That’s what it should’ve been, but it always was something of an official label. There’ve been self-described dark Jedi, and most sources capitalize the “D” in “dark”.

I prefer “fallen Jedi” as a term for Jedi who went bad.

That sounds a little better, but doesn’t that communicate more-or-less the same idea though? Plus I don’t see why a darksider would destcribe him-/herself as being “fallen”. “Dark” is at least a term such a character might use with some pride, and it is descriptevely accurate, albeit kinda odd.

Maybe it’s a slang that became commonplace, post Palpatine’s purge of Jedi history? (It’s a decent head-canon at the very least.)

Well, Dark Jedi aren’t Sith, and “Jedi” is a pretty vague term that for most people in the SW universe (post ROTS) just refers to Force users, so adding “dark” isn’t that weird. I always got the impression that it was more of an colloquialism as opposed to an official label. And none of the post-ROTJ darkside-users qualified as being part of the Sith order.

I can understand what you mean , art is subjective and people like different things about it . I recently came across this video and now have some mixed feelings about Howard Chaykin , he has some good points about some things but to me they get a bit drowned out by the attitude he has toward Star Wars fans . I understand he is miffed about royalties he missed out on , but if I ever become an established creator , I hope I will never be like this guy is to his fans…https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y-cvoqg9wzg

I’ll check that video out later when I have some time. As for his attitude, as I’ve seen in other videos, all I can say is that people respond very differently to fans. It’s probably weird to him to have so many people ask him about this one series he did forty years ago while the rest of his work gets less attention.

However, do you know if there’s any videos like that with Walt Simonson or Chris Claremont? Like I mentioned earlier I’m very curious about SW #53-54 with the recycled John Carter art (and those weird giant stormtroopers).

I have seen some of the art for that Solomon Kane comic and it looks pretty good , I read an article somewhere a few years back saying that Chaykin was working on that Solomon Kane project at the same time as the Star Wars adaptation and that he was more enamored with it than Star Wars and that he basically phoned in his first isue of Star Wars . Chaykin himself has said that he felt his work was not very good on the adaptation of Star Wars

That’s kinda funny. I’ve always preferred the art from the first issue over the rest. Sure, it can be a bit rough at times, but I like the overall aesthetic. It’s very “70’s” to me, if that makes any sense?

Mara Jade infiltrating Jabba’s Palace to kill Luke.
The whole point of ESB and ROTJ is that Vader and the Emperor want to turn Luke to the dark side.

That’s an interesting point that’s never occurred to me before. However, was her mission to specifically kill Luke though? I checked Wookieepedia and it never states that she was sent to kill him. The whole thing about Palpatine telepathically ordering her to kill Luke happened as he was falling to his death, or at least at some point during or after Vader’s betrayal. Though either way it does raise a question about what exactly her purpose at Jabbas palace was.

So I just finished reading “The Last Gift from Alderaan” & “Starfire Rising” for the first time, and I’m quite confused by the sudden appearance of giant stormtroopers. Now I’m well aware of the fact that this story was originally a John Carter story, hence the unusual (for SW) designs, but what’s up with the big stormtroopers? I’ve only read the Norwegian translation of the comic, so maybe some explanation was skipped in the translation? The only time it’s even acknowledged by any of the characters is in this panel.

Does anyone know what big Barsoom characters were turned into the giant stormtroopers? (I couldn’t even find an EU explanation/retcon on Wookieepedia.)

(The funny thing about this cover is that I’ve had this issue for quite a while, and I only recently realized that the Stormtrooper is huge compared to Leia.

Just as a side note, since the work of (and based on) Robert E. Howard has been discussed a lot recently (and screams in the void mentioned Savage Sword of Conan earlier), I was wondering if the Solomon Kane comic from the 70’s by Roy Thomas and Howard Chaykin is something that you’d recommend.

Just looking at the first few pages on ComiXology it reminds me a lot of the first issue of SW with the “pure” Chaykin art.

I really like what I’ve seen of Tony DeZuniga’s SW art (I even recoloured one here), but this one is kinda weird. Chewie looks like a giant Ewok with pointy ears. I’ve also never seen Han with the Indy satchel before. It reminds me a lot of those weird early European posters for ANH were they were trying to figure out what exactly SW was supposed to be. For some reason Chewie always seemed to suffer the most from those interpretations.

Do you know if he specifically asked for Roy Thomas as well? If so that’d be quite ironic as he eventually asked for him to be removed from the series after the Eight for Aduba-3 story-line. (At least that how I’ve been told that it played out.)

Just came across this video of Roy Thomas , Howard Chaykin and Charles Lippincot at a Panel and it seems I had a few of my facts mixed up…https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fRLF9TiyzWE

That was really fascinating. Thanks for sharing that. I’m normally to lazy to scour through long convention panel videos.

I also think it’s funny how Chaykin chastises modern comic artist for padding their stories. He might come off as a little harsh at times, but I completely agree with him. Back in the 70’s comic artists really did know how to efficiently tell a story, unlike today. Some still do, but most stories just drags on and on.

oops …sorry it was IronWolf …Cody came later…http://beachbumcomics.blogspot.com/2014/12/there-shall-come-hero-howard-chaykins.html

According to the panel it was Starbuck that inspired Lucas to ask for Chaykin, plus it debuted in 1974. Of course IronWolf could have been a part of it as well.

I’m also starting to see where Amaiza’s wacky design might have come from; http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-y8Hp0Agzo8s/VIiepWekLiI/AAAAAAAANr4/JuaBp1BBp0k/s1600/ironwolf-05.jpg

I know what you mean , as the Conan look of the Star Wars comic and the Tom Jung poster were heavily influenced by the work of Frazetta , who George Lucas was a huge fan of as well as a friend of George Lucas named John Millius who went on to direct the 1982 Conan The Barbarian . Lucas also owned a comic book shop called Super Snipe in the late 70s and was an avid fan of Comic art and at one time , almost did the Conan movie , it is mentioned in this video …https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_pmf3_FXM-M

Wow, I didn’t know Lucas actually owned a comic shop.

Makes sense he’d be a fan of comics though, after all early versions of Han had him looking like DC’s Swamp Thing. From what I’ve gathered, the earliest draft of SW had several placeholder images to illustrate what he had in mind, such as a cut-out of Swamp Thing. And the cover of the second draft had a generic John Carter-type image which was very similar to the final Jung and Hildebrandt posters.

also worth mentioning is that the first writer of the original Marvel Star Wars , Roy Thomas , was best known as the writer of Conan Comics and petitioned George Lucas to green light the comic and convinced Stan Lee to take it on . I am also a huge Conan fan , almost as much a fan of it as Star Wars . And Roy Thomas’ writing helped shape my vocabulary as a kid

For some reason I always thought it was Howard Chaykin who talked Stan Lee into producing the SW adaptation. Even though I’ve had various version of the ANH adaptation since I was a kid, it’s always slipped past me that Chaykin only drew it. Weird.

And it’s too bad Lucas stopped making non-SW films. I’d love to see what an 80’s Conan movie by George Lucas had looked like.

pretty cool though , I am also a big fan of Dezungia’s work on Savage Sword Of Conan and this illustration is well suited to his style and reminiscent of the Tom Jung movie poster as well. Only suggestion I would make is to use the same color palette for Han and Luke’s skin tones as you did for Leia. Looks really nice overall though.

I might have to check out Savage Sword of Conan now.

Also, now that you mentioned Conan, it occurred too me Luke was often depicted as being very Conan-esque during the first few years of SW. The most obvious example from Marvel being the cover-icon that they used prior to ESB. I always thought it looked more like Conan dressed up as Luke than the actual Luke from the movies. (Of course I wouldn’t have it any other way.)

One of the many things that fascinate me about the original Marvel SW comics (and early SW-stuff in general) is that they were made in a time when stuff like Conan and John Carter of Mars was still relevant, or at least part of recent memory, so it had a huge influence on people’s early interpretations of what SW was supposed to be. It may seem weird to some people nowadays, but back then it made perfect sense that they’d hire an artist that had worked on Conan to do SW-stuff. Today SW is so well known that there really is no need for interpretations or comparisons to other things. To most people that are my age or younger, SW is just SW, and it’s always been that way.

Does anyone know what “Star Wars Special Edition” is being referred to in this letters-page from Star Wars Weekly #10 in 1978?

I have a treasury sized issue that says something like that on the cover. It collects the whole back half of the adaptation. It’s a US book, though, so it could be something else.

Maybe the UK had something similar? Plus it’s not impossible that he got a hold of the US “special edition”.

That looks awesome ! It is much more vibrant and the colors “pop” more. Looking forward to seeing 25 as well as your upcoming creations.

Thanks.

I actually got a bit carried away and immediately started working on another DeZuniga poster. I’m not too sure about this one though, the colours are all over the place, but it ended up being good practice. https://imgur.com/p6zJLYh

very cool ! I like how you got Ben’s saber the correct color and the more subdued tones on the aliens …I think if you add in a little more reflected light, as from the overhead apparatus ,onto the figures , as well as some suggesting of more shadows it would be perfect .

Yeah, I figured the same thing and added some proper shading to the aliens on the left. I find adding reflected light hard to do so I only added it to Chalmun (I guess that’s who it’s supposed to represent), but I figured the aliens looked fine the way they were (maybe I’ll try changing that later).

I also had to adjust the contrast so that all the shadows were properly black. It looked a little weird in the first version as you could see colour smudges all over the muted shadows (it actually reminded me of how old comics used to look). The contrast altered the line art a tiny bit and made the bright areas a little “grainier”, but overall I think it works pretty well.

I had the same idea and I’ve already started to google clean Infantino art. I might add the Classic Star Wars logo to them just for fun.

I’ll post links to it whenever I get around to it.
(I also have to finished that text-less version of issue #25 that I said I was going to do a few weeks ago.)

That was a really cool post of the cantina scene ZkinandBonez , in the U.S. it was used as the cover of F.O.O.M. (friends of old Marvel ) magazine , I have never seen it sans color though , thanks for posting . Here is the image in color …click on the pic to see full image…https://comicbookrealm.com/series/772/9926/marvel-foom-friends-of-ol-marvel-issue-21

I on the other hand have never seen it in colour before. I do like the weird 70’s colours that Marvel used to have, red lightsabers and all.

But since the pin-up version had almost all of the art intact, I figured it’d be fun to recolour it similarly to what Dark Horse did in the Classic Star Wars series or the “Special Editions” of the movie adaptations.

This is just the first version. I might change some of the colours on both Chewie and the alien at the bottom right to make everything even less retro-looking. Plus, I’m probably going to notice some mistakes after a while. (Feedback would be appreciated.)

It’s also interesting to see that the FOOM version is different from the SWW pin-up. The most obvious change being that Han is much closer to Ben in the pin-up version.

I think we just have to get used to the fact that movie-franchises are made differently now. They are part of larger continuities, and SW in particular now has a commitment to a larger expanded universe. Lucas may not have cared (though even the PT had EU connections), now however, the EU and the movies are strongly connected. RO tried a milder version of it with Saw, and now Solo has fully committed to it. I think Lucasfilm knows that they can’t do exactly what the MCU does (e.g. making three or so movies a year), so they’ve committed to EU connections instead.

And if this whole Maul thing bugs too many people they can always “fix” it by making him a larger part of a future anthology films. Yes there’s no official plans for it right now, but they’ve opened that door now. I don’t see this becoming a huge problem, especially with younger audiences (it’s easy to forget that the post PT generation(s) actually likes Maul), but if it does they can still “salvage” it in many different ways. Like Silverwook said; Thanos wasn’t know by everyone watching the Avengers (or GOTG, etc.), yet it eventually paid off and those who hadn’t read the comics accepted it. Lucasfilm can still do a similar thing.

I was 13 when TPM was released, and liked Maul plenty. The problem is the retconned survival for the purposes of character recognition. Since Maul was killed (for real?) in Rebels yet again at the hand of Obi-wan, there was no reason to bring him back at all.

Now we are told to care about a character retconned back into existence by a children’s TV show who is destined to die in a pointless attempt at vengeance in another children’s TV show. It may come across that I’m annoyed by this decision by Disney, but that would imply some sort of emotional investment in Maul’s story.

People keep comparing this to Marvel and comics in general, when Star Wars isn’t the same sort of story. At its most pulpy it’s a serialized space adventure, but the original film has more in common with Kurosawa than with Stan Lee.

Yeah, but Lucas aren’t making the films anymore. He’s essentially handed the franchise over to the EU writers, and they are now making EU-movies in addition to the books and comics.

That’s what I’m trying to say, it’s simply a different kind of franchise now.

I get that. I’m just saying that nowadays they expect you to; either know Maul is alive in advance, be motivated to go watch the cartoons, simply google it, or just wait and see what potentially happens in the following movies.

Love it or hate it, that’s just how movie franchises work now, they follow comic-rules.

And that’s why I don’t enjoy modern comics.

Modern? They’ve always been like that.

A DC comic from f.ex. the late 70’s wouldn’t have any qualms about suddenly reintroducing some random villain from the 50’s and just expect you to accept it. And Marvel does this all the time. A story I read recently from the early 90’s made a bunch of references to a story from the early 60’s. And there was no wikipedia back then.
