Star Wars coming to Blu Ray (UPDATE: August 30 2011, No! NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!)

I sort of understand that cthulhu1138.

I'm a gamer too, so HD has been the norm for me since 2005. I just can't imagine going without it for so long. I wouldn't be able to do like you are. Supposedly super-hd will arrive around 2020-2025.

That seems like a long wait even when I've been all HD for 6 years now.

It strikes me as strange (even completely ironic) that there are people in here that don't care for Blu-ray. This seems like a forum where everyone is FOR movie preservation and the "best quality" in film. I've been for both for years.

I wouldn't be surprised if this were the general public, but this a film forum. Isn't it?! I bought my first HDTV at 22 in 2005. I recently bought one of the new 46" 1080p Aquos that has a higher contrast ratio than a freak'n plasma. The difference between Blu-ray and DVD on it is night and day. It's not even close.

When it comes to audio, I'm surprised by any real film fan that doesn't have at least 5.1 in their home. I bought my first 5.1 system when I was 18 and working at a tshirt company for $7 an hour.

Anyway, some people here don't strike me as film fans....maybe just hypothetical film fans? I hope that doesn't sound unkind, but I'm NOWHERE NEAR well to do, and those things are a staple in my home. Again, general public no....film forum...I kind of expected it.

I can certainly be wrong though. Heck I saw a "film buff" refer to natural grain in a fifty year old film on Blu-ray as ugly. I thought it was gorgeous. All the detail down to fabric fibers were there and the film grain was a natural part of that movie.

The jump in quality is less significant for dvd to blu than it was vhs to dvd. I know plenty of people, young AND old, who claim they can't see the difference at all. ..

Totally and COMPLETELY FALSE on the resolution jump. Also the people that say that are either watching Blu-ray on an SD TV or they're BLIND.

VHS = 480x333

SVHS = 560x420

DVD = 720x576 or 720x480 (barely a step up from VHS res in comparison)

Blu-Ray = 1920x1080

I know that isn't a fancy technical response, but I find the "Blu-ray isn't great" comments ridiculous.

So does anyone have a used copy of the blu-rays I can buy? Lol. Also, I find it strange that there are people here who DON'T have Blu-ray players. My broke tail has had a standalone player for years. I refuse to buy the DVD version of anything...and have refused for years now. DVDs just look awful on my Aquos next to the same BR disc.

I canceled my Amazon Pre-order. I'm a bit sad about it, but I guess it's for the best. I haven't watched A SINGLE STAR WARS MOVIE IN OVER A YEAR AND A HALF in anticipation of this. I haven't watched any of the HD TV broadcasts either...not even 30 seconds of one. Could someone please link me to where I need to go to pick up HD "fan edits". Is there a true 1080i/p copy of all the movies?? :(

Hey Adywan, have you tried your hand at test color corrections on any of these Blu shots yet?

Obviously there's going to be compression artifacts, but I'm wondering if Vader's saber can go back to red without fudging up the rest of the picture.

Actually i was just doing a quick test. Now all i did here was adjust the hue for Magenta.

Now why couldn't Lucasfilm do something as simple as this?

I have also downloaded the HD version of the trailer and it does indeed look bad for the older docs as the reported problem does seem to exist in the two shots shown, while the rest of the trailer doesn't suffer with these problems. Well all apart from the shot of R2 and the wampa that definitely has some field problems

wow how long did that take you,the lightsaber is red yes.the pic's at the bottom looks bad

How much did the Magenta tweak change everything? Have you applied it to other media? If so, I'm a bit happy...as my Aquos has color and image setting options 10,000 miles long. I could easily make a custom setting for the Blu-rays that mirrors that result.

Not saying this makes me happy buying this altered version, but it does give me hope that I may have control over at LEAST one thing. :-/

DO YOU PEOPLE KNOW HOW LONG IT TOOK MENTO READ 183 pages!!!! In the field....at work....on an iPhone 8-@ I HATE YOU ALL! (lol, jk) After my first post here on July 25th I decided to go back and read every page. I learned a number of things; 1. (EDIT)I've decided to change my #1 that was about Ken. I think we should take it easy on him after I looked around and into his posts and profiles on other sites. I don't think his repetition and reactions are necessarily on purpose...not sure really. I'll leave it at that** 2. This entire thread has been one heck of a Humdinger 3. I'm not sure how Ady doesn't jump off a cliff after some people's posts 4. I'm buying the set...for the audio...and deleted scenes. (and to watch it with my 4 year old). I got rid of my '04 DVDs and don't have a tape player for my VHS copies anymore. At least I'll enjoy my time with my little one. 5. Some people here are too serious. 6. Some aren't serious enough. 7. I'll download Ady's future release for my personal enjoyment 8. I wish I were color blind (lol) 9. I love Star Wars 10. I hate Jar Jar

First I would like to say, Awesome Site! :)

Now for my first post, hope I'm not attacked for it, LOL.

comparison

Looking at these four images I have to say that I think, even if it's the 2004 source, that they have definitely altered/tweaked/messed with the copy quite a bit for the blu-ray release.

Vader's lightsaber is MUCH different in the direct capture for the blu-ray than in either the 2004 or the Original Version.

The Original Version has a fat blade with a red/orange tint to it while the 2004 version is a fat PINK blade. The blu-ray versions is a MUCH thinner blade that has clearly been altered and appears to have a "redder" tint to it than the '04 version.

I'm still drooling over my pre-order that I have, but I understand a lot of the angst. I see this being an HD version of the 2004 set, with some tweaks to try and make it "somewhat" look like it SHOULD HAVE.

:)

PS I also noticed the "blu-ray preview" video makes it look much more pink than in the direct capture.
