Just back from a surprisingly poorly attended showing here in the UK. Overall really enjoyed it, the second half of the movie is probably where it really hits it’s stride. Alden Ehrenreich does an excellent job with the nearly impossible task of following following Harrison Ford, there are a number of times he completely captures the personality of Han with feeling like he is trying to be Harrison Ford. Donald Glover is almost perfect as Lando. The plot is pitched just right with enough action to keep you interested but is a small enough story to not make Han’s, Chewie’s and Lando’s adventures in the existing films feel underwhelming in retrospect. Quite a few folks have wondered how the pristine Falcon was going to end up in the state we see it in the OT and it is answered sensibly and believably.
On the negative side I think this probably has the weakest musical score of the movies so far. The soundtrack seems almost invisible at times and doesn’t seem to drive your emotions in line with the scene in the same way Williams does, which is a bit of a shame. Maybe after a second viewing I’ll change my mind.
The cameo of a certain prequel character actually works quite well and I didn’t really get the normal “it’s a small universe after all” feeling that these things can sometimes create.
There is a nice “han shot first” nod as well, and this could nicely tees up potential sequels if it makes enough money for Disney’s liking.
After a first viewing 7/10.
