The theatrical colors of the Star Wars trilogy

I reduced the effect of the LUT in the project by 50 percent. While this variant does not have the same Technicolor look, the colors are retained and it falls more in line with the home video releases - and the white are no longer clipping! I also added additional green values in the highlights.

Here’s the LUT for download: https://drive.google.com/open?id=0B1-W6ByLSZVKSHVmRFFYeG9Oamc

Dam it JawsTDS, you belong in the hierarchy of the very talented people here at OT.com. That looks so nice!

Tweaked a bit previous settings; lowered green and saturation a bit, increased gamma and contrast; top WOWOW, bottom WOWOW 2017ReGrade2:

Don’t want to push too much, because I’d like to leave some details in the shadows, and avoid black crush/white clipping as much as possible.

Okay…I’m trying to adjust my colors as well, and although I can’t count on my monitor to give me accurate colors, I think this is close…albeit, I know I have the colors much more saturated then Dre’s here:

Other than the colors being more saturated, am I close to how these settings should look? I ask again, because I can’t trust my own monitor to give me a proper look.

Leia really looks natural here, at least to me. Great Job!

I’m sorry to disagree, perhaps I don’t understand but R2 looks blue to me, at least in this shot.

For those that are wondering, the bootleg williarob posted is actually a pretty good color reference. It’s colors are very vibrant, and there are a few surprises:

Green corridor, but no blue R2-D2.

I’ve watched your 50gb versions back to back over and over again. You created retail quality discs. Amazing quality. Thank you Sir.

I’m curious to know, how are people finding the commentaries? Have any fav’s so far? I’ve enjoyed listening through the comedy ones, esp the Super Ego commentary for ESB, and can also recommend The Canon for SW, and Half in the Bag for ROTJ.

I liked the contrast of your previous version, but the sky really profits from either the reduced contrast or added yellows. DrDre, what if you lower the contrast just by a bit in comparison to the first version?
I fiddled a bit around with Photoshop and multiplied 30% luminance of the new one with the old one, which results in this:

http://screenshotcomparison.com/comparison/196883

I really like it, but it’s just my view through a calibrated, but not professional display.

NeverarGreat, if you don’t want this discussion in your project, I can of course move that to a private topic 😉

Here’s the same colors as the last set with the contrast of the previous set:

Just WOW. Eye candy for sure.

I can’t express how happy I am right now. By some chance, I came across an article today discussing the reworks that were made to the original trilogy to get them up to Blu-ray quality. It’s what brought me here. I grew up watching these movies in theaters. I was too young to remember seeing star wars at the drive-ins with my parents but that wasn’t the case for the rest in theaters.

During those years, it was these movies that brought my best friend and I together. I have so many fond memories of my best friend and I going to see TESB as kids. I recall us being in such awe of the effects and vivid scenes as we watched the movie so intently, and I recall leaving the theater playing out the lightsaber fight scenes as we walked out and being so disappointed that we had to wait for the next movie to come out.

When ROTJ came out the excitement was on high again and it was so apparent that an article was written about it and was featured on a local paper. We had been waiting in a very long line to watch the movie with toys in hand, and us playing out lightsaber scenes again. A reporter had been there to write about the movie release and about the fans in the long line; it’s where he happen to see us playing. He used our story for the article in which he touches on the fact that my friend and I came from very different cultural backgrounds and yet this movie brought us closer together and how oblivious we were to our differences because of it; my friend Rason was from African American descent. About a year or two after ROTJ was released I had to move far away and in the process I lost contact with my friend. I have reminisced so much of those times since then.

I’m an old guy now and in very poor health now. I’ve been hoping and praying for so long that lucas would eventually put out the original trilogy in a SHD format, and not ones with the new CGI scenes that I have now which don’t compare. For me to get and watch these originals before I meet my demise is all I’ve ever really wanted. When I got here and saw that these films were remastered, and when I got to see some of the screen shots, I won’t lie, it brought tears to my eyes. Longer story short, I’m here now and I just signed up for an account.

I’m begging, if not pleading that one of you please provide me with links to the movies mentioned with all the features included. I’d also be willing to pay good money if someone can provide them already on working high end Blu-ray disks with all the box art work. This will also give me the opportunity to pass them on to my son. Hopefully he and I can build some memories from these movies too. I apologize for this lengthy post but I hope you will understand and see the urgency in this for me to get these movies as soon as I can. A very very big Thank You goes out to those involved in remaking these films! I really can’t express my gratitude to all of you just as I really can’t express my anger toward lucas for not releasing the original films in high quality. It’s really unfortunate that fans had to take it upon themselves to do this, but I really thank you for it!

I am really touched by this.

Try getting in touch with HanDuet in Facebook.

He often does giveaways for MySpleen invites.

I could’ve given you an invite as a Christmas gift but sorry, I can’t since I am only a regular user there and I need to wait a while to become a Power User, which then I can give you an invite.

Merry Christmas, and for your quest to find the Despecialized Editions, good luck and may the Force be with you.

Thank you Swift for the suggestion. It’s ok, I’ve waited so long already that I’m sure I can wait a bit more till something comes up. There was another person who was nice enough to help but I didn’t respond on time. I’m not that good at navigating on this site and I hadn’t been back to check messages or anything; I didn’t think anyone would respond so fast being that it was during the holidays. I really do appreciate all your warm thoughts, responses, and efforts though. I can already tell this is a great community of people and I’m glad I came across this site, even if I don’t get a hold of the movies, at least I still have gained something positive from this.

I’m hoping some of you guys might be able to help me out. I’m trying to download Harmy’s Despecialized Editions but it appears as if tehParadox has been shut down! Does anybody have any idea how to get around this, or another possible site to download from?? Also, i’m not completely sure what version the Despecialized Editions are up to now, so any of you guys who know more about it than me (which is probably all of you!!) a bit of info on that would also be greatly appreciated!

  • Regards, RogueJedha

Hello there, I just wanted to ask, what exactly is MySpleen? And why is it required for this site? I am really new to this forum (like, I signed up today-new) and have no idea what I have to do. Could someone please explain it to me? Thanks in advance!

You’ve walked into an echo chamber. Expect snarky one-liners and no form of any reasonable answer.

A little joke. No need to get all worked up about it.

I stumbled upon the Despecialized Editions yesterday after some inquisitive Googling. My husband and I had just watched a couple of docs on Netflix about behind the scenes of Star Wars and he was bemoaning the fact that he could no longer watch the Star Wars movies that he had watched as a kid (he remembers going to the theater two days in a row with his godfather when he was six to see the Empire Strikes Back). I, myself, have never seen the unedited versions.

We are both absolutely blown away by the dedication, passion, and creativity of those who are involved with restoring these films. The work you all have done is absolutely mind-blowing and I cannot thank you enough.

I’m currently downloading the MKV files, but would absolutely love to get access to this BlueRay set so I can put together a box set to give to my husband for his birthday. If someone would let me know how to go about doing that, I would be extremely grateful!

Contact me via PM if you want to talk about getting the set.

Could you please be more specific about the bluray discs you used? I’ve tried to find what you are talking about but have come up empty. Thanks a lot.

I used HP double sided brochure paper for the sleeves. I used an epson metallic photo paper for the slipcase and poster folders. When making the slip case I use a roll of 3M dry mount the print onto a thin poster board and double sided carpet tape to close the case. I also use a 3M gloss laminate sheet over the top before doing the folding indentations. The disks were a aqua seal gloss disk. Hope that helps.

THank you very much
