A couple more differences in part one…

The non title cards (ex. “Examples of Basic Protagonists”), are white in the original and have been changed to yellow.

The comparison photo between “Ewen McDonald” and Obi-wan uses a different picture for Ewen.

The lower res interview videos did stand out a bit, one idea to help minimize this would be to shrink them and enlarge the comparison footage (almost like a picture-in-picture kind of a thing). This would be an alteration from the original, but would allow much fuller use of the frame overall (as in some of the other replaced HD shots, which is definitely an improvement in my opinion).

I just want to say thanks again for doing this. It’s almost as if I’m watching them for the first time again, and I can’t wait to replace my old rips with the restored versions, even if they are slightly different!

I just started watching and the only thing I’ve noticed so far is that the font for the title card recreations doesn’t quite seem to match up (title card number one, the “1”, “E”, “C”, “R”, etc. are different). The original seems to use a smaller kerning as well.

The change from vertical to star wars scrolling is also a little jarring (to me).

It’s hard to get used to watching these in such pristine detail after watching the grainy, washed out versions for so long 😃

I’d be interested in this too. From the comparison shots above, I remember this movie being on the darker side as well.

Unfortunately the ‘white’ LEDs with high CRI ratings fare poorly. Partially because the CRI measurement system is badly flawed, resulting in poor reproduciton in skin-tones specifically. Hopefully the industry will switch to CQS which gives a much more true measure.

I see some manufacturers out there have been supplementing with R9 and R13 values over the last couple of years, but that seems like a patch to me. Since I only buy lamps for household (non-critical use) adding more skin tone colors into the rating system is probably a plus at the increase of more things to compare. CQS rating is not something I have come across until today, but it sounds like a much better system overall. I would also imagine (hope?) that the ratings are generally better for component parts than consumer products.

Yeah, that last scenario has crossed my mind when certain 35mm prints that would be desirable for preservation purposes go through the roof. There can’t be that many collectors with their own 35mm screening room. 😉

When the theaters went digital all those projectors had to go somewhere…

Wow, they are even advertising it as such right on the box. “SD on Blu-ray” is something I’ve never heard of until today.

Not sure how I missed this one, I would like to check this out as well please!

That being said, the HDR demos at CES this year were fairly amazing (as was 8k). And I welcome the advances in compression technology (with reduction in artifacts) as well. I still have a couple of the original recalled Fifth Element BDs sitting around from the early days of Blu-ray.

I was hoping there would be more thong… Seriously though, I didn’t know about this either even all these years later.

I’ll give this a go. I always loved the idea of this story and was disappointed with the execution (and lack of a sequel). Kind of in the same boat as Hancock for me (not the execution part, but the sequel part). I enjoyed Hancock quite a bit. Before the films I hadn’t heard or read any of the original material behind them and found them to be fairly original, with great casts.

Lol, reminds me of Pulp Fiction. I worked at a theater when that was released and saw it probably about as many times! I still love it.

It’s not all about resolution. Increased bit depth, color space, brightness, and compression algorithm efficiency can also improve quality quite a lot. This is true even if you are not sitting at the distance needed to discern 4k from 1080.

I always wonder when we will hit the point of diminishing returns, but saw some impressive demos at CEDIA this year in these areas.

Looks a bit over-sharpened as well to me.

That last shot of the Emperor looks too warm with possibly a yellow/orange cast to it. I’m not on my color managed display, but all the other images looked really nice, except that last one stood out to me.

Looks like there is an Audio Adjust setting for Dolby PL IIx Music (2ch Input) that can control Dimension (moves sound field front to back) and Center Width (center channel weight) which might do something like what you want.

Other than that there doesn’t seem to be any reference to this model supporting PLI which I personally find odd. I haven’t bought a receiver in quite a while, maybe this is the new norm?

I actually want a longer version (as I would imagine most people would that spend the time to track something like this down in the first place). An argument could also be made for a condensed version (almost trailer like) to show before or after a presentation to the uninitiated.
