On Her Majesty's Secret Service (1999 dvd without the opening sequence blue tinted, good transfer but print is somewhat scratched and damaged)

Not to be too much off topic, but that release is accidentally cut by a few lines.

In the Region 1 NTSC dvd?

Anyways, I looked up the specs of the dvd's I had my friend rip. I don't know much about the file format or how they can be opened so you guys will have to tell me if they would be of any help.

They are ISO image files, which apparently opens with roxio creator

My Neighbor Totoro- Fox dvd 4:3 P&S Macek dub
TOTORO.iso 3.42 GB

Aristocats- Gold Collection 4:3
ARISCATS.iso 4.27 GB

Jungle Book- Limited Edition 4:3
JUNGLE.iso 4.29 GB

On Her Majesty's Secret Service- special edition
ONHERMAJ.iso 4.28 GB

I suspect the ripping program he used automatically shrank the file size to be under 4.3 GB so that it could be easily burned to a single layer dvd. I think all of them were dual layer encoded discs.

Totoro (the R1 FOX/Lorber DVD Edition with Macek dub, cropped to 4:3) was natively a DVD5. It is not compressed, but quite a bad DVD. The R2J also features this same dub, fwiw.

Aristocats and Jungle Book are definitely compressed from DVD9, likely using DVDShrink :/

regarding ISO, you can either install a tool like Virtual Clone Drive (free through AnyDVD) and use it to mount DVD ISOs to make virtual DVD drives on your PC, then play in any software DVD player, or you can burn them using ImgBurn or Nero. You can also see the files inside the ISO using a tool like 7zip or winrar.

someone should post the edit differences at http://www.movie-censorship.com/

probably the people that figured it out.

either way, I think that is another useful site fan (re)editors and video enthusiasts that should have these edits listed by times.

since I don't have the Blu-ray, I know I should not make the comparison.

just my 2 pennies.

look forward to a BD50 fan re-edit.

btw, anyone else wanting to work with the Streamline dub mp3, you'll find that you need to splice the audio at the place where the tape had a stretch in it and some squaking feedback. Otherwise it loses sync. It is at the farewell party for Kiki, as she is about to leave home, the local girls are expressing their jealousy. split it there and remove some delay (and fade out the feedback).
best bet is to sync the beginning part to video, then sync the remainder after the stretch in the tape, figure out the ms diff between the 2 syncs, and splice and remove that amount in delay at the split.
also some noise reduction can be helpful, since the noise floor really goes up at around 1hr14.5 min, and you can also hear in some quiet section background chatter from previous VHS recordings below Kiki from somewhere in the vhs generation chain. I widened the stereo imaging a bit, too.

I don't know about Godzilla dubs, but iirc, they (Toho) were responsible for that awful Macross Do You Remember Love dub (no, not Clash of the Bionoids hacked version, also by Toho, but the whole film has a dub, last available on LD, from my understanding, other than fan discs which added it to the DVDs and BDs); the awful dub which featured Hong Kong natives as part of an English as a second language learning practice mixed with some Aussies for good measure. Only for watching out of curiosity, imo. Or to get drunk to, and similar fun.

that said, I kind of like the JAL/Toho Mamo dub. I only wish that there were better versions available. The only full length versions are fan capped VHS tapes from decades ago, many Nth generation. The dub was released on Italian DVDs, but an edited version missing about (iirc) 30 minutes. I have the ITA disc and the edits are pretty bad and make the movie kind of a disaster. Now I have been reminded that the Discotek version of the JAL dub is coming from a fan who is sourcing the base from the ITA DVD, and the remaining ~30 minutes from the best-known fan preservation.

If I ever can get some HDD space (or better yet, a new HDD) I will be adding these old dubs from many of these to BDs and DVDs. I have access to using Scenarist SD and Scenarist BD, so they will certainly be compliant-spec discs. The HDD space is a killer, tho :/

Cagliostro BD with both Eng dubs/subs (maybe other dubs, subs), and Mamo BD (all 4 English, maybe other dubs +subs, depending on bitrate) are definitely among those custom projects on my backburner (waiting for a HDD), along with Totoro. Kiki I do not yet have the BD... and the splicing/timestretching/pitch correction needed for the only cap we have for the Streamline dub is daunting (though I think timetrtching will fix many timing issues).

Right now I am working on an easier sub/dub BD project, since I already have the subs timed for 23.976, dub is synced for the R2J custom I did (R2J has same master as BD, and I rechecked in Vegas and the sync is perfect). I just have to re-style subs and do more fancy effects for the BD, and then render them. But this is hardly some older VHS/LD dub, so kind of more OT than I need to get in to here.

I have a really terrible mp3 copy of the JAL Mamo dub, and some improperly-made mkv with all 4 dubs, but half of them don't work w/o transcoding through eac3to. Both copies of the JAL dub I have are multi-generation and show signs of VHS speed fluctuation and lots of noise, etc.

Tbh, I am waiting on DiskoTek to release their DVD, and just use their copy of the JAL dub (it will have all 4 dubs) to add to the BD. I already have the other 3 dubs on retail DVDs, but I want to see how they retimed and cleaned up the JAL dub. Not knocking them, but I imagine that it will still require some more cutting in snips and syncing, judging by some of their sloppy dub syncing in the past. Still they have better audio software to cleanup the sound (as long as they don't go overboard and remove Vital parts in the audio like Criterion does in some of their audio "clean-up" -- see their DVD of the Red Balloon for example, having removed the air escaping from the Balloon, for example). I have enough on my plate to keep me busy w/o mucking around in the JAL Mamo dub till DT release their DVD.

If anyone wants the JAL dub, all the same, before DT release their DVD, iirc, I got the 4th generation+ mp3 VHS cap at lupinencyclopedia.com
yeah here we go:
http://lupinencyclopedia.com/anime/film/secret_of_mamo
look for the blue url link that says "mp3 version."

the one in the mkv that has all 4 dubs is improperly made. It requires reencoding the JAL and Streamline dubs, and resampling to 48k for DVD, since they are 44.1 even though encoded to AC3. They have bad header data or smth, so that basically they can't be played like they are. If anyone wants that conversion I made of the JAL dub, I can post it, but I think it is even more generations of lossy transcodes and VHS copy generations than the low-fi mp3 above.

thanks a ton for sharing!

mp3 cap of 20 year old LD 2 VHS cap is still better than what most of us beggars have had till now: nothing, nada, nil. Hard to say if a better cap will even surface, as some people I know have been looking for this for years more than my few years at it. I won't go holding my breath for a better cap, I can say that.

why not set up a free account with www.box.net? unlike free accounts with most other file lockers/cloud storage, the files won't be deleted unless you do it (or unless it gets taken down for other reasons).
another option would be dropbox, but that requires installing software, and other stuff, so may not be the best all around option.
I upload things to many file lockers, but the only sites that won't delete files after some short period is one of these 2 options, atleast what I have used (all free accounts).

as for Laputa.... iirc the old dub is still around to some degree. I think it's the R2J DVD that has the old Streamline dub on it. There may (?) also be a UK disc with it, but perhaps I am mixing that up with smth else that has a few releases in the UK (like Cagliostro).

best version is subjective

BD is HD o/c. but has edits to video and audio.

the 3xDVD R2J set has the Theatrical Cut and the cut with Flashback 2012 mixed into the film, plus an extras disc. The cut with Flashback cut in is also HD remastered, just a different master than the BD, and also the retail is o/c SD, also the Theatrical Cut is not remastered, probably the same as earlier DVD releases (?). it is also probably now OoP. Theatrical Cut is non-remastered but has LPCM audio. HD remastered Flashback longer cut is DD audio (don't know bitrate offhand).

It is partly b/c different masters in video which will make upscaling the edited frames from DVD to BD fanedit more difficult. and restoring audio edits won't be easy especially for anyone wanting to unedit the 5.1 track on the BD

usenet works for me. i use free servers, but it gets the job done for downloads (unfortunately I can't upload this way).

torrent sites also work, but o/c so many lately now have no fan-cut (or even no custom subbed) discs, and not everybody can access all torrent sites, not even the greatest tracker collectors (you can go for making a .torrent file with a bunch of public trackers in tracker list, and use DHT, etc, but just not list the torrent at any public tracker site. you just hand out the .torrent file to a few people, post it at a filesharing site that doesn't bar countries, etc, or host .torrent at a bunch of file lockers to give some choice and in case links die).

If you want to go for private tracker, I think Bit-HDTV allows custom and fan-made discs. BitHQ no longer allows fanedits (they do allow fansubbed dscs). Cinematik would probably allow it, but may want to get mod approval. But tik doesn't allow anon uploads, whereas BitHDTV does (for higher userclasses). Maybe also HDSpace would work. Maybe HD-Torrents. Maybe CHDBits. Maybe HDRoad. passthepopcorn may allow it (I would get approval first), and some user classes appear to be allowed to upload anon. Either way, wherever you upload it, perhaps you can allow people to port it to a few other sites, to give people a shot at different sites.

I would like to see a custom US-cut Blu-Ray Disc.

If someone wants to use the European BD I have as base for a custom BD, that would be great.

it is the Director's Cut (Version Longue)

It is also only French-dubbed, unfortunately. This is the part that really irked me. 2 different French 5.1 audio tracks.

Were I to do this, I would use the best English audio source, and cut up the h264 AVC to match the US cut.

Problem is I don't own a copy of the US cut, nor English (original) audio in any format, so I never bothered trying this myself, but believe me, I have wanted access to a copy with the proper audio. I hate live action movies with dubs

*If* there are scenes in the US version not on the DC, I suppose they could be taken from the Netflix stream or the best available source, upscaled, color corrected, and grain added/matched to BD. I have no clue as I have, unfortunately never seen the US version. Sadly I was stupid and got this thinking that the original language would be French since Besson is French. My faux pas. live and learn.

EDIT:

I see someone already did this.

anyone want to point me in the correct direction, preferably to the 2xBD25s (not an mkv) by DisgruntledFan? Myspleen wouldn't have been a good place for me to locate, anyhow, since I was never a member there (but it seems more sites are restricting fanedits, which I assume was the reason it was taken down there).

thanks for any help

Macross: Do You Remember Love? (Released)

fwiw. i just had my memory jogged that Disc 2, the Theatrical Cut, from the 3 Disc Special Edition, does indeed have LPCM audio. Disc 1, the HD remastered version (w/ 2012 mixed in) has only DD.

not sure why they gave the remastered version DD except that the video encode probably didn't leave enough of the 10 Mb bitrate max allowed on a DVD to also have PCM, so the audio needed compressed. I haven't really tested it, but this seems like a likely reason. (I have had R2J DVDs that wouldn't mux with just adding subs due to bitrate spikes that were too high, so i had to use lower quality subs or transcode audio just to subtitle the disc -- some of these retail discs are already over spec in the retail version).

So disc 2 can be used for lossless audio for removed BGM (tho lower fidelity and sampling rate, so it needs resampled), but I still have no idea what the hell to do for a 5.1 mix other than skip it. (a mushfake 5.1 upmix with plogue bidule likely wouldn't cut it to match sonically at all).

regardless, if someone else undertakes this, I wish them good luck and I hope to find a copy of their work to watch.

it sucks what they did

mentioned above is the fact that there is also more than the issue of video footage that has been changed (censored). also problematic is the fact that some music (BGM) has been removed. you *could* try to mix the audio section in from the DVD (or LD), but I have a feeling it will be fairly jarring quality coming from a DD source and mixing to a BD LPCM (if using the remastered DVDs, you need to unpack the DD track and then resample it first, then mix and effect it so the splices aren't totally obvious). That kind of covers the 2.0 track. Good luck doing a fan upmix to match the 5.1 mix on the BD (I would probably NOT try to even fix the BGM on that). I don't own any of the LDs, so I don't know their quality, but can anyone say if the audio is PCM? If so, this would obviously be a better source than the DVDs (unless there was an issue with the track I am unaware of).

the video o/c needs the scenes upscaled w/ lancoz or w/e from the DVD (or LD), cropped to match, photoshopped and color (incl bit depth broadened), and I actually think the BD will show more grain, not less (I would hope, I like grain), but either way, the texture needs to match... so the grain may have to be removed/smoothed from upscaled shots, then noise (fake grain) added to replicate the BDs grain texture.

there is also a new opening text screen, not on previous versions.

take in to consideration I did not buy this b/c the Lucasfied gaffs, so this is all based on other forum discussions and screen shots, but it seems pretty accurate what has been removed and added. I have thought about it and whether I want to bother, or if i will stick to my remasterd DVD with added fansubs to disc 1 (haven't found fansubs to use for Discs 2 and 3). It seems like more than I want to bother with, tbh, especially given my kids don't like me to have hobbies and time to my self :P

As an update, I've been searching for this audio all over the internet and have had no luck. Most of the time this dub's been mentioned on anime fan sites, people have been asking for copies of it. Anyone have the rare LD that's able to cap the audio? Thanks.

I have also traipsed all over looking. It seems sad it has never been capped properly for preservation's sake. Especially for those of us who really dislike some of the casting in the Disney dub (to the point I hate playing it for my kids, but feel guilty watching it in Japanese while they are asleep).

The closest I have come are small snippet sample clips on some dub-information site, iirc.

I wish I could offer to help this project out more personally, but unfortunately I have no LD player (let alone a good one), no way to cap LDs, and I don't own the Ghibli ga Ippai LD set. I can only offer to help sync the dub to R1/R2J/R2UK videos (these are the DVDs I own), and BD whenever it releases, since I have experience here..
