How did Vader deflect those shots?
Time

I assumed that Vader used the Force to somehow absord the bolts as he knew what a fast draw Han was. He had the drop on the galaxy's biggest badass-thus was prepared to take away the blaster. Han gets off quite a few shots though. I don't really think Vader was expecting quite that speed.

I do love the fact that Vader just toys with Han-he could easily have taken away the blaster earlier.

"Does anyone have a straw so I could eat? I'm kinda hungry..."

"What if he chokes on the brussel sprouts? He's worth a lot to me." "The Empire will not compensate you if he dies of natural causes."

If the scene existed, I envision a sligtly awkward meal that is reminiscent of Dr. No. "Tell me Vader, does the crushing of all freedoms really compensate for having a computerized James Earl Jones in your vocoder?"

How Many Star Wars Related DVDs do you have- how do you keep up with them?
Time

The atrocious 2004 Box set-watched once since September 21st 04. I was given a copy of Episode II in Widescreen. (Oh joy.) Refused to buy the GOUTs b/c I felt cheated. A friend gave me the bonus discs because he didn't want them. (His loss.)

That's it for DVDs. VHS is a whole other story:

95 Box Set, 95 THX Widescreen Box Set, 97SE Fullscreen set, 97SE Widescreen set, Ewoks: The Haunted Village (where the heck did that come from?), TPM with the holographic plastic box, AOTC, and about 12 other tapes of the trilogy from various VHS releases from the late 80's and early 90's not to mention the numerous recorded tapes from TV broadcasts.

Luke VS the Emperor- What if Vader hadn't been there?
Time

It would have been interesting for sure. The whole nature of the battle would have been different. For me, it just seems that Vader suddenly becomes weak and never really puts up much of a fight to compare with the earlier performances and menace in Empire and SW. I've always thought that there was a good chunk cut out of the final release version (all I know is the part of Luke losing his saber to Vader was cut).

Palpatine is so much more menacing by not using a physical weapon. As a kid I tried to learn Palpatine like pronounciation because it just sounded so evil.

So when it comes down to it Luke vs. Palpy can only be determined by the screenwriter. Is it a happy movie aimed more at kids, or the sequel to Empire Strikes Back?

"Alert my Star Destroyer to prepare for my arrival." What was the point?
Time

As a kid, I never realized there was a difference. The new scene doesn't fit at all pacing-wise. The line "bring my shuttle" is delivered in such a way that it firmly establishes how pissed off Vader is. (Although if he was just going to get Luke in a few minutes, why should he be so pissed?) "Alert my star Destroyer to prepare for my arrival" simply doesn't work in that scene (heard it was leftover dialogue from SW) and the fact that the snippet from ROTJ with Jejerrod is on the end just goes to show how pitiful the thought process was. They put all that time into making a CGI shot of Vader walking up to the shuttle, and then cut to leftovers?

Thread for all Usenet vs Torrent vs Rapidshare discussion
Time

I just don't have the money to put into Usenet, and I don't think that one should have to pay for better access. I like using RS or MU with jdownloader, but my school blocks almost every downloading site whatsoever. Thus no torrents, RS, or anything! It's not like I download commercially available titles! All I've ever grabbed are fan edits, OOP titles, or things never released.

I'd go for Usenet in a heartbeat just for the fantastic projects on this site, but I just can't afford it now. I'll definitely do the Giganews free trial when a good 97SE set is finished.

Thanks, AvP for the posts to tehparadox, will have to wait though since RS is blocked for me :(

Halloween Movies '09 Thread
Time

Finally saw Brides of Dracula. It's a bit too simple, (and has the painfully obvious fake bat effect.) but has Cushing as Van Helsing and Fisher behind the camera-so what's not to like? Probably third or fourth best in the Hammer Dracula series behind Horror and Prince of Darkness.

And I still couldn't get through Ghost of Frankenstein and the later ones in the Universal Frankenstein series.

The Hammer version of The Mummy is extremely underrated like their later Hound of the Baskervilles.

Vincent Price has reserved a seat for you in the Theatre of Blood!

G.I. Joe: Worst Movie Ever Made? OR... No, Really, It's the Worst Movie Ever Made
Time

Things are so bad that I've really stopped going to theaters. If I can find a good art-house theater then you can't get me to leave.

What I really would like to do is lock a huge audience in a multiplex and swap whatever crapfest they paid for to a pristine 35mm print of Tarkovsky's Solaris. Then we can see their heads roll.

I thought for the longest time that modern audiences could no longer appreciate great works of the cinema. Roger Ebert once asked: "Do modern audiences have the patience to wait for Harry Lime in The Third Man?" The answer is: yes. I started a Film Appreciation club at school, and people actually get engrossed by classic film again. So, there really is hope in the world when college students sit in rapt attention for THX 1138, Barry Lyndon, Once Upon a Time in the West, and The Third Man. I want to break out  Lawrence of Arabia and Once Upon a Time in America now just to see the reaction.

Only Imperial Stormtroopers... etc.
Time

This makes Vader seem more like a demonic presence, and also serves to prove Obi-Wan a far wiser man. Vader plays right into Ben's hands and thus the Falcon escapes. What is confusing is exactly when someone had the idea to plant a tracking device on the ship. They never found anyone on it, and it was only later that Han, Leia, Luke, and Chewie were fighting on other levels. Only Vader suspected Ben of being on board. He and Tarkin argue over it and suddenly after the Falcon leaves theres suddenly a magical tracking device!!
