Harmy's STAR WARS Despecialized Edition HD - V2.7 - MKV (Released)
Time

I don't see what the big deal is if Harmy doesn't share something he was asked not to. Sometimes sources pop up that can be invaluable in a project you're working on, but only agree to let you use what they have if you agree not to share it publicly. The public still benefits from YOUR project, they're just not privy to the source to which you were allowed access. And it would be morally wrong of you to share the info when you were only given access to it by promising not to spread it. This isn't unique to Star Wars preservations. This kind of thing happens all the time in all sorts of fields.

And there's often very good reasons to not want the info shared publicly. It's not just so they can hold it over you that they have something you don't. I've been privy to information before that i KNOW other people would love to hear, but i'm not allowed to tell them. Sharing that infomation publicly would have very likely gotten the source in trouble or worse at work. Sharing it would also have cost me the source, who also provided a whole lot of information that I COULD share publicly & will likely provide more information. Why would I share the bits I was asked not to & jeopordize the rest?

Save Star Wars Dot Com
Time

I've been needing to get in touch with Zombie for a while now & haven't heard anything from him in a few months.

I've got something I've been working on for savestarwars since October. We've had a good dialogue back & forth about it but sometimes he does disappear for a few weeks at a time. Totally understandable as he's got both work & school to juggle.

But the last time I've heard from him was mid November. I'd really like to get this stuff I've worked on out there. I don't want to get too specific, but I was doing the research to provide him with the material to write an article for the site. I've contemplated writing it myself & letting him just post it, but I'm in the middle of changing jobs and moving 1200 miles across the country so I won't really have time to work on it for a while.

Lucas' Red Tails

thing is, what we saw in 1977 was NOT what lucas described to Fox executives (not to mention he had none of john williams music to set the scene nor ralph mcquarrie and joe johnstons designs).

Actually, some of McQuarrie's ealry concept paintings (such as the one below) were what helped Lucas finally convince Fox execs to take the gamble.

Whose arm?

I'd like to muddy the waters a little more on this one dwsiddall, as I've always looked on Obi-Wan as swiping twice in this scene!

We hear the lightsaber ignite, and immediately after we see the close-up of the blaster being raised by 'Freaky Nose', we see what looks like a short 1st swipe which would account for 'Freaky Nose's right arm being severed...which is followed by a 2nd swipe which I always look on as being directed at 'Walrus Guy' standing next to him. Obi-Wan's taking no chances here. (Have a look at the footage in slow motion or frame-by-frame to get a good look at what I mean) And both characters are seen to collapse to the floor, which convinces me more.

This is the way I've always viewed the secne. He cuts them both down. And that IS Walrus Man's arm. Which means it is a goof that he has one type of hand in one shot & a totally different hand in another shot. But I can live with it. It's a low(er) budget movie from 1977. A small contnuity error isn't going to break it for me (especially when it's not even an error with the plot or timeline or anything major).

Do you know if it's a first printing? Apparently the first printing sold out (& is probably pretty rare). Then there was a second printing in 1977 or 1978 that they must've printed a TON of. I say this b/c a few years ago I went to the "Star Wars: Where Science Meets Imagination" Exhibit at the Saint Paul Science Museum. They had a decent stack of these second printings for sale in the gift store. They were uncirculated, but in varying states of condition (though most were pretty nice). I actually bought one b/c it was so cool (& such a surprise to see real vintage merch for sale at an official LUcasfilm exhibit like that!). But they were only about $20 or $25 if I remember, so probably not worth too much (especially considering they were probably a little overpriced like everything else in the gift shop...).

So yeah, if it's a first printing, it might actually be worth something, though I couldn't really tell you what.

If it's a second printing, it's not worth much but still a really cool collectable.

@canofhumdingers: I don't know, wouldn't red make it even more brown? If anything, I'd say it would need more blue and then the walls get too blue. And if you boost reds, the walls become purple.

Like I said, I'm not working on a calibrated monitor of any sort. And I'm not even remotely knowledgable in any sort of proper color correction techniques. I just thought that the skin tones, Leia in particular, might could be a touch more red, however that's accomplished.

For the record, I think the walls looked fine and (while recognizing the pretty anal nature of my own points) think some people* are on the edge of ridiculousness with how anal they can be about the tiniest hint of blue or yellow or green or what-have-you. No doubt the official releases have atrocious colors that needed fixing, but I think we're pretty much there as evidenced by the fact that we're nitpicking over the smallest increments of color shades and tints.

On other related topics, I haven't noticed any technical glitches in my first viewing. So that's good!

*I'm not trying to single any particular person out with that comment. If we weren't all pretty anal about Star Wars to begin with, none of us would be here.

Not to open a can of worms, but I was actually looking at skin tone (in particular the closeups of Leia while she's talking to Vader that You_Too mentioned) when talking about red saturation. The guy who stands next to Vader while he's talking to Leia & then walks down the hall next to Vader also looks a little brownish. But again, it's subtle & wouldn't take much of a red boost to look great.

First I'll preface my comments with the fact that I'm watching this on my Laptop's LCD screen which is most certainly not properly calibrated for video. I've tried to keep this in consideration when watching so I hope my observations help.

So, I've watched the first 8 1/2 minutes (everything up to the point we leave the Tantive IV for good).

My first reaction has to be... The crushed blacks! Where did they go!? I'm totally amazed at what's been accomplished here! I realize that my laptop screen is not accurately displaying brightness, black levels, etc. But there's no way that's enough to explain away what I'm seeing. You've pulled detail out of the shadows that I thought was gone forever in this transfer. I really wish I could put this up on my tv & see how it looks there, but I'm not that tech savvy... Anyway, it's so nice to no longer feel like I'm staring into a black hole when they do a closup on Vader's helmet!

Regarding the colors, I must say that the explosions and flashes look SO much better now. No more neon pink glare! However, for the rest of the colors, I felt like they might be toned down a little too much. It's subtle, but I feel like the over all color saturation could use a small boost. And, I realize my next comment is treading on very dangerous territory (especially when considering my comments about the flashes & explosions) but I think the reds in particular have been toned down too much. Keep in mind this is VERY slight. But I do think a slight increase in red saturation could help. But again, VERY slight.

Anyway, I need to keep watching but I'm loving what I've seen so far. I think what you guys (I'm assuming you_too helped) acheived with pulling more detail out of the crushed blacks is just blowing me away.

Was Tarkin the main villain in Star Wars?

You can find all sorts of quirks with Vader in a ANH in contrast with ESB. He seems much more emotional in the former, and while ruthless doesn't seem like he would kill his own officers at the drop of hat. (In fact given that Vader only kills officers via force choke in ESB, you could easily imagine that he's just really desperate to find Luke and typically wasn't like that through out his entire run in the Empire).

This ties in perfectly (and actually helps make my point) of Vader as a Captain Ahab type character in ESB, going mad on his quest to find something that will ultimately destroy him.

I agree with a lot of the ideas in this thread. To me, The Emperor is a bit like a mob boss. Tarkin is the head of his "legal" power, working within and through the government structure. Vader is his enforcer who does the nasty work that is clearly outside even the faintest hint of lawfulness. They have a mutual respect for each other because they're two sides of the same coin.

As for Vader's role-shift in Empire, I really like it and think it works very well. He clearly knows who Luke is long before his conversation with the Emperor (to whom he feigns ignorance of that very knowledge). And with this knoweldge, he has gone on a sort of mad, Ahab-like quest to find Luke at all costs.

In his efforts to do so he has used and begun to clearly abuse both the vaccuum left by Tarkin and the power given to him by the Emperor. I don't think Vader's in charge of the ENTIRE Imperial fleet in ESB, but he's used the lenience granted him by the Emperor as well as his own ability to intimidate the navy commanders to take command of small armada for his personal quest and is using the search for the rebels as a sort of cover to justify his real mission.

I think it's also pretty cool how icily cold and in control Vader appears to be on the outside, when inside he's clearly spiraling out of control on a lunatic's mission to find his son & convince him to join and take charge of everything he has been fighting so hard against.

about post 2342 & the high res 4:3 shots... I'm almost certain that shot of Leia & R2 is a promotional shot & not in the movie (the movie shot had more smoke in it, IIRC). I remember in the online ad campaign for the blurays that a shot like that was used & people thought maybe the blurays would look great until someone pointed out that it was clearly not a still from the movie but just a promo picture.

Which version of the end credits did you see, humdingers? The "opening day" version with the "tight" John Williams spacing, and the text at the end being spaced out really far apart, or the more familiar version that's always showed up on video?

I don't think I would ever have been able to notice the shadow if it weren't pointed out. (In fact, if one version didn't have the shadow, I'm wondering if it's even there on the starfield credits on any version, since only the scrolling section was revised, and appended onto the existing starfield section by putting in a new dissolve about half a second before the original one.)

Incidentally, while watching 2001 on Blu-ray, I noticed that the opening credits to that film also have a slight drop shadow I never noticed before.

Like I said, I'm no expert about the end credits, but they didn't look any different from what I'm used to seeing, if that helps. I don't know if I've ever seen the opening day version. But it was a pre-1981 print.

Tha Making of Star Wars (1977) - documentary
Time

Sorry for the new thread, but the search feature sucks…

Can anyone answer a few questions abou this? Is this the doc I’ve heard about that had some clips of Disney films in it’s original broadcast but were then edited out of subsequent home video releases?

If so, is there anywhere to see the original version with the clips intact?

If there’s no way to see it, does anyone have a time stamp of when the clips should be in the show? Even a close estimation within a few minutes would be helpful.

Thanks!
