I think I found a bug in reel 1: Jabba’s first line after Luke’s hologram finishes is missing its subtitle
“There will be no bargain”. This is at the 10 second mark. I had to go back and make sure it was originally subtitled and on 4K83, it is. Happens in both 1080p and UHD versions.

Have previewed the theatrical cut of Fellowship in 4K across a few different displays: an HDR TV set, a P3 capable iMac, and our BenQ projector (1080p). All three looks very good, and certainly filmic. There is certainly some DNR going on but I feel like it’s always been there, even when I projected it in 35mm.
Projecting it looks terrific after tweaking our SDR projector to handle the incoming image. I’m sure it could improve with some more work. That setup is using an Nvidia Shield with Kodi to the Benq.
I may have to grab the whole set now if this one is any preview of the rest of them. Fellowship to me was the most important because both Blu-ray releases were very flawed, while TTT and ROTK looked terrific. I’ve even sync’d the theatrical DTS of Fellowship to it. Well, it matches the sync I did with the Blu-ray almost perfectly. Looking forward to watching the whole thing!
EDIT: I forgot to mention…the bigger or closer you view this thing, the better it is. I can see why some reviewers weren’t happy. They’re likely sitting too far away to observe the grain as it is very very fine. On the iMac and the projector, you can see it clear as day. Not so much on the TV from across the room.

Another anniversary, another botched release of Jurassic Park on video. But not all is bad.
It has finally hit in 4K UHD and it looks pretty terrific. Alas, the DTS X track is based on the new mix done for the 20th and it still just isn’t right. Anyone have skills to rip a 4K disc and mux our 5.1 DTS audio? A dinner with Dr. Wu to whoever can accomplish this.
I can’t believe they finally got the image relatively right. It looks lovely.
Does anyone have the DTS discs for Titanic? Anyone willing to do a sync or has anyone possibly done that already?
I’m more just keen on comparing the track to the Blu-ray which some friends of mine claim have been changed from the theatrical mix. To my ears, the AC3 and DTS LaserDiscs do sound better than the Blu-ray, but it’s close.
Requiem looks like it no longer works with current versions of iTunes. I found one called M4VGear but it’s a $50 license to get it to work!

Hello all! This classic movie has seen Blu-ray release in Europe but it’s only in 2.0 DTS-HD. The LaserDisc was the same way: just a PCM track.
Theatrically, the film had a Dolby Digital release in very limited numbers with a fun, gimmicky track that suits this film very well. The iTunes store has the film and it has a 5.1 track that is likely the same but how in the heck do you rip it through all that DRM?
I’d be willing to rip it and share if someone knows how to even do that with iTunes movie files.
I’m in the same boat. Did anyone ever do a 5.1 sync for Empire Grindhouse? I know there was a DVD version floating around that was GOUT sync’d, but wasn’t the video on that release changed to match the audio? I’m looking for audio that can sync up with the video portion.

I’m in the process of preparing my whole collection for Plex, and have come to the Bond films. I started at Craig and working my way back. I haven’t really watched the Brosnan discs until I started checking the rips I made. Wow, they aren’t nearly as good as they should be. Goldeneye is a mess, and I very much prefer the LaserDisc.
Anyone up for some audio syncing from LaserDisc, DVD, or the theatrical DTS discs? Are there any HDTV broadcasts out there that are better?
The Brosnan films were all so great (yes, even Die Another Day) and deserve preservation. Oh, and let’s drop the MGM/UA logo from Goldeneye and add the mid 90s UA logo back as it should be!
Just got the 4K edition, but haven’t done my own comparisons. Ripping it now so I can line both up side by side.
Does anyone know if the LPCM track syncs with the 4K version? Also, if anyone is in Chicago next month, the Music Box has booked the film as part of their 70mm festival, and it’s 6-track mag. I’m going to be unable to make it, but if anyone is nearby, do check it out! From every person familiar with the 70 prints that I have spoken to, the image is not too hot and has golf ball sized grain. The mag track is lovely by all accounts though.

Thanks Harmy. Watching it on a 10 foot screen via DLP. Can’t wait to see the high bitrate, fully color corrected version. The 35mm scenes really do show promise for upping the quality of this project.
It was a private collector’s print in a private screening room with several other enthusiasts.
Got a chance this past year to see a special screening of T2 in 70mm mag. The sound on it was a revelation. Content wise, definitely the same as the AC3 LaserDisc/DVD. It’s really hard to describe the quality because mag just sounds so unique. I have personally never heard the movie sound that good. I think if you have a good sound system and do some good tweaking, you can get those two home mixes sounding pretty darn close to the mag.
As for image, the THX LaserDisc was pretty faithful to the look of the print to my eyes color wise, but the digital enhancement and grain reduction was something I always felt ruined T2 at home. Seeing a print confirmed this to me. The Blu-ray, in all its iterations, is a joke.
I had a unique chance to see a 70mm magnetic print this past year. To my eyes, the image looked a lot like the THX laserdisc in terms of color to my eyes, but it was free of any digital enhancement and grain reduction. It looked like a 1990s film, which is to say, great.
The magnetic sound mix was a revelation. I’ve never heard the movie sound so good. The AC3 LaserDisc/DVD is a pretty good representation of that, but there is such a unique quality to mag that it’s really impossible to compare the two.
Either way, it definitely proved to me that the Blu-ray, in any iteration, is a joke.
I'm curious to see how the MKV looks projected too. My stuff is in storage as I am in the middle of a move so my only reference is an iMac. I have a feeling it's going to look even more marvelous projected, as it should.
Here's a crude screen grab from my Mac, with the 3D Blu-ray on top, the 4K scan mkv on the bottom. I wouldn't call the colors muted...just different. The DNR is horribly apparent now.

There does seem to be some loss in the shadows on the scan, but again, this could have been artistic. It's hard to really know because it's possible the release prints weren't right either in this regard. Really brings up that old debate of how was a film suppose to look: like the OCN or the release print?
Either way, love this scan. I don't even mind the minor damage throughout, but I'd be ok seeing it cleaned up. Just don't scrub that beautiful grain!!!

Would anyone be interested in Mission: Impossible? I'd love to get that sync'd to the Blu-ray, so long as it was of the same quality as the LaserDisc AC3 track! I may be able to track down a set of discs.

I'm very curious to compare the TrueHD tracks to the DTS-6 tracks.
I projected only Batman Begins sadly, but all all three on film. The latter two, on 15/70 as well! The DTS-6 track on Begins was excellent.
That is indeed the one. The source for my project was a quicktime file that was roughly DVD quality but compressed pretty poorly. The source of that quicktime file was a VHS tape.
If you have a DVD source that may look much much better.

Been wanting to do this for awhile. It’s not perfect, but it will suffice until someone can scan a 35mm version.
I pieced this together from a Quicktime trailer I found lurking in the bowels of the net. It was originally sourced from a VHS. The audio was naturally terrible, so I tracked down the DTS cinema audio on a trailer disc and sync’d to the trailer.
While it’s not perfect, it’s the closest I’ve seen anyone come to recreating this wonderful trailer with the original music intact.
