But I agree Mara Jade was badass. There aren't enough badass women in star wars. I've liked mara jade ever since playing the Jedi Knight Dark Forces 2 expansion pack Mysteries Of The Sith. It was fun playing that game.

Exactly. After reading Heir to the Empire I wanted to know more. I liked the fact that she wasn't so high and mighty like Leia is in the EU.

I'm probably the only one who enjoyed the More lighthearted bantam books years and the old del rey years than the new del rey which started with vector prime in 1999.

Yes we had superweapons of the week and cheesy comic book plots but it was fun while it lasted, before star wars went all dark and edgy and post modern thanks to the emo prequels.

And before the EU had to be comepletely rewritten backwards and forwards to fit the prequel universe.

Every book now written has to reference those prequel movies and is uncescapable.

Especially when they do a bad retread as the they did with the legacy of the force novels.

They lost me when they killed Mara Jade that was the last straw as far as i'm concerned other than ruining the character of Jacen Solo and making him a carbon copy of Hayden Vader.

I agree. I really cannot get into any new SW fiction (Shatterpoint is the only exception). Mara's death was pretty much the final straw for me-along with Jacen pulling a prequel Anakin. General rule of thumb: only read SW fiction pre-1999.

I agree, I was never really sure why everyone hated the 97s so much. Obviously, they weren't quite as good as the O-OT, because a lot of stuff just felt tossed in ("Look! Remember Shadows of the Empire? Well, here's a swoop and the Outrider! Also, a big dinosaur! And falling Jawas! And an angry droid! And a shot of Vader getting off his shuttle at Cloud City! And more Dewbacks, and a Sentinel-class shuttle, and so many awesome things that we just HAD TO SHOW YOU!) But they didn't screw with too much, other than Greedo shooting first. And it was nice to see the cleaner picture than the old Faces VHS box.

I loved the SE. Aside from the horribly flamboyant jabbas palace dance number they showed real charm. I grew up with the originals and I am proud to say I still have the originals. Most of my frustration I take out on the DVDs are the fact that I can't see the Star Wars I grew up with in higher quality than laserdisc. I want to show my children these movies. I want them to say oh the originals were soo much better. I like what adywan is doing. I think it is this site that makes me proud to be a star wars nerd again. Before I came here I was just an old fan who thought I would never see the original star wars in high quality. Now I am still the same person I just have friends to cry with LOL

Add the 97s to that. I became disenchanted with everything SW after the prequels and lack of OOT restored. This site and a 97 letterboxed VHS set have gotten me out of carbon freeze. BTW, don't chilled monkey brains taste like jello? May be just my crazy taste buds after the peanut butter filled beetles.

Please do the 97 SE at some point - I might hate it, but it's certainly preferable to the 04 SE, and the fact that it's not the original version doesn't mean it shouldn't be preserved in the best possible quality as well.  And the more transfers (especially one from such a badass piece of equipment as yours seems to be), the better!

I second this. The more 97 SE transfers the better-this way they won't get lost in the Sarlacc's belly for 1,000 years.

Top ten films of the '80s.
Time

1.Blade Runner-"I've seen things you people wouldn't believe..."

2.Raiders of the Lost Ark-if not for near perfection, simply for the scene in the Cairo bar-"You wanna talk to God?"

3.The Empire Strikes Back

4.Once Upon a Time in America-butchered on release, Leone's epic has such depth that I was bowled over. Beats Godfather II hands down.

5.The Living Daylights-Dalton is fresh and the film just plain works-which is the less than I can say for any Bond since.

6.The Road Warrior-Mad Max is back..and he's got a dog...

7.Return of the Jedi-many childhood memories.

8.The Shining and Full Metal Jacket-Kubrick's two 80's entries. How we miss you Stanley.

9.Die Hard-Alan Rickman and Bruce Willis..need I say more? Oh. Yippee ki-yay...

10.Temple of Doom-sheer fun. "No time for love Doctor Jones!!"

Top ten films you desire to see in a movie theatre...
Time

I could write this list forever. How can you only have 10??

Sergio Leone's Westerns (Dollars trilogy/Once Upon a Time in the West/Duck You Sucker) (The Good the Bad and the Ugly would be the original US cut-hate the extended English version)

Every Kubrick film (saw Dr. Strangelove and 2001 in 35mm-want to see 2001 in Cinerama!)

The Star Wars Trilogy. OOT restored if possible-or 97 SE.

Most assuredly the 70mm restoration of Lawrence of Arabia-the most beautiful film ever made. Plus David Lean's other epics Kwai, Dr. Zhivago, and Ryan's Daughter.

The entire Bond series-saw Dr. No and Thunderball as rereleases!

Lots and lots of film noir-Double Indemnity/Ace in the Hole/Detour/Maltese Falcon/Chinatown. Out of the Past is unbelievable in a theater.

The Godfather, but even more so-Apocalypse Now (original).

The Indy trilogy.

Die Hard would be awesome.

The Wild Bunch-with other Peckinpah (Straw Dogs/Alfredo Garcia/Pat Garrett original cut)

THX-1138

These are off top of my head.

Ones I have seen: Blade Runner Final Cut in a theater blew my mind even after numerous viewings over the years. Vertigo is meant to be seen on the big screen-saw a new print of the 1998 restoration and it was phenominal. Would love to see Notorious. Solaris was insane in 35mm-Tarkovsky's vision should only be seen that way. Saw The Good the Bad and the Ugly but was the English extended cut. And of course, my greatest experience is still ANH in 1997.

Max_Rebo's '97 SE superset' preservation (* unfinished project *)

Out of sheer curiosity, how do these broadcast versions compare to the US LD set? Have considered obtaining one, but held off in favor of this. Also, does any version feature a DTS track? Heard somewhere that there is a DTS version, and today found a listing on ebay for a DTS CD soundtrack of ANH.

"For an entire generation people have experienced Star Wars the only way it's been possible-on the TV screen. But if you've only seen it this way-you haven't seen it at all..."

There's a Dolby 5.1 track, but no DTS - but to my knowledge (and I could be wrong), the only difference between DD and DTS tracks on DVDs is compression (DD is more compressed than DTS).

That's what I thought, but then I ran across these on ebay.

http://cgi.ebay.com/Star-Wars-DTS-Digital-Sound-disks_W0QQitemZ220446776564QQcmdZViewItemQQptZUS_Movies_Other_Formats?hash=item3353a6dcf4&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14&_trkparms=65%3A12|66%3A2|39%3A1|72%3A1205|293%3A1|294%3A50

Not sure what exactly this is, but it seems to be a DTS soundtrack for the 97 ANH-this is some kind of DTS CD precursor to DTS tracks on DVD I think.

If Lucas did a proper oot restoration for blu ray and dvd would he be forgiven for the special editions and the prequels?
Time

The SEs are not the problem. It is the fact that he just sits on original versions deeming them unwatchable. (Those are the versions that made you acclaimed in the first place!)

IF the OT is released, fully restored as it should have been long ago-there will no longer be any problems. It is George Lucas after all. Where would we be without SW, ESB, ROTJ, Indy, and THX?
