Halloween Movies '09 Thread
Time

I always try to go through some of the classic Universals, and vow to make it all the way through the Legacy Collections-but never can. (They get sooo bad towards the end!!) Also a big hammer fan.

Frankenstein/Bride of Frankenstein/Son of Frankenstein

The Invisible Man (1933)

Dracula (1931 of course and the Spanish version)

Curse of Frankenstein/Frankenstein and the Monster From Hell -is Must be destroyed good?

The Hammer Draculas- especially Horror of  and Prince of Darkness. (Will try and get through the whole series this time-this means re-watching AD 1972....why do I do this to myself?)

The Mummy (1932 and 1959)

And my personal favorite: Vincent Price in anything. Especially Theater of Blood, Dr. Phibes, and the Poe series.

Watching The Birth of a Nation

I've been meaning to watch Lon Chaney's Phantom of the Opera.

 Brilliant beyond measure.

Needs a fan-edit though. At the last second the studio was too afraid of presenting a sympathetic monster, so they had The Arab say "Oh, by the way, the Phantom is an evil homicidal maniac escaped from Devil's Island, not a tortured genius shunned by humanity and pushed into evil"  That moment seriously dampens the pathos Chaney's brialliance had built up for the Phantom.

Been meaning to see this too, but didn't know which version of it is better.

The YCM color scheme is actually very accuate to the original prints. Lucas wanted the colors to look exactly as they had in 1977, but all the prints had faded--except the Technicolor prints. Technicolor is dye-transfer, not photo-chemical. Since Technicolor prints are hard to find in good condition (I believe they were only made in 1977), Lucas leant them his own personal 1977 Technicolor dye-transfer print, which looked the same as it had when he put it in storage twenty years earlier, saying he wanted the film to look like that. Consequently, the YCM timers used this as their reference. So the 1997 SE, barring deliberate changes in some instances (notably the R2-D2 canyon scene), is the best guide to the color scheme of the original film.

Unfortunately for us, however, it is largely lost--when the 1997 SE was put on home video it got a weird pink tint in the telecine. So if you saw it in theatres you had a faithful reproduction of the original prints, but everyone that saw it on video, in 1997 and 2000--meaning every release that wasn't the theatrical 1997 release--has seen something more useless than any other release as far as color reference goes. When Lucas put the films out on DVD, well, you know what happened with the colors there, and its unlikely that the 1997SE will ever be officially released ever again, and prints from it have all been recalled from circulation (and supposedly destroyed--this, unfortunately, may not be exaggeration, although they probably held on to some of the masters), so all that color restoration is effectively lost for all time.

The only rescue mission I can think of is if someone can get a print from the black market, which is not completely out of the question, but highly unlikely; if LFL in the future maybe puts it out as a bonus feature like the GOUT I would believe that, maybe, but if this is the case they are likely to either just use branching technology (i.e. 95% of the film will be the 2004SE color scheme) or have the individual alternate scene to view as a novelty, or simply port the video master used for the 1997 Laserdisk like they did with the GOUT, which would still have all the pink tint color issues, in either case not really doing much for us.

This is the kind stuff I have been trying to find out for years. I remember the film as being really vibrant in the theater, but the VHS leaves much to be desired. The idea is there, but the colors look off especially with that darn pink tint. There are some who claim that the original 70mm blowups of the OT looked great in the early 90's and that the 97SE paled in comparison. Any ideas?

There have got to be prints of the 97SE laying around in storage-it was a mass rerelease, and I just can't see them all being destroyed. Would it be that hard to track some of them down? What I wouldn't give for the trilogy in 35mm prints from 97. Again its a Blade Runner type situation. The 97SE compares to the 1992 Director's Cut of BR. Thus when the eventual boxset isreleased all Fox/Lucasfilm has to do is go back to the 97 print and correctly master it. WB did that for BR along with the theatrical cut, international cut, and even the friggin workprint!

Star Wars: In Concert; A Sign of More on the Way?

Yeah I got to attend the concert when it came here to my state. I have to tell you it was amazing! Getting to hear an entire orchestra playing all the great themes live. It was great and I can confirm that all episode I footage of Yoda is the new CG replacement. I also noticed that the Tantive looked more like Ady's than the DVD release. Hopefully that's a good sign.

That's what I was noticing image wise on the website. So EPI finally has the CG yoda-how was it?

I've got my fingers crossed!

How many of you actually saw the SE in theaters 12 years ago? Thoughts/Memories?

What do you think of the color scheme introduced by the YCM Labratories restoration? Does anyone have details of what exactly was done?

I'm one of the few that really enjoys this version. I prefer the originals by all means, but have a certain nostalgia for the SE mainly because I saw it first.

Also, I've grown tired of having to watch it on fading VHS with the lovely 5.1 track downmixed to 2.0 surround.

What can Be done to save the real original star wars trilogy from 1977-1983?
Time

Neither was I-it was my first SW experience. (really wish they would re-release them like that!) I agree that films should not be changed form their original state, but the garbage mattes aren't really supposed to be that noticeable. In fact, they're painfully obvious. Just for the record I went back and compared the DVDs to my long cherished VHS copies. If you look very closely you can maybe see them in certain instances, but on the discs they're right in your face.

Movies you would like to see on Blu-ray.
Time

Well, I could go on for years about everything that deserves a release.....but I don't even have a blu ray player so that would kinda be pointless.

However, these are the releases that would persuade me to go hi-def:

SW OT restored of course.

Lawrence of Arabia on at least 2 Blu-Ray discs so that we may finally have a great home video release-the same goes for Bridge on the River Kwai, Dr. Zhivago, Ryan's Daughter.

Vertigo with original soundtrack from the 2nd dvd. and other Hitchcock.

The original THX.

The original 161 min cut of the Good, the Bad, and the Ugly, and the rest of Leone's films in their original mono soundtrack! Plus a transfer of the new fully restored Duck You Sucker! that premiered at Cannes this year. Also a double Blu-ray of Once Upon a Time in America.

Mask of the Phantasm. (the old DVD leaves much to be desired.)

Citizen Kane.

Works from: Wilder, Kurosawa, Lang, Murnau, Truffaut, and the list goes on....

The classic film noirs-Out of The Past, Chinatown, The Maltese Falcon, The Big Sleep, Ace in the Hole etc.

And the entire body of work of the master, Stanley Kubrick. Barry Lyndon is supposedly going through a full restoration for Blu right now.  Paths of Glory, The Killing, Spartacus, Lolita, Dr. Strangelove (in original multiple aspect ratios), and Killer's Kiss.

I would also re-buy the Blade Runner set on Blu.

The truth is it hurts to watch star wars now. I go for classic EU novels when I want a good SW fix. The GOUTs are painful to see-especially those damn garbage mattes!

I can't blame the GOUT for that.  I find the garbage mattes to be just as visible on the '04 sets as well.  In fact, that's when I first noticed them.

You're right. I just went back to the 04 dvds for the first time in years just to check for this, and the damn things are there too! Why is it that this was the first time they were noticeable?

George has this intense desire to rework his films, and while that is his perrogative as the director-that shouldn't mean destroying the originals that made him in the first place. Can anyone show him the Blade Runner boxset-and the letter from Ridley Scott talking about "providing every version of the film so that you can enjoy your preferred version in the best audio and visual quality possible". Maybe if he sees something like this he might realize that we aren't asking to not do the new cut.

The OT, 97SE, and THX 1138 original cut deserve to be released to the public in the true "definitive collection".

As of right now we cannot see these but we can watch Howard the Duck on DVD....now that's much more than a slight weapons malfunction. BTW how in the hell did that abomination ever get on DVD???  Let alone a Special Edition!!!!

On the other thread rcb linked to a rumor that a young Luke is going to appear on the show. Having seen a young Anakin and a young "Boba", I dread a young Luke. It'd be very unlikely to be anything but more crapping on Star Wars.

Please, no-enough with the young versions!

At least we never saw that awful young Han in Ep III.

Apocalypse Now - Workprint (now available) (Released)
Time

This would be fantastic if found, but I think the quality will always be less than desirable. The Apocalypse Now Book says that the author saw the 5 1/2 rough cut with these legendary scenes on betamax tapes. This was back in 2001 just after Redux hit. (Still hate Redux.) Still something is better than nothing!

Why the hell did they have to split the film onto two discs for the supposedly "complete" dossier? it's almost like having to flip an LD or old flipper DVD. The film does not require 2 discs for bitrate!! Has anyone thought of trying to combine the two halves on one disc?

And what exactly was on that Circuit City exclusive disc? I bought mine there, but never recieved that disc like I was supposed to.

Going too far into adult-oriented stories would completely ruin SW's mentality-but of course the prequels made people wish SW had ended long ago.

The only stuff that would be worthwhile (big maybe here!) would be pre-Ep. IV smugglers against the Empire and Corporate Sector like Brian Daley's Han Solo trilogy. I for one am sick and tired of all the Clone Wars nonsense. What is the point-its not like we don't know how the war ends!

And as for 5 new shows-here's some ideas....

1.Obi-Wan's Damn Fool Idealistic Crusades-starring Adam West! (Gosh I love that guy.)

2.The Ewok Couple: Wicket and Teebo both get divorced and are forced to share an apartment.

3.Live with Sarlacc!: A talk show with the sarlacc as the host-nightly guests are all those who freshly fall in to stew for 1,000 years. Tonight-the galaxy's best bounty hunter who was pushed in by a blind man!!

4. A Telomundo produced soap opera about Imperial Garrisons...

5. Star Wars Holiday Special-THE SERIES!!

We are still working on that, should have more samples soon, the manual IVTC is a bitch amongst other things,I think the 97' SE Trilogy is going to be a piece of cake compared to this Trilogy.

Are you still working on the 97 SEs? Really would love a good version to watch (besides VHS!)-the only other project is Max Rebo's ongoing superset preservation.
