TV Shows on DVD ruined by music replacement or cuts/edits: Restoring them back to original state (a project) (Update: The Andy Griffith Show: Season 3 DONE)
Time

FYI:

  • Northern Exposure DVD sets with the original music intact was released in Germany. It’s available on amazon.de as “Ausgerechnet Alaska - Die komplette Serie (28 Discs)”. It is in PAL, so expect speed up, but reportedly sound is pitch-corrected.

I don’t have it, but was about to buy it until I read that

  • http://www.fabulousfilms.com is reportedly releasing a Blurray version (2018) with original music intact. Again, it’ll be PAL, and region locked to B.

I pulled all this info from the great thread on br.com http://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread.php?t=246694

Harmy's STAR WARS Despecialized Edition HD - V2.7 - MKV (Released)

Hi all,

Has anyone created a sub 4GB version of the Harmy's despecialized Editions of Star Wars IV-VI? I would like to watch the movies with my family on our HD TV, which has a USB port (accepts only FAT32 formatted hard drives). I tried using Handbrake to get them down to 4GB but the audio was way off after about one hours of play.

Any help would be deeply appreciated.

From my experience, Handbrake doesn't like the "header removal compression" found in Harmy's mkv files. After turning off the compression using Mkvtools (for Mac; search for Win equivalent if needed), the sync issue will probably disappear in HB transcodes.  The AppleTV 2 preset, with only one or two audio tracks selected, and large file size unchecked, will probably result in a nice HD file that is under 4GB. Good luck!

But then again, when they did Night of the Living Dead for Rifftrax Live, it looked an awful lot like the BluRay and not a public domain print...

What do you mean? It being public domain means it is legal to redistribute a Blu-ray so long as you don't break the decryption in doing so.

Not necessarily. A bluray release of a public domain product can be protected if the distributor did something original to it. For example, if the retail release had added scenes, a commentary track, new credits or title cards, and menu, all those new elements can be protected under U.S. law. A film colour-correction and cleanup may also be protected, if shown to be unique to the release.

With regards to Rifftrax, I think they are just taking a gamble that they will not get noticed by any power players.

Info: Something that might interest folks here..."ROTJ" Editdroid Laserdisc Footage
Time

We all have bad days. Perhaps the admins were just tired from dealing with the immense sense of entitlement that people seem to have; "gimme gimme gimme". I'm excited about this project, and I want the footage too. However, I recognize that 1) its a work in progress, and 2) it's not my disc.

It seems that the only payment the archivists expect is patience, why not give it to them?

I now own the "The Making of Star Wars" iBook. I've been working on deDRM'ing the 720p for you, Harmy.

The iBook itself isn't encrypted. In fact, the ".ibooks" format is just a ZIP file, so renaming it as ".zip" allows me to get at the contents with 7-Zip.

The deDRM program, Requiem 4.1 (the final version), will only work with iTunes 10.7, so I have it and iTunes 10.7 installed in a Windows XP virtual machine running on VirtualBox.

Requiem claims that it can't find any DRM'd files in my iTunes library (yes, I made sure to download the book with iTunes in the VM first), so I extracted all the files and invoked it from the command-line as "requiem.exe input-file output-file" where input-file is one of the m4v files from the iBook.

Requiem determines that the m4v is DRM'd, but gets stuck in the "working" state and never produces an output file.

This is just a progress update.

The media files within the .iBooks package are encrypted. Requiem 4 does not have the iBooks decryption feature. You need to use Requiem 3.3.6. Additionally, you may need to downgrade to iTunes 10.5. iBook decryption was never fully fleshed out by Brahms, and only worked sorta kinda, if you were lucky.

An alternative method is outputting the video segments through an iPad HDMI adapter to an HDMI input card. It may require one of those HDMI splitters with the unadvertised HDCP-removal feature. Perhaps it'll offer a good quality capture.

Making of Return of the Jedi (the book) Thread
Time

As a fan, I can appreciate the feeling of entitlement to something new that was not released in a prior version, because "I already bought it".* However, I can also understand the perspective as an IP rights owner releasing a new version of a product being frustrated when folks pirate it. The dead tree version and the digital book are two completely different products; there was an additional cost that went into the latter, with new formatting and added content.

E.g., Just because I had Mario Kart on an SNES cartridge doesn't mean I should expect to get the new version on the Wii disc, gratis. Even though they are, after all, pretty much the same game. ;-P

In any event, this iBook series gives me a reason to finally spend some of those discounted iTunes cards I had bought during sales.

*Kindle versus iTunes version is especially frustrating, but it's always good to research before purchase. ;-)

I just downloaded the files from tehparadox via jdownloader 2 and when I get to extract it says the rar files are corrupted.

I am on mac and don't know what to do. Will I have to download all the files again?

Try unrar with separate application (e.g., unrarx). Look at the rar extract log and it should show you the problem file. Download again the corrupted segment.

Using Handbrake for Apple TV 3: Converting DTS-HD-MA and Other Despecialized Edition Questions
Time

Continue to trust the defaults. ;) In the past I'd do a spot check for really dark films by encoding a single chapter, and then bump the RF down a tick if too messy, but I haven't needed to do that in a while.

For high definition sources (e.g., Harmy's releases and BluRay) the AppleTV3 preset is best.

For standard definition sources (e.g., DVD) use the AppleTV 2 preset, because the ATV3 is a waste.

I'm curious about the audio phasing deal; I hadn't read about that. I had HB create the default Dolby Pro Logic track and a AC3 track from the DTS (along with the commentary and music tracks). I haven't watched 2.5 all the way through to notice anything odd. Also, while the AppleTV cannot play DTS now, you can future-proof and add it as "pass-thru".

Subler is great, especially with the new version which can search iTunes and automatically pull down the content ID. HB + Subler is such a wonderful combination. :)

Star Wars Trilogy 7" 33 1/3 book and record set (Released)

Neat preservation.

If you have a record shop with a pro record cleaner, it may be worthwhile to ask them how much per to clean. If not, an anti-static brush at the minimum, and search through the many other methods online (e.g. wood glue method). A good cleaning can help an old used record sound substantially better.

Audacity is very good audio software with a good wiki and active forum full of knowledgeable audio folks. Many suggestions within about click, pop, and noise removal. Tutorials on youtube too. The software ClickRepair can deliver amazing results. There is a workflow discussion on Audacity forum about it.

Have fun!
