Emanswfan's Prequel Trilogy (Ep II Opening Clips Now Available)
Time

@Silverkey: I didn't make the opening to mirror ROTJ, though I saw it did in a way in reference to opening the film with good action versus boring exposition and waiting forever for real action. I know ROTS is technically a rescue also, but I don't think it becomes repetitive.

This was another reason to maybe add back some exposition (though different from the original still)

It won't contradict the TPM edit I have.

@EyeShotFirst: I might be able to cut the "good job" line, I just don't feel it makes Obi-Wan out to be an asshole. He acts like a friend to him throughout the rest of the film. It's just one sarcastic joke.

Though it would be interesting, if I could make Obi-Wan feel bad for not being too much of a friend to him after Anakin turns, if I were to keep that aspect.

Okay, so I was editing today then decided I'd start writing the crawl based on the outline I wrote for it a while ago. And while I was reading my outline, I saw that what the crawl mentioned could actually be shown onscreen. so, now I'm working on an alternate opening that replaces my current crawl, with the events described within it. I'm still not sure how it will affect the pacing, so I'll post it soon and let you guys decide.

STAR WARS: EP V "REVISITED EDITION"ADYWAN - 12GB 1080p MP4 VERSION AVAILABLE NOW
Time

We should get back on topic, but I want to say that I love Ady's, Angel's, and Harmy's work. They all bring back the film I loved in different ways. Harmy recreates the great film we saw in the theatres. Adywan creates what the SE should have been, fixing all the issues with the original, be it editing and FX. And Angel, is doing what I've always wanted to see a sort off ultimate special edition, an edition that changes lots (more than really needed) to make the film burst and pop and amaze even in the modern day.

They're all very different, and that's great.

I think the double line is a problem. "Qui-Gon would never join you" to "I will never join you" is not right.

"Qui-Gon would never join you and neither will I"

or

"Qui-Gon would never join you and I won't join you either"

Would be natural ways to express that sentiment, of course Obi-Wan doesn't say that ;-(

The disgusted way Obi-Wan says "Qui-Gon would never join you" implies the second statement anyway.

I don't think anybody would be thinking Obi-Wan would say...

"Qui-Gon would never join you but me I'm flexible"

I never thought about it as the first line implying the second, and I guess it does. I could cut the second line, though I really like how he emphasizes the "Dooku" in "I will never join you, Dooku". And this little emphasis seems more powerful preceded by the "Qui-gon would never join you" line.

I'll be rescoring the films, so the music won't be an issue later on.

From a technical perspective, how does this work with the arena sounds?

Certain parts of the film, are entirely rescored, while some are partially. The arena scene music, is mostly changed just at the beginning of the scene to change it to a different theme. I'll probably have to find some sound I can use to replace missing sound effects. I think the arena battle will be the same music, as there is a massive amount of sfx in there.

I know it will work in the end, I have planned for all the technical work, but it's not what I'm focused on at the moment.

If ever there was a time to say 'it's so crazy, it just might work'...

Anyway, I realize it's a rough cut, but I thought I'd point these things out anyway:

- Obi Wan says "Qui-Gon would never join you," then "I will never join you." Doesn't really work.

- The music for the beginning of the arena scene needs to change, Across the Stars doesn't make sense at this point.

But you probably already know these things, so I'll just say good luck! Can't wait to find out how this will work!

I'll be rescoring the films, so the music won't be an issue later on.

I'm still working on the Obi-Wan/Dooku confrontation beacuse several shots are not long enough. But in terms of dialogue, I think going from "Qui-Gon would never join you" to "I will never join you" does work, it's just the rough editing right now.

The reason that confrontation is so short is because it refers to plot elements that wouldn't make any sense at that point. Plus, the other dialogue isn't that great anyhow.

Here you go, the first 4 minutes of the Episode II.

https://vimeo.com/72493739

Vimeo Description:

This is a very rough cut of the first few minutes of my Episode II edit. It has some technical issues still and is missing a scene yet to be inserted.

It does have the filmic adjustments, but no color correction, grain, or slight technicolor emulation has been added.

Changes:
-supports new plot of the film
-Anakin and Padme have been friends for a while. They know each other well, and have worked together before. This supports a natural progression towards their love.
-Dooku has captured Obi-Wan at the beginning, establishing him as the "bad guy" from the start. This edit will even show Dooku more consistently throughout the film.
-Starting here, the film begins much more exciting and in a very similar way to ROTJ.
- references to plot elements that have been completely changed in the edit have been eliminated.

'It's A Wonderful' is done very well on the Blu-Ray but still not a patch on the original.

The 2007 colorization still looks pretty bad. The only colorization that looked good to me was the I Love Lucy Scottland episode colorization. If you look at the real life color stills and then at the colorized episode, they look identical. They're even planning to release a colorized version of the whole series for the bluray version. But know matter how good it would look, I wouldn't bare to watch it a different way than how I watched it as a kid.

So even if it does look good, I still think it ruins a film.

So Angel has the brilliant idea of being completely silent about his edit, till randomly one day, he releases the finished thing, hence not building up hype and saving people the "waiting" feeling.

That's why he hasn't been on here for a while...

Grain removal is the new colourization.

Pretty much. And if you look at lots of Disney releases, you'll see DNR is their best friend. The only thing that scares me if they re-released Star Wars, but I wouldn't think they'd do that. Though, anyone who has a bluray of any of the Disney classic animated films, knows that many of the films are completely destroyed. Cinderalla on VHS has literally more detail than it's newer Bluray counterpart. There's something wrong if a VHS looks better than a bluray.

Not all Disney classics are affected by it, but certainly far too many are.

Emanswfan's Prequel Trilogy (Ep II Opening Clips Now Available)
Time

After having planned enough, I've started to do rough cuts of each of the films to put my new concepts into work. Slowly, these films are becoming very different from both the originals and previous fanedits.

I hope to show the first several minutes of ATOC (but not w/ the new color correction) very soon. I know, I've promised clips before, and haven't done them, but this time you'll see them. Have to say, that I'm starting to much prefer the new opening compared to the boringness we get in the original film, Episode II never started the way a good Star Wars film should.

BTW, I should mention all the clips up on my Vimeo and in the first post aren't remotely an indication of these edits. They, were more so concepts I had and for the most part abandoned for more radical approaches.

Glad to hear it, man. It'll be a way off yet, but I think the end result will be superb, given that Kerr is at the helm.

And hey, LOTR can use more editors; you might even have some brilliant ideas yourself.

Well, I do know I'd love to maybe help with the one film edit of The Hobbit, as that's one thing I so badly want to see come to be a reality. Of course, that's years away, but atleas I'll be done with my SW edits by that time hopefully.

The only thing I'm concern about color wise is Geonosis. It's so memorably red that I feel like thr more brown color would be jarring. It might work better in context, but I'm a bit worried. All the other color stuff I could be shown and probably not immediately notice the color differences.

If people would prefer a not radically recolored Geonosis, I can do so. And honestly, I might not do too much radical color changes, mostly because it can end up looking too unnatural and processed. This is the reason, that the yellow tint is still existent in the opening battle clip because when you desaturate the ships (or anything gray affected by the yellow tint), you create this artificial look. I've noticed it in when faneditors have shown images and clips of that scene without the tint. The same effect is even in Star Wars Revisited, though I don't see it in ESB:R.

With the DTS audio available for these theatrical releases it could prove to be quite a nice set of creations for the fans.

Yes, these will be released with 6.1 DTS-MA tracks like the blurays. I may age the audio a bit. I'll probably add some warping, old tube compression, slight clipping from time to time, and some EQ to make the audio match the theatrical sound of ANH. I'll also try to make the audio sound more on-set, as too many times voices sound dubbed.

Interesting concept for a project. I often thought the prequels lacked some visual character, probably due to II / III using the digital cams.

One thing, and it's just my 2 cents. I don't really know about messing with the audio to the extreme you're thinking.

Not sure I'm down with purposely making all of those changes. Perhaps the thought is less extreme that what you'll end up doing, but I just wanted to add my 2 cents here as "not hugely into all of those ideas on the audio"

One problem I have with many modern movies is the over use of the available dynamic range - dialog being barely audible, other effects nearly blowing your ears out. Not that it's really even a major issue with the prequels, but perhaps a small amount of dynamic range reduction in the form of light compression, topped with a light bit of EQ work wouldn't hurt.. certainly a lot of things to consider, but I'd rather not hear warping, lol ;) ... also, "old tube compression" can be interesting, who knows. I guess it's the "warping" bit that caught my attention, haha.
Carry on. Can't wait to see the results!

edit: and yes, some of the color changes are nice :) Hopefully the final bit seems more like a FILM than a cold digital capture. Interesting stuff, and I do dig the idea.

Of course, anyone who downloads it has the choice to use the filtered audio if wanted or not. My description probably doesn't sound really accurate to what I mean. The point would be to make the sound sound like the original ANH theatrical release (except still keeping the 5.1 of course).

Two more screenshots here:

I'm certainly still tweaking this one, I'm not nearly satisfied with it yet. But this is what I'm trying to get at if I want an older looking 35mm feel (something similar to technicolor):

Angel who I think disappeared used to post some screenshots on here that would make your jaw drop, but he'd never tell anybody how he got the results.

I've seen all of his stuff, and it's amazing what he had been able to do. Some of what I've been doing has been inspired by his work, and I've figured out how to do some of the things he did but not all. Some are just mind blowing, but honestly I'm not sure Angel could have done that stuff in motion as easily.
