Carrie Fisher - Hidden Gem Video Clip from SNL
Time

It’s actually something you’ve likely all seen, and likely something you all likely have stashed on a hard drive somewhere. However, NBC/SNL yanks down any attempt at posting it and they STILL have yet to add it to their website or YouTube channel.

I actually had it up years ago and for fear of losing my channel, I never even attempted to repost it.

However now…I figure if I keep search terms out and keep it unlisted, but post the link, any fans can share with others who might not have it or seen it, but would like to.

I’ve seen one or two people on Facebook posting it, but with an original version. This one’s from an E! repeat, so it’s a bit clear than I’ve otherwise seen.

The Original Trilogy restored from 35mm prints (a WIP)

A few, very rare times, the cinema owner or projectionist would keep the print instead, and store it away.
That lead to a secretive ‘grey market’ for 35mm theatrical prints amongst private collectors…

Well I’ll be damned. Talk about a history lesson. Thank you for taking the time an effort to write all of that Poita. It’s like we’re all a band of rebels trying to do our part to fight an empire…that sounds familiar.

I remember when all of this technology was dawning. The fantasies of everything being preserved. Anything you wanted would be at your fingertips anytime. Amazing how greed and ego can continuously stifle progress.

I can’t wait for Harmy to release what may wind up being the best archival representation of this important piece of our culture.

Can someone help me understand the whole Star Wars print history?

I’m just curious about the backstory of this, as for a long time these projects have just been cobbling together rips of retail releases and TV recordings.

How did full 35mm prints of the movies turn up? How many are out there in the public? (Because I assume having them, or access to them, is uncommon?)

Does what Poita or TeamNeg1 have represent the best available in public?

I know this information is somewhere, but I wouldn’t know where to begin to find it here in the forums. I can’t say how awesome it is that this is happening. I donated to the cause and would do so again for an archival, historically accurate (as much as possible) set of the OT.

Blu-Ray and other HD box size STAR WARS covers
Time

After seeing this thread all I can do is wish I owned a printer and Blu-ray burner.

I looked over all of the submissions here and compiled my favorite covers, disc arts and insert image.

All I can do now is beg. Beg another fan to burn me Harmy's ANH 2.5, ESB 2.0 & ROTJ 1.0 onto Blu-rays and print the disc stickers and other art....or just the art in the link below. I may be able to find someone w/ a burner.

I apologize if this isn't the right place for this. As much as I'd love to pay someone for this, I have to honor the spirit of this website and only offer compensation for materials used.

I already have all of Harmy's current MKV files on my HTPC and backed up, but to have them on a shelf with amazing art and in physical form would be amazing. They'd look killer next to my 90's hologram VHS slipcase boxset. :D

Anyway, again I apologize if I should not make this request here. Even if I never get a set, thanks to everyone who took the time to make and share all of this art. It's really awesome.

If I do get lucky though. Here's a link to the set I'd love to have:

And of course, THANKS HARMY! lol

Harmy's THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK Despecialized Edition HD - V2.0 - MKV & AVCHD (Released)
Time

I just saw a clip of the end of The Empire Strikes Back where Adywan put HD video to an audio track that someone recorded in the movie theater back in 1980. So you got to hear the cheers when R2 fixed the Falcon's hyperdrive and the chuckles as Vader did his double-take out the viewport.

I thought it would  be fantastic if Harmy's ESB had that full audio track but the odds of that are naturally pretty slim.

However does anyone know where to find the audio track? Perhaps even in-theater tracks for each OT movie?

I think it would be a pretty awesome experience to pop it on an MP3 player or phone and listen to it while watching Harmy's ESB on mute. :D

So the digital version of these books has only been out for a few days, and already certain people are ripping it and sending copies of it to each other?! Way to go!

Did it not occur to anyone here that the author might VERY well hang out here sometimes.......? Instead of copying it why not support his work by PAYING for a copy? There's a ton of hard work that has gone into these books, the least we can do here is to support work like this - as we support certain projects here - not copy it as if we were entitled to it. Not like this is a preservation project or something...!

Not cool...

You make it sound like people are taking candy from babies. Everything in context my friend. What's not cool is trying to take advantage of the loyalty and faith of the fan base by releasing these "enhanced editions". I'm willing to give them the benefit of the doubt that they didn't have this content ready in time for an attached DVD inside each book, which can easily be argued against. However what you can't deny is the lack of allowing fans who bought the physical copies the opportunity to, at the very least, purchase the additional content digitally for a reasonable fee.

Legally it might be wrong but morally I have no qualms with this at all because what they did was not right in the purest version of the term.

Making of Return of the Jedi (the book) Thread
Time

I'll throw my 2 cents in here. I've spent the past hour or so trying to get the video off of the iTunes versions of the books with no luck.

It's easy enough to get the M4V files from each book. Just use an unzip utility to extract them.

I tried 3 different programs people have sworn by that removed DRM from M4V iTunes videos, but the problem is, each program opens iTunes and looks for the videos. So they will strip a bought/rented TV show or movie.

If I drag the files over the open program they get recognized but the conversion fails each and every time.

Unless someone figures out how to strip the DRM from each file directly, I think the only option is to output the video to a TV or PC via various cables/hardware and use the TV/PC as a pass-through to then capture the video as it plays.

Unfortunately I don't own anything that does this.

Harmy's STAR WARS Despecialized Edition HD - V2.7 - MKV (Released)
Time

I have a question that probably has been asked before, but I'm unsure how to search 344 pages to find it.

Basically, I've been collecting Star Wars digital material for decades now and while I have not watched each version, can someone who has watched the major ones tell me if I'm right?

Question is, the fan made version which most comes close to the theatrical OT. The top 3 I think are:

OCP Classic Edition

This Harmy Despecialized Edition

Adywan Revisited Edition

My gut is telling me Harmy's should be the closest? If I am remembering right, OCP's is a DVD/LD mashup which is very close but no other updates plus resolution issues. Adywan's, while very good resolution, color correction, etc.....contains a lot of personal additions/upgrades that never existed.

This one though, seems to just be great resolution, purist content with slight updates like color correction.

Am I right or am I really off the mark and need to do a lot more research? :) Thanks.

You can keep polishing a turd, and it's still just a turd.  A Blu-ray/GOUT hybrid would be too jarring to both the eyes and ears.  If I'm wrong, then please, one of you editor types, chime in and tell us.

LOL Yeah I understand what you're saying. Although to be honest, even if I'm thrown from Blu-ray to a VHS of Lapti Nek, it would be a lot less jarring than having to watch Jedi Rocks. Ditto for all the other crapola. :)

Star Wars coming to Blu Ray (UPDATE: August 30 2011, No! NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!)

I know a lot of you are angry and frustrated about the OOT getting ignored, but is anyone a little bit happy about this announcement?

What I mean is, if these transfers are amazing and the best we'll likely ever see, through the talents of fan editors we can have the best versions of the OOT than ever before.

With the big stuff (SE CGI scenes, ANH Jabba, ANH Greedo Shot, ESB Emperor, ESB Wampa, ROTJ Jedi Rocks, and ROTJ Anakin Ghost...did I miss anything?) cut out and old (best available) put in, I think a lot of us would be happy. Happier maybe. No? I know there are a ton of other little bits and audio issues as well, but that's really what is the core crap. The stuff that wasn't part of what we grew up with that sticks out like a sore thumb.

Personally I have an OOT for ANH & ROTJ that is kinda crap quality, but at least doesn't piss me off when I watch it. And my HDTV edited ESB is awesome.

So I can't help but cross my fingers and hope other fans with more talent than me put out a basic "OOT" of (mostly) Blu-ray quality. :)

Why not put out a "volume 1" so something is out there and then do a Volume 2 later if someone with content finally decides to contact you? Just curious

Interesting. However, other than begging people, I don't know where to obtain the releases here. So what I think I'll do is make my own! I've already found a torrent of the saga so I won't have to bother ripping my own copies. I think I'll do a Jedi only version and then a "fight" version with all the combat in the saga rammed together. Easy enough to edit roughly together.

I think I'll name these ghetto releases:

"Jedi Fight Club" and "Battle Stations"

I was talking with some guys at work that were crapping on the prequels plot/acting sore points. I made a joke that there should be a fan edited version of them that’s just the lightsaber fights/Jedi battles strung together. We all gave a chuckle and then went, hey, that would be pretty cool to see!

I know I can’t be the first to imagine such a goofy fan edit, so where else should I look than these board!? So, does a fan edit like this exist? And not just for the prequels either. Something like this for the entire saga would be pretty sweet.

I’m also not referring to only a DVD video version. I’m not assuming something like this would deserve that kind of attention. I figured there would be better odds that a nice Divx version might exist.

I believe LucasFilms responded to questions on the quality of the upcoming releases and they stated it will be taken from the best source available for the non-SE OT. Which are the Laserdiscs. I think Sansweet confirmed that as well. Now like I said, a lot of people here say it's the Laserdisc Masters, so it will definitely be better than ripping the Laserdiscs to DVD, but we'll see.

It has been confirmed by Lucasfilm that the 1993 laserdisc masters will be used.

"The 1993 Laserdisc masters represented the best source for providing the original versions as DVD bonus material. Although these are non-anamorphic versions, they do preserve the original widescreen composition of the movies."(Lynne Hale - publicity@lucasfilm.com)

Boom goes the dyanamite!

Thank you Mielr for taking the time to grab that quote!

Or it would work with people who have HD capability w/ a widescreen LCD monitor on their PC, but w/ no HDTV, like me.

Well now that I know they are drawing from the Laserdisc Masters rather than just dumping the old Laserdisc content onto DVD, it might just be better. We'll see though. Personally I prefer the best quality regardless of piracy. I've been taken advantage of long enough.

The 9/12 DVD are not being taken from the laserdiscs, they're being taken from the laserdisc MASTERS. There's a huge difference there.

Gotcha. From Zion's post above it also seems like the new LD Master transfers coming next month will be better than the DVD/LD mash-up I've got. Best so far I'm guessing until X0 is done?

I now look forward to *cough* renting these from Netflix.

I think I'll wait for the X0 Project to be done. I'm curious to see how the very best LD rip stands up to the 2004 DVD/LD combination. At the very least the LD parts will all be better. And hopefully, eventually, someone will splice together as pure an OT version as possible using the best resolution sources available, the X0 Project and the upcoming HD Cinemax broadcast.

But the reissued DVDs? Hell no. LucasFilm already admitted after the announcement that the non-SE OT versions on the new DVDs are just bonus material taken straight from the Laserdiscs without any work done on them. I'd imagine X0's version would wipe the floor with the official ones since they're actually taking time to fix things.

Yeah, that's what I was thinking. But even if the Xvid is bigger than a DVD-R, that's why we have torrents.

Hopefully the X0 Project has access to the Cinemax HD stuff. *crosses fingers*

My mistake. I wasn't specific enough in explaining my views on this. Some SE effects, colors, brightness, don't bother me. Like, I don't mind adding more fighters into the Battle of Yavin scene, but the ride into Mos Eisley and Greedo shooting first, and the end of ROTJ I can't stand. I had assumed the versions I have are more in-line with what I just said. My bad.

Just curious about why you think this. I'm not saying you're wrong now, I do think I probably don't have all of the information on this, but it's my understanding that the LDs were ripped to DVD, and all LucasFilms is doing is the same thing. No actual work on correcting or improving anything. Just the same dump that fans have done. According to the articles I've read anyway.
