Info Wanted: "The Mask" Workprint Composite? has anyone done / made this?

I've only watched the workprint once, but if I recall, it had alternate takes with the same dialogue. If I'm right, that would mean the editor taking on this project would have to take a little liberties and decide which one he/she likes better, hehe.

Also, a double set of this along with the tv footage put back into Ace Ventura would be the tits.

There were definitely alternate takes used. I'd say use the workprint audio throughout except with the DVD deleted scenes (which are workprint excerpts) and when the audio is identical to the theatrical cut. There are also bits missing from the workprint, like the entire Ben Stein scene. I personally would include that and every other bit missing for completions sake, but other than that I would base this edit wholly from the workprint, making it a reconstruction of sorts.

I saw a while ago somebody was going to make an edit of "Ace Ventura: Pet Detective" using HD 16:9 television footage and I've yet to see anything come of it. I've personally always wanted to see a Jim Carrey Blu-Ray set with his three 1994 hits along with their respective alternate versions. "Ace Ventura: Pet Detective" would have the theatrical cut and the television version (or a new extended cut using the television footage), "The Mask" would have the theatrical version and the workprint (or a new extended cut using the workprint footage), and "Dumb & Dumber" would have the theatrical cut (which has never been released on Blu-Ray and is now out of print on DVD) and the unrated cut (the only version you can get on Blu-Ray).

Has anybody ever made a workprint composite of “The Mask”? If not, that should definitely happen.

For those of you unfamilar with the workprint version of “The Mask”: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s5JCC7EIVmI

Since the workprint is in 4:3, a fullscreen version of the theatrical cut should be sourced. Another vital source is the two deleted scenes (which are in essence workprint excerpts) from the DVD/Blu-Ray which are in 16:9, I don’t know if they should be cropped to 4:3 or matted over the workprint footage. There are apparently a few other usable sources as well. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UG0Y4C-QOu8

The audio should be mostly sourced from the workprint, using bits from the theatrical where it’s identical and using the audio from the DVD deleted scenes where applicable.

I know the first DVD of “The Mask” was a flipper disc with the film in 16:9 on one side and 4:3 on the other (though I don’t know if it was an open matte transfer or pan-and-scan). I personally would source the original VHS for the theatrical cut, as the transition between the VHS workprint and the VHS theatrical cut would probably be smoother than with the DVD. That, and the material from the VHS just deserves to be preserved IMHO. It might just be because I grew up on that videotape, but I just find it classic. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2P9oObQy3Ks
The opening commercials on the tape and the “Space Ghost: Coast To Coast” episode after the movie should both be included as bonus material. In a perfect world, THAT would be the perfect workprint composite disc for “The Mask”.

If it's not one thing, it's another. The sync is ok but the latest authoring didn't include the Godfather 3 alternate opening. I have to try and re-do AGAIN today.

I can't WAIT until this is over. :) lol
And i hope you all enjoy it. lol

I spent the day yesterday with my best friend and saw Prometheus.

without giving anything away how was it?

For those of you interested, it seems like this version of the saga is not the same as the one aired i 1977. It's missing about 5 minutes and it's a combination of the saga and the trilogy version.

I found a good page illuminating the different versions, and this was said about the 2012 AMC version:

To celebrate the 40th anniversary of The Godfather films, AMC airs their version of The Saga. The AMC Cut is notable for being the first time any of the chronological edits have appeared in a widescreen format. It was also broadcast in HD, another first.

In 2008, while sourcing footage for the Coppola Restoration, Dreamworks came across a pristine copy of the original 1977 NBC print for The Godfather Saga. This was then matted to a widescreen ratio and the footage was synched up with the 2.0 Stereo mix from The Trilogy². (For scenes that were in the Saga but not the Trilogy², the soundtrack reverts back to its original mono). Some of the scenes that were unique to the Trilogy² were also flown in for this cut.

While this cut, on the surface, appears to be the ultimate merging of The Saga and The Trilogy, it suffers from several minor trims and lifts throughout. A line of dialogue here, a minor scene there, etc, all add up to make a cut that is almost five minutes shorter than the original Saga, despite having the extra scenes from The Trilogy²! Some of the scenes that were exclusive to the original airing of The Saga are missing, like Michael asking Santino Jr. how his book is coming along.

Overall, it was great to finally see (most) of the original Saga in a cleaner format, but thankfully we held on to our 35 year old Betamax recording of the initial airing.

Read more about it here:

thanks for this link it was a very interesting read, never knew there was EVEN MORE than what the saga, epic, or trilogy had to offer.

At this point, I'm not sure if I should include the John Cazale documentary or some other stuff that I have. I have an E! documentary celebrating the 25th anniversary and some Entertainment Tonight news reports. I think I might have to include that instead of the Cazale thing.

It's one or the other. Unfortunately, I can't include both. :(

definitely include the television opening of GF3 though

Badboy...what are you referring to? I'm not doing anything with an mkv.

all the files i've gotten are in mkv, figured they were the same for you. i wanted to convert them into DVD5 but i don't know how.

Absolutely not. Mine are TS. They are full HD.

I assume you downloaded the 720p files?? How many did you get?

4 mkv files, one for each program. The first three are about 3 gb each and the fourth is almost 5 gb. You still need program 3?

@digitalfreaknyc you have any luck downloading that torrent? I'm still stuck at 1.68GB

I'm not a member of that group so I can't download it.

All I would need is the 3rd piece. I'd upconvert that segment from 720p to 1080i and we'd be done. *sigh*

you can register, i was able to do it easily all it took was an email activation. i can give u my login info if u can't register.

downloading a torrent from a weird website, its 16 gb and it's frozen at 1.6, so i'd prefer to see this version in even better quality, especially with the rare godfather 3 opening.

Are you serious??? Where's the website? I'd love to be able to patch that one piece!!

Star Wars (1977) Extended Edition...with Blu-Ray on the way
Time

The teaser trailer for the Star Wars deleted scenes that will be included in the Blu-Ray release really caught my attention. I thought to myself, this will hopefully give fan editors an opportunity to recut the original film with the deleted scenes put back in.

When I watched Deleted Magic, this was the first time I'd ever seen any of the deleted footage from the original movie. I was captivated about what could have been, and basically viewed it as a representation of the extended film.

Now that we'll have the footage in its entirety and best quality available, I'm really looking forward to somebody taking on the task of splicing the scenes back in.

How I'd see the best possible cut is by using the Blu-Ray version of the movie but cutting inbetween Lucas's CGI edits with the original theatrical cut in the highest quality it's available in. Then I would cut in all deleted footage we know about, as well as whatever new footage they provide. However, I would leave out Han kissing the girl in the Cantina scene and recut the Obi-Wan intro scene to its original order.
