To add to this frustration, I don’t think the IMAX version I saw when TFA was in theatres even properly showed the IMAX scenes. The film was presented at my IMAX theatre in 2.39:1 throughout the entire film with no changes to widen the frame during the IMAX portions.
That’s not rare. I believe there were less than 20 theatres that showed it the way it was supposed to be seen, which was on proper IMAX film with the matte opened up during the Falcon chase.
I was at an IMAX on an opening night (front row, so it was terrible) and it was the same aspect ratio through the whole thing.

I’m curious to know, how are people finding the commentaries? Have any fav’s so far? I’ve enjoyed listening through the comedy ones, esp the Super Ego commentary for ESB, and can also recommend The Canon for SW, and Half in the Bag for ROTJ.
I am so excited to get these discs just for these commentaries. I’ve seen these movies a billion times, but I want to listen to these commentaries without having to do the gymnastics of syncing.

I use imgburn. Yes there is malware bundled with it but if you select the right options during install you can have it without.

Wow. I’ve used ImgBurn for years, but had no idea about this. Are there any alternatives to using this? Preferably Mac based, but I could use Wine to open some Windows applications.

That scene is just fine as well. No graphics overlaid upon it, so it's a clean shot.

There might be others that I didn't notice, but I only noticed that in the "Commentary" video (which does have the IMAX footage in 16:9).
Don't need to do anything. There aren't any onscreen graphics to edit out, so we just plug it in. We'll just take that shot from the commentary and plug it in.

If it's a cable broadcast, yes. That would help tremendously and let me be able to finish the preservation...well, really quickly.
Negative. Until we can get our hands on an EPIX HD screencap or some other television preservation, no movement.
The rest of the movie does NOT exist in 16:9. Rather, portions of the film were shot 2.35:1, while others shot in native IMAX.
Star Trek Into Darkness was shot in native IMAX. It was theatrically exhibited in IMAX. However, when the home video came out, everything was botched.
The IMAX footage has been located, but they are in a variety of different sources, including:
-Enhanced Commentary
-Bonus Features
-EPIX VOD
This is a thread documenting our attempts to preserve the IMAX version. I personally have a version together, but I still need a capture of the EPIX VOD in order to complete it. There are many missing frames that just don’t meet my anal-retentive nature.

You could probably piece together a good portion of the IMAX scenes in 1.78 from the clips that are shown in the special features(which are surprisingly long). They have a nice bitrate, too. It would require some editing though, since the center of the frame is sometimes obscured by text. Overlaying the 2.35 Blu-ray image over it should be enough to cover it up. Anything not shown in there could be patched up with the iTunes and HDTV sources. Just an idea.
I've already done that. I've pilfered through all the special features to get everything I can. We just need a good capture of the EPIX broadcast and we'll have a quality version.
Alright, well, I took a look at the capture and there was a LOT of bad artifacting. Is there anyway we can get someone else to capture the footage from Epix VOD? I have no capability, but I will edit it.

I made a 14GB MKV (1080i/ac3) of the capture.I wonder how well just using that capture to fill in the rest of the frame for the IMAX shots would work, or using it to fill in the aforementioned missing frames/sections of the screen that have BTS stuff in the commentary.
I'm going to be working on that tonight for sure. It's going to help so much. Even if it's a poor bitrate, we only need a tiny amount of image to cover up the BTS stuff, so hopefully it would all balance out.
All this work for a terrible movie. I love it.
If it's 16:9 the whole way, it might have just been cropped from the 2.35:1. Either way, can you do a capture?
I've got the whole film cut together using the Enhanced Commentary. There are lots of parts that can't be fixed due to either a BTS shot plastered on the frame or actual missing frames.
It would just be a matter of plugging the appropriate scenes in and seeing if they match. It would be pretty simple.
