Spence's Obi-Wan Kenobi (V3 Released)
Time

OT member Phase3 had a wonderful suggestion for altering the final duel in the Kenobi series so that we don’t end on Obi-Wan’s baffling choice to let Vader live. The basic idea is to move the burying obi-wan in rocks to the very end of the duel so that after Kenobi walks away from Vader with a sliced helmet, he screams out “Obi-Wan” then cracks the ground with the force, proceeding to bury Obi-Wan, walk away from the fight the victor. Then Obi-Wan climbs out and the fight is over.

If we can make this work, I think it would make the duel even more amazing than it already is (I quite enjoyed the fight outside of the nonsensical ending where Obi-Wan lets Vader live).

I created a mock-up of this idea. The changes so far:

-Reversing the flow of Kenobi retreating so it links smoothly to the later part of the duel.
-Flip shot of ground breaking for visual continuity.
-Removed Vader’s line “And that is why you will always lose” as he breaks the ground, rough sfx replaced (can be polished later)
-Cropped out vader of wide shot of ground breaking for visual continuity.
-Removed vader’s line “Did you really think you could defeat me?” after he buries him.
-Rearranged shots of Vader walking away for better flow

The one key change remaining to tie this whole idea together is somehow changing the final shots of the rock burying so that Vader’s helmet is still sliced in half. I don’t know who would have the special effects skills to do this but perhaps a community effort would achieve this.

Return of the Jedi Renewed (released)

I really don’t see how it improves the pacing. If anything I’d say it has a negative effect on it. You spend way too much time away from the main villains to the point where you start to wonder what’s going on with them. The way it is in the final movie is perfect. You’re shown what the villains are doing, and then after the first sequence with the heroes we are updated with the status of the villains.

Plus the Vader scene is great and helps give build up to the Emperor’s arrival.

Agreed. I love many of the ideas for this edit but I kept in the Vader arrival scene for this reason in my own edit of Rotj. I also kinda always loved since I was a kid how Vader’s arrival tends to hype up the importance of the Emperor arriving.

End of Anakin vs Obi Wan (ROTS), Re-edited

I honestly like L8wtr’s version a little bit more. Your version feels “off-beat” if that makes sense. Like the timing between Obi-Wan and Anakin jumping is off.

Interesting, thank you for the feedback. Oddly enough that is precisely my issue with L8wtr’s version. We cut immeditaely from a shot of Anakin swiping beneath Obi wan’s feet as he leaps up directly to the next shot of Anakin jumping up, without any time between showing Obi-wan complete the jump so that Anakin’s stance can change for the shot of him jumping.

End of Anakin vs Obi Wan (ROTS), Re-edited
Time

I’ve seen the end of the fight between Anakin vs Obi-Wan on Mustafar handled different ways in fanedits but my favorite solution of them all has been the way L8wtr handled it in his edit “Dawn of the Empire”.

He eliminates all the “high ground” and “you underestimate my powers” dialogue so that it’s a quick cut with Anakin immediately jumping after Obi Wan does.

Conceptually I LOVE this idea but have always found L8wtr’s execution here lacking. So I tried editing this scene myself with just a tad bit more of time between Obi wan and Anakin’s jump. I showed it to a friend unfamiliar with fanedits and he loved the change. I feel like this achieves what L8wtr was going for in this scene with a little more smoothness.

Let me know what ya’ll think!

Idea: How to make Episode 3 work as a standalone prequel?
Time

I am interested in what you all think about turning episode 3 into a standalone prequel film.

I have always considered it the best entry in the prequel trilogy, mainly due to it’s compelling story. It would be great to view it in a marathon as the only prequel but this would require a new crawl and maybe some other changes in the story.

What would have to be included in the new crawl, among other cuts/additions to make it work as a standalone prequel film?

I think some of the biggest challenges are establishing the array of villains in the movie and Anakin/Obi Wan’s history. And the past can be altered since episode 3 would stand alone. The crawl could even specify that Anakin was found by the Jedi as a teenager rather than as a kid, as well as specifying that it was Obi Wan alone who sought out Anakin.

The movie is about a man who emotionally abuses his students into becoming good musicians. It works, of course, and everyone, including that monster, gets a happy ending. It’s the most viscerally unpleasant film I’ve ever sat through, and I only stuck with it just hoping it was leading to a grand, cathartic ending in which, idk, the teacher would get a drumstick shoved all the way up his fucking nose, but no. The kid does good on the drum at a show and everyone’s okay in te end.

Fuck.

That.

Let’s just say I had a very different interpretation of the film.

+1000000

+100000000 J.K. Simmons’ screaming at me.

It’d be nice if I could still say any SW film was a favourite of mine. Unfortunately, that time has passed.

Same.

Buttttt, I do think that the original Star Wars and Empire Strikes Back will forever be in my top 10 favorites. They are still fantastic movies in their own right that changed cinema forever. They just don’t quite make it as my number one favorites. Still up there.

The 50th anniversary white album release is very exciting!

I am most excited for the Esher demoes which is basically the unofficial “Beatles - Unplugged”. The remix for Back in the USSR that was released sounded nice and punchy.

The White album is chronologically the first Beatles release that I prefer in stereo. The 2014 mono vinyl releases of the Beatles catalogue are basically the holy grail of my music collection.
