Here is my feedback for Maximum Overdrive:

What I liked:

- The menu. It looks very professional. Simple and functional, exactly how I like it.

- Picture and sound quality are very good for a movie like this. The colors seem accurate too.

- The bonus section, especially the AC/DC interview and the magazine scans.

What could have been better (in my eyes):

- You can't change the audio while the movie is playing.

- I would have liked a little bit of information about the 4 audio tracks. What are their sources and in what way are they different?

- Maybe subtitles would have been nice. I personally don't need them, but I'm certain they would be useful for some people.

Nonetheless, this is a great release. I'm glad I can add this to my Blu-ray collection. Thanks again to you and the rest of the team for the effort, it's greatly appreciated.

Logically if you time stretch a piece of sound that has distinct effects in it, those effects won't be at their original timecode, so won't be in sync anymore. Stretching make no sense in this case, as the same time you solve a problem, you create another one. In a different case, when the piece you want to time stretch is only an indistinct hum with no recognizable sounds, you could say the stretching won't be noticable. But if the piece is so monotonous why would you need stretching? You could just copy-paste instead....

Thanks for taking the time to explain that in detail.

I don't think the speed is the issue here. My guess is framecuts. I didn't really invest much time yet, but I will have more time next weekend, if there is still something wrong. I'm normally a perfectionist, but my time was limited and it also was the first time I did this (syncing LD audio to Blu-ray video).

About time stretching: Can you elaborate on the downsides to that? Especially when its just used filling a 20 ms gap.

I was also thinking about the analog capture ilovewaterslides made. I have absolutely no experiences with Laserdiscs. If a Laserdisc features an analog and digital audio track, are they always from the same master? Could it be that the analog track is superior to the digital one, because less compression was applied (similar to vinyl captures that offer a higher dynamic range than Audio-CDs)?

Well, a lot of editing needed to be done. I had both, the original and the Laserdisc audio, open in Audition and they weren't in sync every 2-3 mins, sometimes even after a couple of seconds. The files are still not 100% in sync now, but I had it zoomed in to the max and these differences were just a couple of ms... After a while I said to myself: F... it! Not only because A LOT of editing had to be done for a 100% perfect sync, but also because I came to the conclusion that it wouldn't be visible. Maybe I'm wrong...

I tested it (didn't watch the whole movie again though) and to me it seems ok. I can't speak for the whole movie, but the scenes I saw were ok to my eyes and ears. I made 44 cuts (even time stretching once, but it was just a couple of ms. I didn't hear a difference), so it wasn't like I just left it alone most of the time.

I converted it to flac and dtshd and uploaded it to a file host. Everyone is invited to PM me for links. :)

If there are some flaws, please let me know. As I said: I didn't watch the whole movie again yet. I'm also far from an expert in audio editing...

PDB was so kind to send me the unsynced (bitperfect) Laserdisc audio. I converted the sampling frequency to 48 Khz with iZotope RX3 and cut the file with Audacity. It is in sync with the DCP Blu-ray now. I will upload it later today.

Btw, if anyone wants to sync any other audio tracks from the official Blu-ray release, just add a delay of -2343 ms to the audio track in tsMuxer. It will be in sync with the DCP version then.

Hi there!

I got it from file hosts. There are ways to get it quite fast this way.

If anyone needs help, just PM me. I can also upload parts to other hosts, my upload speed is pretty bad though.

By the way: I am searching for the lossless PCM audio track from the BTTF Laserdisc. I would like to sync it to the DCP Blu-ray. Can someone here please help me out?

By the way, has anyone actually tried making and exporting the menu in multiAVCHD? Because here it says this:

Menu support:

Maximum number of titles: 252
Maximum number of hidden titles: 251
Maximum number of subtitles per title: 32
Maximum number of chapters per title: 96
>> Maximum number of audio tracks per title: 32
Welcome screen / Intro title: 1

When you preview the menu in multiAVCHD, it shows only six tracks in that small box but that is only static preview with no actual functions, so I thought maybe, when you create the menu, it might actually scroll down to the others but I have yet to figure out a way to test this without actually creating and burning the whole disc.

That's what I thought as well. Wasted a disc. You can only choose between the first 6 audio tracks in the menu. If you want to listen to any other audio tracks, you have to switch with the AUDIO button of your remote while the movie is playing.

@DragoonClawNZ

No limitations as far as I can see. I have tested the created Blu-ray structure with PowerDVD and everything seems fine.

@Laserschwert

I know about the safe areas, but didn't care, since I turned off the overscan on my LG TV. You are 100% right though, so I changed the design a bit in my final encode. A good idea anyways, since I am planning to burn it to Blu-ray for a couple of people...

@waspattck

I haven't tried it so far, since my version only has 15 audio tracks, but I'll test it as soon as I can. That would be a bummer...

FWIW, you probably shouldn't have to specify "German Forced" as an option here.  If you choose German audio, the menu logic should auto-enable the German Forced subs--and the same thing for any audio language with corresponding forced subs.  However, that does mean that any forced subs should be automatically disabled when you choose an audio track with a different language, and that logic might be more cumbersome. No idea, I don't do menus ;)

Thanks for the info. You're right of course. Will change that and encode it again.

By the way, I got a reply from the company with the key and license file 5 days after sending the request. So anyone who asks for it: Be patient.

In addition: If anyone needs help with the program, just message me. It's quite simple though, compared to Scenarist.

That looks great and the 30 days trial should be more than enough. My question is though, can you make menus with moving backgrounds in it?

If you mean videos, yes. All backgrounds in my menus are videos of still images with background music. I just added the buttons in the program.

You have to demux the videos to .264 and .ac3 files though. The program doesn't accept mkv or m2ts files.

I finally found a nice authoring tool, that is capable of handling all the audio tracks with proper menus. It's called Blu-Disc Studio MX. You can request the key to a full working 30 days trial version on their website.

Here are the menus I made:

They aren't animated but all have seamless background audio/video and with the popup menu (last picture) you are able to switch between the audio & subtitle tracks while the movie is playing.

I can really recommend the program, the full version costs 500 USD though...

I was going to try this for kicks, just to see if it'd work, but get a "matroska parse error: invalid h264 NAL unit size. NAL unit truncated" error :(

Just open the mkv with mkvmerge GUI or MKVExtractGUI2 (both part of the free MKVToolnix package) and mux it again. Then try again with tsmuxer. Worked for me. :)

Edit: Harmy beat me to it.

I tried making a simple menu with multiAVCHD 4.1 and it's actually quite easy and you get decent results.

I ran into one problem though: Although you can add lots of audio and subtitle tracks to your project, the setup menu of the created Blu-ray only shows up to 6 audio tracks and 5 subtitle tracks. There doesn't seem to be a possibility to extend that menu to more than one page, like the chapter menu.

@Harmy: You said you would use multiAVCHD for the menu of the first disc too. Are you aware of this problem and is there a workaround? If there isn't a workaround, I'm afraid multiAVCHD is pretty useless for those who want to create a Blu-ray with more than just 6 audio tracks. You can still switch between the different tracks with the audio button of your remote while playing the movie of course, but the reason why I want a menu is having the different audio tracks properly labeled in the setup menu.

I really hope I'm just too stupid...

Just downloaded and tested 2.5. Fantastic work, Harmy! A big thanks to you and everyone else involved. I'm pretty sure this will be everyone's to-go version for a long time. Watching 2.1 a couple of months ago already was an incredible experience, it's great to have the final version now.

I don't wanna sound greedy, but is there a possibility to make the lossless audio of the isolated score and 1985/1993 laserdisc mixes available somewhere, so those who are interested could mux them in (only if the sources aren't lossy anyways of course) ?

Thanks a ton again, I really appreciate all the time and effort you put into this!

Blu-Ray and other HD box size STAR WARS covers
Time

For everyone, who doesn't know how to handle psd files:

I resized EyeShotFirst's image to the dimensions that are given in his template file and edited it slightly in photoshop. It is not possible to maintain the original aspect ratio though, since the dimensions wouldn't be correct then. All that is needed now, is printing it out in it's original size (from image dpi). I hope it's correct this way, I had no chance to test it yet.

I made two versions (both high quality jpgs): One with the AVCHD logo and one with the Blu-ray logo.

I mainly made those for myself, but thought, what's the harm in sharing them here. ;) All credit goes to EyeShotFirst. Can't thank you enough!
