Best Performance by an Actor/Actress in the Star Wars Movies
Time

Personally I think that Mark Hamill is superb in all the original films and doesn’t get enough credit for his acting, from naive farm boy in Star Wars, to a Jedi student in Empire finding out Vader is his father on Cloud City, then to mature Jedi Knight in ROTJ. The dual between Vader and Luke on the 2nd Death Star is easily the best light sabre dual in all of the Star Wars movies, not because of the choreography but because of the rage in Luke.

Han - Solo Movie ** Spoilers **
Time

Just back from a surprisingly poorly attended showing here in the UK. Overall really enjoyed it, the second half of the movie is probably where it really hits it’s stride. Alden Ehrenreich does an excellent job with the nearly impossible task of following following Harrison Ford, there are a number of times he completely captures the personality of Han with feeling like he is trying to be Harrison Ford. Donald Glover is almost perfect as Lando. The plot is pitched just right with enough action to keep you interested but is a small enough story to not make Han’s, Chewie’s and Lando’s adventures in the existing films feel underwhelming in retrospect. Quite a few folks have wondered how the pristine Falcon was going to end up in the state we see it in the OT and it is answered sensibly and believably.

On the negative side I think this probably has the weakest musical score of the movies so far. The soundtrack seems almost invisible at times and doesn’t seem to drive your emotions in line with the scene in the same way Williams does, which is a bit of a shame. Maybe after a second viewing I’ll change my mind.

The cameo of a certain prequel character actually works quite well and I didn’t really get the normal “it’s a small universe after all” feeling that these things can sometimes create.

There is a nice “han shot first” nod as well, and this could nicely tees up potential sequels if it makes enough money for Disney’s liking.

After a first viewing 7/10.

4K77 - Released
Time

Downloaded this last night (1080p version) and had a quick scan through it this morning, it looks fantastic, will try and get a chance to watch it fully this evening, love the grain. I wasn’t too fussed about seeing the DNR’d version but looking at the sample screenshots in this thread it looks like it’s going to be great too. A technicolor version of this would be awesome too. How many versions of a film can you have 😃 To all those involved fantasic work!

The Last Jedi: Official Review and Opinions Thread ** SPOILERS **
Time

DrDre said:

Scarriest thing, really?!!! Scarrier than facing Darth Vader, the man who murdered your father and your mentor?

Apparently so according to Luke himself:

“I’ve seen this raw strength only once before. It didn’t scare me enough then. It does now.”

In that dialog he is talking about Ben, so I guess he sees the potential in Ben to be even worse that Darth Vader or the Emperor

Episode VIII : The Last Jedi - Discussion * SPOILER THREAD *
Time

OK so I saw the movie with my 11 year old son this morning. As always after a new Star Wars movie I need to let it percolate before deciding how much I like or dislike it. However at this point I think I really like this one. There are only two things that annoy me about this movie 1) The Mary Poppins Leia in space which is just ridiculous looking and 2) Luke doesn’t get off the island and join the adventure. I would have loved to have seen Luke rediscover his old self earlier and getting off Ach-To and going on a mission rather like Obi Wan does in ANH or Luke himself does at Jabbas palace in ROTJ.

There are a couple of bits that I think have been harshly criticized in some of the reviews so far, the Porgs, they are hardly in the movie and not in any meaningful way and I actually think the Yoda scene is pretty good we get the original Yoda personality back from Empire, not boring Yoda from the Prequels and while not exactly matching Yoda from Empire appearance wise I actually think it’s the closest yet.

I guess most importantly my son loved it and was straight out with the Star Wars lego when we got home.

Plus we should get force ghost Luke in episode 9!

Han - Solo Movie ** Spoilers **

So as part of “researching” this movie and Alden Ehrenreich. I have watched both Beautiful Creatures and Hail Caesar and Ehrenreich is actually a pretty good actor. I was firmly in the Anthony Ingruber camp before they cast and must admit was a bit disappointed when they didn’t cast him.
He is a much better physical match for Ford than Ehrenreich who reminds me far more of Tom Hanks than Harrison Ford. My only real concern about Ingruber is that his performance would have turned into a 90 minute impression of Harrison Ford, but a decent director should be able to avoid that, “Would that it were so simple!”.
Anyway my concerns about Ehrenreich have been considerably reduced since watching these two movies, I still think my “suspension of disbelief” would have been greater with Ingruber.

I also think that John Powell’s scores so far have been pretty good, and the recent “leaked” photos have also helped alleviate my fears of a disaster. Woody Harrelsons character looks pretty awesome. Maybe this will turn out to be cool after all!
