The Phantom Menace - Theatrical version scanned in 4K (a WIP)
Time

Based on the test reel in 720p, it is by far better than the HDTV broadcast :

  • no Edge Enhancement
  • no exagerate cropping
  • no awful colors.

It seems to be more detailed than the HDTV, but it is difficult to compare a new rough scan with an old artificially sharpened one.

It is obviously a little bit less detailed than the Blu-Ray (which was scanned from the original negative, not from a theatrical 35 mm), but IMHO, the image is more natural than the Blu-Ray: there is no DNR (so you don’t get Qui-Gon’s wax face as in the Blu-Ray, the grain is preserved)… and the original alien subtitles are there.

Today is probably the good date to officialy announce that a scan in 4K, based on a 35mm in very good condition, is currently in progress.
And it will be done twice 😃

I received a few days ago from the lab in Paris a first test scan of reel 4 (made with a simple 720p scan), just to analyze the average condition of the reel before scanning it with a brand new 4K scanner. The lab scanned the entire reel… in 25 fps (the French standard) so it is not currently usable (there are ghosting artefacts and interpolated frames). Damn French people, always thinking that the world needs their own standards!

But It looks just gorgeous, even in 25 fps: the reel is in PERFECT condition, it looks like it was never projected before, the colors are perfectly preserved. The lab made NO correction at all (white balance, DNR or something else) and the rough result is astonishingly good.

The 4K scan will be obviously done in 24 fps, can’t wait to get it 😊

Happy birthday to TPM!

Yes, and it is probably the good date to officialy announce that a scan in 4K, based on a 35mm in very good condition, is currently in progress.
And it will be done twice 😃

  • a first scan (in 4K) will be processed as soon as possibly by a Parisian lab, so that I can use it to finish my ongoing despecialized edition
  • then the reels will be shared with some people from OT (I don’t know if I can name them), and a second scan will be processed with the best available scanner.

(JEDIT: I’ll make a new post to discuss about the scan, and keep this post about the forthcoming despecialized edition)

Well this is certainly great news!

How have we gained access to the original negative?? If we do, then can someone for the love of Jaba get the OUT negs away from Lucasfilm.

It is obviously not the original negative, but a Kodak 2382 lowfade in very good condition.

Hi CarterStarkiller,

The project is going well. It will take longer than expected, because I have the chance to use a forthcoming 4K format scan of the original 35mm, so I think it’s worth waiting a little more than expected.
So no, it will not be done for the 20th anniversary of the TPM. But in the end, there will be a 4K scan of the entire movie…

More news coming soon.

Hi CarterStarkiller,

Thank you for your interest in this project. I’m still actively working on it (I found and scanned 35mm cells for each subtitle, so that I can now rotoscope those “original” subtitles instead of trying to make new ones).
The despecialization is almost done, I still have to regrade the colors.

Actually, those examples were made when I was working on a reconstruction made from HDTV sources (just like ChewieLewis), there was no BD in it.
Since then, I rebooted my project from scratch and I currently use BD as my main source (which is far less cropped than HDTV and ChewieLewis’ reconstruction).

And Blutopia is overly strict even for a private tracker. I’d be surprised if my account hasn’t been deactivated from disuse by now, honestly. You must seed uninterrupted for 14 days after snatching something, with very limited leeway for downtime, and VPN use is prohibited entirely? Come on, guys, I have one laptop that I take back and forth to and from work, and I can’t exactly seed from work, and certainly not without a VPN if I even wanted to risk it.

This.

Likely re-rendered for the 3D conversion. Or maybe they grabbed the wrong filmout file?

Yes, I thought the same thing.

But I’m not sure: the theatrical scene has more depth than the BR re-rendered scene. Furthermore, other scenes would have also deserved a new rendering for 3D (final battle in space, pod race) but yet they have not been re-rendered.

Anyway, you’re right: it would be great to have that released on bluray one day.

Interesting. Do you want to elaborate more on that?

Of course. Here is the exact same frame from the theatrical version (HDTV), compared to the Blu-Ray (at 00.09.56) : http://www.framecompare.com/image-compare/screenshotcomparison/1B01NNNU

I only stretched and warped the HDTV version to fit perfectly the BR.

As you can see, some ships are in the same place, some are not, some are added… Obviously, the entire scene was rerendered for the Blu-Ray (possibly for the same reason than adding a bridge near the Palace of Theed…).
