Ady, just wanted to let you know that your work continues to enthrall Star Wars fans that aren't a part of this site. I sat down with my friend and scrubbed through the movie to show him the amazing quality of the work, keeping a full screening for a couple weekends from now when I will hopefully have a large Hi-Def screen to play it on.

Yes, that's how excited I am seeing the Executor barrel down on the Tantive at the beginning of the movie. Blows me away! The clarity and color both! Not to mention the engines dying on the Tantive when it gets hit. Can't express enough how much your edit rocks!

No, you just have to turn off subtitles in your player settings. It's probably set to automaticly show english subs

Hey, Ady. Thank you big time for putting so much time, effort, and skill into this project. I am NOT a fan of the Episode 4 Special Edition, but your edit will be the one I watch when I want a beautiful, widescreen, professional-quality version of the film.

I haven't been this excited about Star Wars in a long time! Actually made me think about putting a Star Wars poster on my wall again. Anyone game to create a 27"x40" Revisited poster in a vintage 70's style?

Anyway, just a question on DVD-navigatability: when accessing scenes via the chapter menus, the English subtitle option automatically shows up with the movie. Is there a fix I missed?

I'm using the ISO version I downloaded from Usenet burned to Memorex DVD+R DL disc with DVD Decrypter.

What Adywan did took him a LONG time to do, and he had the benefit of doing some of the effects with 3-D computer modeling if I'm not mistaken.

A lot can be done with After Effects, too, but it'll probably be too much for someone to explain in a reponse to your thread.

You'll be compositing shots to create/modify existing footage and will likely be rotoscoping (lightsabers and composite layer elements). Check out Creative Cow for some free tutorials and poke around to see the training they have for sale on DVD.

You can also check out Lynda.com, a training pay site, for some sample After Effects tutorials.

If you have specific questions on tricks with the methods you begin to use, people on this site will probably have more to say; you can also ask folks at the Creative Cow forums.

Whoa, there, JR! My qualm is with Spielberg. I just don't think you can discount the relationship Spielberg and Lucas have had over all these years or the possibility that Spielberg didn't sign onto the film without doubts over its production or script (he clearly was concerned over the quality of the effects with his attitude that CG be minimized [tenth bulletpoint from bottom] and his decision to shoot on actual film instead of digital).

Both Spielberg and Lucas were also on notice from Harrison Ford to get a movie rolling soon or for them all to cut bait if it didn't happen soon enough for him; a very plausible reason amongst other possible reasons, such as Lucas' apparent loss of cinematic sanity, for Spielberg to agree to a script that he may not have been 100% satisfied with.

That's my reasoning: supposition based on facts to the conclusion that Spielberg helmed a poorly executed movie (not that he's responsible for it all) with major trouble in its story, flow, characterizations, photography, editing, and score.

Much like zombie, I still want to see it again, though, to test my evaluation of it. I had had an extra long day at work and was quite tired. That being said, however, there were points in the film that just weren't believable. Maybe I can come to appreciate it as an Indy adventure much as I have come to consider TOD which I originally did not care for much.

In short, I feel that Spielberg's failing with KOTCS was the lack of believable emotional gravity in the characters, between the charcaters, and between the characters and the adventure they were on.

After all the talk that he was going to dial his directorial style back to his earlier years and that his DP was going to attempt to match the photography style of the original retired DP all to match the filmmaking style of the original Indys, it felt like this movie was directed by someone who really didn't know what they were doing.

Maybe it was mostly the editing (which I can imagine Lucas weighed in on seeing as it was uneven and sloppy ala the SW prequels), but I would never have guessed that it was Spielberg behind the scenes. In almost no way did the film recall the kineticism of Duel, Jaws, E.T., or the Indy originals.

I guess I can only fault Spielberg for his loyalty to friend Lucas.

I just saw Indy 4 tonight, and I'll second ChainsawAsh on the Williams music. It was pretty lacking.

Zombie, I track with you on a lot of your posts, but I gotta disagree here. Spielberg and Lucas just didn't pull this off. Now, I didn't walk out of the theater wanting my money back, but there was SO much that just wasn't up to Indy standards. The movie wasn't as kinetic as the others.

I had read that Spielberg was conciously going to try to emulate the directorial style he had back when he did the original movies and that his current director of photography was going to try to emulate the style of the original DP. The movie failed on both accounts.

Especially in the beginning of the movie, character scenes were sluggish with a lack of crisp cuts during dialogue. In the diner scene, it felt as if the production hadn't had time to go in for the tighter shots in the Indy/Mutt coversation. The character action/interaction also didn't seem to have that same flow/connection that Spielberg gave them in the originals.

The look of the film matched pretty closely with the vibrancy of the previous films in certain scenes, but in many scenes, especially those with large outdoor vistas, the movie looked "artificial", for lack of a better term. The colors were too clean, while the overall shots looked a bit washed-out.

I could've over-looked those things more, but the script didn't really come through either. It didn't go into enough scholarly detail to make the pursuit of the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull a deserving Indy pursuit. It was that and the lack of character emotion coming through. Indy and his enemies weren't cast in high enough relief to make his adventure and ensuing plights a lot of fun to watch as the good guy overcomes the bad guys. And unlike the other movies, the characters were largely thrown together with very little in the way of character development.

To my point of disagreement with you, Zombie, if you can't expect a great deal from a legendary franchise helmed by legends like Spielberg, Lucas, and Harrison Ford coupled with Academy-Award-winning director of photography Janusz Kaminsky, who can you expect great things from? Much like the Star Wars prequels, I wonder if a more worthy installment couldn't have been made by fans of the originals.

Hey, jra. Sorry to hear that this project is being suspended unless someone else picks up where you left off.

I've felt overwhelmed by my Episode 3 edit and can sympathize with feeling that you're in over your head. I'll be checking out your final clip when I can download it at home.

Not that others will necessarily solve your technical issues for you, but people around here can be pretty helpful. If you have the time to learn, post a question in the "Technical Discussion" forum; maybe someone can help.

You'll still be around the forum, though, right?

Oh, okay. Thanks for the explanation, JR. The background warping is another good thing about using the composite approach instead, as the background isn't effected by the belly addition.

Good point about Palp's manipulations; Mustafar would be a great place for Palps to carrying out further emotional twisting of Anakin by orchestrating what would seem to him to be only chance occurrences.

ben danger: some women look even more pregnant than this from what I've seen. I don't know Natalie Portman's height, but she always seems to be on more of the petite side in movies I've seen her in, so I think the belly size does well, especially when we know that her character is actually carrying twins.

That rotoscoping job on Anakin's saber was nicely done. I like the red saber, too, and, if Anakin were to construct a new saber or simply replace his saber's crystal with a red one between the time he massacres the Separatist leaders and the time Padme arrives on Mustafar, I think it would work well to explain some of the time that should pass while Padme journeys there.

I can imagine a sequence where Anakin metamorphosizes from emotionally-torn to resolute-Dark-Side-devotee; he'd mourn everything he had done recently like he does in the film, then march off into one of the volcanic crater's, think about tossing himself in, catch a glimpse of a shiny red jewel in the volcanic rock, touch it and have a Dark Side vision of saving Padme or of bringing peace to the galaxy with him as absolute ruler, replace his saber's crystal with the red one, then enter a trance as he waits for Padme to arrive.

But to try to actually create a sequence like that... whew! That'd take more talent and time than I've got.

Still doesn't explain the lightsaber Ben gives to Luke, though. Don't have that part figured out. If someone could cobble together some audio of Hayden Christiansen saying something like "Obi-wan, if anything should happen to me, give this to my son", then maybe something could be done. Then again, Anakin and Padme have been keeping their entire relationship a secret from Obi-Wan, though I think my edit may end up downplaying what Obi-Wan does and doesn't know significantly.

There was so much more of Anakin, Padme, and Obi-Wan's relationship that Lucas should've put on screen! Could've done it, too, probably by scrapping that whole pointless battle sequence on Kasshyk.
