Is no movie safe from this phenomenon?

Even though it's being shot on film it worth noting that all grading etc is done digitally. I think digital grading has killed a lot of films visually, not only big budget studio pictures, but indies as well.

I used to work in post production and filmmakers just can't resist pushing the colour and contrast. Blacks are never black, everything either has a blue, green or orange tint. It's awful.

Still, let's stay positive here!

I'm thinking that opening shot might have something added to it later, maybe a crashed ship or something.

I thought it was pretty good. This is the first thing to come along since 1983 that actually shows promise.

Its going to be a modern film and will have that modern look no matter who is making it (once it's on bluray just desaturate the colour). It will never seamlessly fit in with the OT visually, but it might in terms of pacing, characters etc.

I loved the shot if the x-wings, the falcon was a bit flashy, but it will be cool to see these old ships do things they never could before.

I'm guessing the weird lightsaber hilt will have some special purpose for fighting, so I'll hold off shitting on it for now.

Great that they didn't reveal the OT characters, it's a teaser. I want more.

Star Wars Battle Pod : New arcade game!
Time

I loved the Star Wars Trilogy Arcade game that came out in the late 90's and this looks like an updated version.

From what I can tell the game is on rails but you can control the movement to some degree. Looks like holding down fire when an enemy is within the large blue circle means you will automatically hit it(?). There's also a lock on for torpedoes where you can target a number of enemies at once and get a bonus.

So you control movement along a pre determined path and use the throttle to take corners sharper. Personally I'd just prefer the movement of a target around screen, but still, it's great that a new Star Wars arcade game has been made.

The graphics look stunning and I'm all for a game that puts you in the OT. I doubt it will get ported, but I'd snap it up even though it onlys lasts 20-30 minutes.

On a side note, here's an article about the canceled Star Wars Trilogy Wii game. It was to have been all the Rogue Squadron games with redone controls and fixes (the on foot sections of Rebel Strike?) The game was finished but canned at the last minute. Maybe one day it will get leaked.

In many ways, the Falcon is "home" to our heroes as much as the Enterprise is to Kirk and company.

We didn't get enough of the MF in Jedi, and we never got a scene with Han properly reunited with her. Even Star Trek 4 had a homecoming scene. The Klingon Bird of Prey's bridge set changed from Trek III to give the characters that familiar positioning. Kirk would have looked silly sitting on Kruge's high chair.

The ROTJ deleted scenes with anonymous rebels running around in the Falcon is sort of like watching strangers who have moved into your old house.

There is no beloved hunk of junk in the prequels, and the Jedi seem to change ships more than their socks. ;)

Also in the deleted sandstorm scene from Jedi you can hear Han Solo say something like "hello old girl" just before he goes up the ramp. I don't think they should've cut this scene, or Luke's alternate opening.

The Falcon does have character, though I wonder if it's still going to be as unreliable 30 years on. It would be a bit obvious, but kind of right.

That is a badass looking concept image of the "Inquisitor". If that much is true, I'm all for it.

Ever since the announcement that he was in VII, I knew Sydow would make an awesome villain. I do believe that he would be this "Inquisitor"... he's perfect for the role in every way.

I agree. That image is kind of crap, but right at the same time! Von Sydow voicing him would be great. Maybe the difference in size is because he's really tall.

On a related note, they can easily have a villain obsessed with Vader without the need for flashbacks.

What I don't get is why people complain about the Empire returning but don't complain about the Sith returning. The Empire is at least as important to Star Wars as the Sith are.

More important. I'm well happy the Empire is returning. The Sith can sod of back to the prequels.

I dont believe those pics of Solo...

I don't like either of the new stormtrooper designs really. Why do these have to be updated, we don't want R2-D2 to look any different, or sleak Star Destroyers. These are iconic designs and can just be reused.

If they kept it the same, we'd all complain about how "OH COME ON are you telling me NOTHING changed in 30 years???"

Maybe, but as I said, R2 units have looked the same since the prequels, so I don't see a problem.

Obviously in "real life" things are up graded and evolve in a design sense so it would be more realistic, but the trade off is we then don't have the visual element that made the original films so great.

It's just a personal opinion, I want to see old stuff in the new movie so that at least it looks like Star Wars. Nothing can beat the original stormtrooper, they're great.

Fair enough designing something for a new environment though, maybe that's what they are. Of the two, the second "snowtrooper" looks more like something from McQuarrie, where as the normal stormtrooper looks like and extension from the prequels.

I love the chunky look of the OT, I hope they keep some of that.

Other than Jar Jar and midichlorians, what don't you want in episode 7?
Time

I don't want characters that try to be "cool" or any knowing nods to the previous films - like a damn spaceship hiding on an asteroid / bigger ship.

I don't want any of the original cast to die.

I don't want to see the "human" side of stormtroopers, I don't want to see their faces (no hope of this if the latest rumours are to be believed)

Don't want Sith or any other Jedi except Luke... Certainly don't want dumb acrobatic twirly light saber fights. Keep it broadsword. And I don't want long jedi training scenes, talking about the Force.

Basically I don't want any reference to the PT.

I DO want the classic ships from the original trilogy, Tie Fighters, AT-AT's etc. A good Space battle would be cool, but something straight forward, not the cluttered mess of ROTS.

I want the films themselves to be made in a similar style to the original trilogy, meaning I want that Kurowsawa influence, not shakey cam, lens flare and rapid editing. I want The Searchers in space

I'm hopefull about the new film. I think JJ Abrams knows that a huge part of the attraction of the OT was not only the story and characters but the hardware, the way things looked and functioned. Even the Falcon had character. This appears to be the way they're going, using some of McQuarries designs and building real sets etc.

Will Fox prevent Disney from release OUT?
Time

With Disney now owning Lucasfilm does that now mean they own all original footage? Can they re cut the original films? Theoretically you would think so, but it wouldn't surprise me that Lucas has clauses within the contract so they can't do that.

Again, I hope he's just let it all go, but being it's his life's work I doubt it.

Edit: don't know why this damn text is so small...

My point was that Lucas isn't in control anymore. Lucas owned Lucasfilm, which produced the movies, and Disney bought Lucasfilm. Yes Disney is still beholden to previous contracts and deals, i.e. Fox distribution rights, but I doubt Disney has any requirement to put up with George's "true vision" nonsense

I'm not sure about that. I could well imagine part of the deal involved not releasing the OUT. Lucas is fanatical about this, he's spent a lot of time and energy trying to erase the original versions.

I guess it depends how much he still cares. Hopefully he has just let go.

Random memories from 1977-83
Time

I don't ever remember seeing Star Wars for the first time, it's one of those things that's always been there. I was 4 when it came but I don't actually remember the screening.

I do remember playing with my friends Land of the Jawas play set in the summer. Wow. I grew up by the beach so Tatooine was my favourite part, with all the aliens in the cantina. I remember seeing the picture of a stormtrooper on a Dewback and I thought it was a dinosaur. Didn't realise it was in the film. Lucas should really have made more of that.

I didn't really like Empire at the time, and I still think the yoda section goes on a bit. I agree it's Han's film - he gets the girl. I also thought it was someone different playing Luke, I didn't think it was really him.

I remember Jedi the most. A mate in school went on holiday to the U.S and came back with a toy poster featuring a speeder bike. I was obsessed with that. I also thought that the Tie-Interceptor's back was the front ( with the spikes going behind). When I actually saw it in the film it knocked me out, thought it looked amazing. It's all connected with collecting the figures, the summer, great times.

At the end of Jedi I was down because I knew it was over. I remember thinking the film had so much "stuff", so much to it I couldn't wait to get to school to talk about it. It's one of those films that has loads of great bits but fails to be great. But there you go, at the time I thought it was the best one.

oh, and Carrie Fisher... big impression...

Darth Id said:

You cannot have a protagonist that wears a stationary mask the whole time.

It would be UN-watchable.

Didn't they do that with the last Judge Dredd film? I didn't see it so I might be wrong.

Anyhow, I think it would work. Imagine a whole film where he hardly speaks and you learn about the character purely through his actions. Basically follow him on a really difficult mission - it would be great.

This will surely end in tears. Fett is popular because he is mysterious.

But that's what Kasdan's wants to do. His idea is that at the start of the film someone who Boba Fett is hunting kills him and takes his armour. You never see his face, there by doing away with the whole prequels thing and any knowledge of the character.

It would be a great way to start the film.

Disney has pinewood virtually fully booked for years.

Here's a report on Kasdan's writing the proposed Fett movie.

http://www.nerdist.com/2014/06/rumor-lawrence-kasdan-to-write-boba-fett-stand-alone-star-wars-spin-off/

Not sure how reliable the site is, but if it's true I hope he goes with his "man with no name" idea, making the character cool again and washing away the bitter taste of the prequels.

Maybe the pig is the new dewback?  Although, it doesn't look very mobile.  It isn't photographed in the best conditions, either.

Yes, it's all about the lighting. There was a video posted somewhere with Billy Dee singing the cantina song, it had a load of replica cantina aliens in it. I think it was a promo to show off the masks. Anyhow, because of that it was lit really bad, way too bright. Sure you could see the masks but the whole thing looked garbage.

Just imagine those pig monsters with lens flare. ;)

Seriously though, the puppets may look a bit dodgy, but I love the fact that they are actually shooting something real in front on the camera... On film!

A friend of a friend working at Pinewood just updated their Facebook with "surreal experience seeing stormtroopers walking past the window at work"

Could the the new films have proper stormtroopers in them?!? Damn I hope so.

Those pics are great btw. That pig shouted thing is fantastic. The fact that they've actually built something like that is a step in the right direction.

The Phantom Menace 15th Anniversary
Time

I got a pirate VHS of it about a week before it came out. A group of us got together and watched it. I remember as clear as day my flat mate saying "turn it off, it going to be good, I don't want to watch it". He meant he wanted to wait for the cinema...

Anyhow, he said it at the beginning, just before they landed on the planet and met Jar Jar. From that point on it got worse and worse. We watched to the end and were all depressed. Even our girlfriends who weren't particularly into Star Wars thought it was crap.

We then thought that maybe the pirate was a rough cut as it seemed unfinished. Very stilted etc. so we went to the cinema one afternoon and paid our money. It was no better.

I still think they're three of the worst films ever made, but in a weird way it's the best of the PT.

Boba Fett Spin-Off May Put a New Character in the Armor
Time

If that is Kasdan's idea its a brilliant one - if it's not Kasdan's it's still a brilliant idea. Not only does it return mystery to the character, it shuts down the prequels and allows us to forget them in the original trilogy.

I'd love them to do this... What are the chances? It's a great concept for a movie, but doesn't fit in with "canon", so I doubt it would happen - but man it should!

The fact that the films were made at all. Prequels are never a good idea, as if a film is successful enough to warrant a sequel it obviously means it doesn't need one.

By that line of thought, Lucas should never have made ESB.

And everything else afterward was shit; maybe he has a point.

Er sorry, auto correct changed prequel to sequel... Didn't catch it.
