander the creatives behind this show. In episode 2 Obi-wan hears the name “Lord Vader” and visibly reacts to it. What he didn’t know was that Vader was still alive.

Of course, as always - the fans are to blame. Instead of pointing out a blatant result of incompetency, we should all rally around the writers and help them out with our fan theory gymnastics. Force forbid Disney actually do their own job well to begin with.

Saying that Star Wars is too centered on Tatooine is like asking why books about World War 1 and World War 2 keep talking about Germany.

Is it? It plays a big role in ANH and TPM, but it’s very arguable whether the movies were actually centered around Tatooine - at least TPM - cause Naboo and the space/Death Star settings mogged Tatooine in both of them. None of the other movies were centered around it. In fact, the best prequel (ROTS) and the best original (ESB) had the least to do with it, so maybe it’s time to take a hint.

I’m of two minds on Movie vs TV as well.

I like the less rushed format of TV. Most of episode 3 was exactly what I was hoping for with this series (Ben with a day job and Ben & little Leia). However, all that I enjoyed so much this week, the lengthy walk through the mining colony and the safe house, would have been lost or severely trimmed for time in a two-hour film. You just couldn’t burn a quarter of a film on that character depth and deeper pace. I’m fine with the lesser production value because for me, story comes first.

In defense of a film, we would have bigger better production values but how much better? Enough to sacrifice depth and story? Maybe not and as I just mentioned above, not for me. After the mess that was Solo, I think we’re years away from a theatrical event in the franchise. That may not be a bad thing.

Well, Star Wars movies - with the possible exception of Rise of Skywalker - aren’t exactly Michael Bay’s Transformers. There’s plenty of slow scenes and stuff that gets called boring. The first chunk of ANH, for example, is just two droids wandering through a desert. And the double edged sword of TV series is, while they might have material for 4 hours, if they need to fill out 8 hours then water gets dumped in and it’s hard to argue this show isn’t watered down.

But true, bombing of Solo might be the reason for more series and less movies. With Darth Maul cameoing there and Vader in Rogue One, I expected those two to come together and work as set ups for the content in the Kenobi movie that was being developed. Thought maybe Vader, in this movie continuity, was responsible for cyborging Maul back into fighting shape and we’d see two of the most visually iconic baddies together on screen vs Obi Wan. Anyway, trialing off here.

Yeah, series vs film. Everything has its upsides and it’s usually based on the type of conflict you’re exploring. McKee explains it better within the first minute here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MMrPdxLqIlU

I haven’t watched the show yet. But from what I’m hearing about it, I definitely wish it had been a 2-hour movie, instead. A movie would have less filler and higher production value, and it would complete an anthology film “trilogy.” I’m interested to see what fan editors are able to do with this show.

I wish Disney and Lucasfilm hadn’t abandoned the anthology film format.

True. “Kenobi: A Star Wars Story” or something like that would’ve been neat enough.

I’m really enjoying this show - and I’m pretty ruthless these days re Star Wars canon. To me it is (so far) bridging the gap between eps 3 and 4 in a way that makes the transition smoother. When I used to marathon the 6 films, it never felt like eps 3 and 4 were in the same universe, irrespective of the Tantive as a bookend. To me this series is just prequel-ish enough to emerge from ep 3 and just OT enough to slide into ep 4. It seems to me that such matters as the understated lightsaber duels, the measured pacing, and the not-as-eleborate-as-the-prequels environments are simply a stylistic choice to make this transition really work whilst also providing some of the emotional beats (ie a stronger tension between Obi Wan and Owen) that the prequels lacked. Of course the saga is a continuity shambles in general, so I’m curious as to how it will all hold up (at least in my mind) when this series is done…

I agree with this, too, for the most part. I don’t think the cheapness isn’t a budgetary cope, but it being more toned down does help the transition. I’m hoping there’s enough here to make a fun fan edit out of cause it’s not all bad.

I don’t like how this episode looked (as well as other scenes in the previous episodes) but I don’t want to blame the crew members because I think it’s more than likely a budget issue. Deborah Chow and Chung-hoon Chung have proven themselves to be fantastic in their field in the past. I just don’t think this series, which was always going to be a big deal, has a big enough budget to make it work.

For example, I love the idea of travelling to a once-beautiful planet which has been ruined by the Empire and I think that’s a great, grim setting for an Obi-wan vs Vader duel. However it feels like they didn’t have the budget to really make it imaginative or expressive enough. Compare it with Corvus from The Mandalorian, which might be my favourite location from the Star Wars Disney+ shows so far. It’s particularly jarring since we were just at Daiyu, which mostly looks great.

It’s definitely a budget issue. And it makes me wonder how the budgets and Disney subscription buys look as they’re chucking their wad with these TV series. It started out grandiose with Mando but now with this and Bobber Fett - combined with the other upcoming series - it seems like Disney are Roger Corman’ing the same Tatooine sets till the wheels come off. Is it cause the budgets are decreasing? If so, the longer this goes on, the lesser the production values might become. We might even look back at this as still one of the better ones. Who knows.

Again, though, I’ve enjoyed fan films and read SW comics with lesser art - as long as the writing is good, the characters are fun - I’m willing to look passed decreased production values.

If I had to defend Reeva, I’d say she fits the pathologically mediocre and robotic personality type of a bureaucrat/government worker. Especially one you’d expect working for an oppressive regime. Her style of smugness stands out as too modern, though, for the setting that’s based on a 1977 fairytale. And that’s where the problem is. I wish she’d just lean into it - just act, react, make a face, nibble on that scenery at least a little bit, ANYTHING. She could be a cool new villain that you love to hate. But every shot of her is the same expression. I’m just not feeling anything. Bad acting, they say, is the director’s fault, so I’m not sure how much the actress can be blamed. I mean, the prequels - I’ve seen all of those actors do good work in other movies, for example, but they were barely hanging in there under George.

Besides that, I’m embarrassed to admit I fanboy’d out a bit at the Vader scenes in the third episode. So much so I remembered I had an account here and wanted to inform any SW fans I could find about my feels. Yes, the fight looked like an improvised shindig at a cosplay convention and a bed wetting version of Obi Wan is hardly acceptable, and this indeed deflates both the ROTS and ANH duels, but still… they got me. This was the first time in the Disney SW era where I was grinning and not cause of cringe. And if I had to defend the poor quality of the fight - my biggest problem with Disney SW is that, cause of their preference for the OT era, they’re taking old designs, locations, props, puppets that worked with and were complimented by the technology of their time and humiliating them by trying to present them all flashy in the new movies. It just looks off. Morally outdated. So I’m kinda fine with them toning it down a bit for anything that’s closer to OT.

Ultimately, I don’t care if there’s a cheap cricket monster in the background in front of a cardboard wall - the story is what matters and… unfortunately, I’m skipping through most of it. Adventures of little Leia? Yeah, nah. Life’s too short for that. Most of this I’m gliding through and nope’ing out of.

I do sense a neat little fan edit out of all of this, though. Don’t watch Disney SW as part of my SW marathons and still consider most of the legacy storylines as canon (including Dark Forces), but this could result into an explosive 20-30 minutes of pure Obi Wan/Vader stuff. Maybe even jam those Roozh One scenes in there somewhere.

Anyway, whoever is enjoying this - power to you. Don’t wanna parade on your piss. While it’s not for me, I still got a nugget of joy out of this and that’s, frankly, more than I ever hoped for.

I would absolutely purchase a Wampa print and the Rancor.

Hell, I’d commission an Alphabet book, let me know if you are selling these as prints.

Really amazing.

I’ll look around for some printing options and update this thread if I find anything manageable. Really like your alphabet book idea, though. 26 drawings + a cover would make for a fun, weird little comic book.

Alright, last update for November 28th-30th:

X - WING

Y - YODA

Z - ZUCKUSS

Hope you guys had fun. Enjoy December, enjoy TLJ and all the SW craziness that’ll come with it. I’ll get back to client work in the mean time (before I get fired, lol) and figure out a new social media project for next year. I am drawing a graphic novel for a client and a book of my own, so there’s bound to be more art coming from me soon either way. Also wanna mention my YouTube channel again: https://www.youtube.com/user/NoGuidancePictures - have numerous little cartoons in development, hope to finish and upload them soon as well.

Again, thanks everyone! Your responses have been very motivating.

So far the only one I dislike is the Stormtroopers. It’s well made, but it’s a misconception I’ve gotten very tired of.

This may or may not be true, but that trooper is depressed cause - during a practice - even with orders to miss the target entirely, he still came dangerously close. The dude could not help but be precise and, as it happens with perfectionists, the disappointment & peer pressure to get the new orders right began to weigh on him (as implied by the composition). Again, though, this may not be true… I wasn’t there.

Moving on, here’s an update for November 24th-27th:

T - TROIG

U - UNKAR PLUTT

V - VENTRESS

W - WAMPA

If the Unkar Plutt drawing sticks out, it’s cause it was penciled traditionally and due to time restraints - I didn’t get to ink it. Will remain the only physical piece from this project.

Unkar pencils

X-Y-Z still to go!

P.S. I hope this isn’t sacrilege, but I went with a more mainstream/Special Edition-looking Wampa, instead of the original.

I can’t quite put my finger on the crossover with Lando though… And somethin’ tells me I’ll feel silly when it’s pointed out…

DE and Valheru guessed right, it’s a homage to Jim Lee (why I added the “after Jim lee” at the bottom):
Jim Lee Batman/Superman
Lando being the main man of Cloud City, this seemed appropriate.

Anyways, here’s an update for November 18th-November 23rd:

N - NUTE GUNRAY

O - OBI-WAN KENOBI

P - PRINCESS LEIA

Q - QUI-GON JINN

R - RANCOR

S - STORMTROOPERS

How about some of the less well-known, background characters - like the giant grasshopper/praying mantis in the cantina?

I did consider going completely obscure, but it became a little too burdensome cause of a lack of reference. Just did IG-88, for example - relatively known character - used google images and severely inaccurate toys as reference and ended up fudging most of it. Not a very accurate drawing, but here it is:

I - IG-88

Good news, though, is that Star Wars characters are fun to draw and since the brand is becoming so popular - even lesser known characters getting more and more fleshed out - I’m sure I’ll tackle guys like Wioslea at some point in the future.

By the way, the Bossk and IG-88 images are interconnected and in reference to this:

Lethal Weapon

It’s supposed to be Boba Fett in the background. Slight jab at him, I guess, wanted other bounty hunters to get some spotlight for a change.

Great stuff! Have you ever thought of uploading a speedpaint video of some of your Star Wars work to Youtube? I always enjoy watching people draw. 😃

Thank you, guys!

Not sure if this makes sense, but because of his jaw & chin, Tarkin’s face always seems like it’s pointing to a vanishing point underneath him. At least when it’s broken down like a caricature. So it kind of set me up for a top down composition.

SketchMoff

Recording a speed painting video is a great idea, actually. Something to consider. Maybe for the next project, where I’ll begin a new and do everything from scratch (cause, like I mentioned before, these SW drawings have all been sketched out already; inking is all that’s left). Watching me try and get the likenesses down would probably be hilarious… all the erasing and stuff… I do have a Youtube channel, though. Not much on it, but I plan on posting some more stuff soon: https://www.youtube.com/user/NoGuidancePictures/videos

Moving on to letter H:

H - HAN SOLO

No, seriously, these are really, really good. You seem to have a strong angle preference - not that there’s anything wrong with that considering how well you’ve been using it thus far 😃 C3PO is my favorite - wouldn’t mind hanging that piece on my wall.

Is the uniform color palette intentional, or is it a byproduct of how (/how quickly) you’re doing these?

It’d be an honor to have my art on somebody’s wall. I’ll see if there are any print shops near by, when this is done maybe I can ship some out for those who really want one.

Yes, the blue tint is to add some more life to the project and give it a sense of unity. It’s also creeping me out a little how it looks, lol. Other colors didn’t seem to quite fit the Star Wars theme. Red usually fits everything, but when you get into halftones and things like that - it turns pink all over the place and makes the image look like a twisted Valentine’s Day card.

Back to the alphabet, here’s letter E:

E - EV-9D9

E - EV-9D9

do you draw on paper and then scan it, or do you use a stylus / pad etc? just curious what your tools are.

For the most part, all of these are done in Manga Studio (a.k.a. Clip Studio Paint) with a basic Wacom (CTL-470) tablet I’ve owned since 2012. Inktober was, of course, done fully traditionally and I prefer photoshop for freelance illustration work, but Clip Studio Paint is such a lightweight program built specifically for drawing - this project is partly an excuse to get to know it more.

Embedding is a good idea! How do I do it, though? When I paste in the embedded tweet it shows up here as gibberish in the preview.

SilverWook - that would’ve been a better, more deep cuts character to draw. Unfortunately, I’ve already sketched out the entire alphabet, not much room left for alterations. Mostly cause of work and real life responsibilities, time is valuable. But, again, that’s way more original than what I picked. Still, I hope you’ll enjoy the selections I made.

Hey, everyone! Lat month I participated in Inktober (art challenge in which you do an ink drawing every day for the entire month of October) and it got me on the right foot to want to draw more personal projects. One of which was a Star Wars Alphabet (posted Ackbar yesterday; today was Bossk). So from November 5th till November 30th I’ll be doing 26 drawings of Star Wars characters in an alphabetical order.

Now, I will be taking some creative liberties and adding my sense of humor to them, so…don’t expect anything great. Also, I won’t be discriminating against the new films, prequels or EU.

You can find my artwork on Twitter https://twitter.com/HaraldsBaumanis and Instagram https://www.instagram.com/haralds_baumanis/, but I’ll be posting direct links to the drawings here as well, in case you don’t want to follow me.

Thank you to whoever is interested in this and any feedback would be greatly appreciated!

Gotta say, I’m impressed by GoFundMe’s client service. Very efficient, very quick, clear and friendly. I’m now kind of confident in them figuring out weather this was a scam or not.

But, man, the heck did I get myself into here. Finally decide to donate to a campaign and try and do something good and it turns out to be a potential scam, and the person in question turns out isn’t very nice himself (though, I’m not judging anybody here).

Should’ve just minded my own business (unless it’s a legit campaign).

Things like this happen though. I helped someone I knew out through his gofundme campaign a few years ago after he was posting that he was about to be evicted because the unemployment benefits had been cut and were no longer covering all of his rent and he had gone into arrears. Sent him £20. Imagine how pissed i was when i saw a few weeks later that he was posting pictures of his latest haul of vintage star wars figures. Total scam.

That’s insane. How does he live with himself? Every time you look at those toys, you’re reminded you’re a fraud.

Well, good news is - GoFundMe just contacted me again and said they’ll issue a refund within 2-5 business days. But I only really wanna know if it’s a fake campaign. Cause if it’s fake, I’ll contact manlymovie.net as well, so that they’re not accidentally promoting a scam.

Also, Adywan, your link helped me provide them with more information (one that states Sonny was in an accident in 2006; makes all this very suspicious). So thanks for that and I apologize again for bringing this to everyone’s attention in the first place.

Ahw Jeez, guys, come on… Gonna get roasted here on top of everything.

Well, anyways, I contacted GoFundMe, they responded saying that I should straight up scroll down the page and report it, so I did. Then an email came back saying they’ll look into.

Now, knowing my luck, what worries me is that this was in fact a legit campaign and somehow my report will get those people in trouble and their campaign dismantled. Man…
