Basically, I took the L,R, LFE, LS & LR channels from the original 5.1 DTS mix, then downmixed my stereo edit to mono to replace the center track.

Nononono, you shouldn't have done that. Keep it in stereo. You'd have to redo the changes on the Center channel if you really want 5.1.

Yeah, I know, but I was trying to avoid having to do that... well maybe one day I'll do it properly, for now the stereo mix is good enough for me. It is after all, just for the kids.

Edit: Link removed.

I attempted to create a 5.1 Version (AC3, 526 MB) for Back to the Future.  Basically, I took the L,R, LFE, LS & LR channels from the original 5.1 DTS mix, then downmixed my stereo edit to mono to replace the center track. Then I used the 'Match Volume' feature in Adobe Audition to make sure it matched that of the original center track.

As zee944 points out below, taking shortcuts like this does not produce a quality 5.1 mix so I have removed the link. Use the Stereo mix instead.

For those of you just joining us, this is a profanity free - TV-Edit if you will - of the Back to the Future English Audio, sync'd to the Bluray. Nice if you have young children you want to show the film to but don't want them trying our phrases like "I'm gonna get that SOB" in the playground at school, but probably not of interest to anyone else...

For those of you with young kids, I made kid friendly audio tracks for Back to the Future 2 and Back to the Future 3. I also made a few changes to my original edit of the Back to the Future audio, removing the 'Bastards' and SOBs.

All 2.0 stereo AC3 448 kb/s.

Thanks. I've downloaded all three.

I checked out your initial version of BTTF1, and the substitutions were pretty seamless to my ears. Were you still considering making 5.1 versions?

Edit: I'm working on one now.

I did not edit out the SOBs, which I regretted when we watched it. I'll probably go back and do that. I might try to remove the Bastards as well since I heard my eight year old say "come on you bastards" this morning while playing with stuffed animals (!). They want to watch the second one tonight which I haven't had a chance to edit, so it will be back to loud, carefully timed coughs!

I Just figured out why I couldn't hear the voices in the 6 channel version: the voices were in the center channel and if I go (in adobe audition) to Edit > Preferences > Audio Channel Mapping I can see that the Left and Right Channels are mapped to my speakers, but the center channel, LFE, LS, RS, et. al. are not mapped at all. Mapping the center channel to my left speaker allows me to hear the voices. So perhaps I shall revisit this project again one day and fix it in the 5.1 mix.

Did Eac3To get the channels right when it converted from the DTS-HD? Shouldn't the main sound be in the L & R channels, not the center channel? Is there a command line option that would correct this (if indeed it is incorrect)?

Earlier in this thread there was some discussion about the edited for TV versions of Back to the Future. well, my kids (age 6 & 8) want to watch the first one tonight, so I made some quick edits to the audio track based on what I found here:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q2zLXaA1J_4

Marty's dialogue replacements sound like they could have been made by Mr J Fox himself so where possible I used the audio from the youtube clip, adjusting volume to match - well pretty closely. But the Doc's "When this baby hits 88 mph you're gonna see some serious STUFF" was so poorly dubbed that I chose to just turn the volume way down. It's far from perfect, but I think it will do.

If anyone else is interested they can download my edit. (369 MB)

Technical details: I started with the DTS-HD Audio track from the bluray, used EAC3To to convert it to .flac. I tried editing the 6 channel flac in Adobe Audition but couldn't hear any dialogue at all, just music and effects (any ideas?), The dialogue is there because when I converted it to Stereo I could hear it fine, so that is why this is a stereo track and not a 6 channel surround. I was very precise with my copying and pasting to ensure everything stayed in sync. I converted the final flac to a 448 kbps AC3.

My goal was only to cut out the swearing ("Dad, what's an asshole?") unlike ABC I didn't feel the need to edit out the Libyan terrorists, so the changes are pretty minor. Not seamless, but minor.

Changes:

00:21:07: ""When this baby hits 88 mph you're gonna see some serious ____"

00:22:24: "Jesus Christ! Jesus Christ, Doc, you disintegrated Einstein!" =>

"Geez Louise! Geez Louise, Doc, you ..."

00:29:00: "Holy Shit!"=> "Holy Jeez!"

00:31:08: "Holy Shit!" => "Holy!" (the shit replaced with music and effects from the 6 channel no dialog version I somehow created)

ABC left the "Let's see if these bastards can do 90" in so I did too...

01:07:29: "AAAAHHHHH!" instead of "SHIIIIIIIIITTTTTTT!" as Biff crashes into the Manure.

01:14:04: "yes, God dammit George, swear" => "yes, dammit George, swear"

01:51:17: "What do we become Jerks or something?" (taken from the dubbed for TV version of Back to the Future 2, since it was less clumsy than the "What do we become, like Jerks, or something?" in the dub of part 1.

And that's all. I ripped the bluray to an 9 GB MKV then I used MKV Merge to add this new track to the list. Since all I did was overwrite a few extremely short sections of audio it all syncs perfectly.

If anyone has a better version, please let me know!

EDIT:

I went back and removed the 3 'son-of-a-bitch' (now "son of a ____"), the 5 'bastard's and a couple (but not all) of the 'damn's for good measure. I also made similar edits for Back to the Future 2 and Back to the Future 3.

All 2.0 stereo AC3 448 kb/s.

I'd be interested in the Edited for TV audio if anybody was able to find it.

I guess I could make my own by inserting silence or a bleep over the swear words, but sometimes TV versions manage to keep the background sound as well which I might be able to do in adobe Audition if I play around, but I'm really not an audio guy.

sometimes of course TV edits insert "alternative" dialogue dubbed by someone who sounds nothing like the original actor, but any audio that makes these films closer to G rated would be good. I have watched them with the kids unedited and made loud throat clearing sounds where I knew there to be a "Holy S@#t" or "Do we turn in to A$$holes or something?" coming, but it's easy to miss them. Sooner or later they are going to pick up on some of the language.

I don't know about you, but I am experiencing very slow page loads on the blog site at the moment: This happens whenever a number of people are currently streaming and/or downloading HD video clips from the site. We do have "unlimited bandwidth" in the sense that we do not get charged extra for using 3 GB of Bandwidth in under an hour (current stats), but obviously only so many bytes can be streamed to so many users at one time. So if you are currently waiting for the page to load, or a video to start, or experience these issues in the future, please be patient or try back later...

The site is still up and has been all week. New content posts have slowed down a little recently, but it should pick up again soon. My goal is to have something new on the site at least every three days, but I don't always have something new to post.

If you still can't get to the site, try flushing your DNS entries. On Windows, open a command prompt and type "ipconfig /flushdns" and hit enter.

Looks brand new! Don't know how long the send space link will be good so I have posted it here:

http://www.thestarwarstrilogy.com/starwars/post/2012/10/25/Star-Wars-Holiday-Special-Boba-Fett-Cartoon.aspx

I have also converted it to an MP4 so you can watch it online.

I'm curious... isn't there a loss of resolution between the two? At least when I play back, the MP4 has a significantly smaller window than the original.

Yes there is, but right under the video is a link to Download the original DVD VOB files created by G-Force.

Help: looking for... 'The Living Daylights' - Workprint?
Time

I just stumbled across something called the James Bond Golden Jubilee project. It is available as a 31 GB torrent of rare James Bond related treasures, including The Living Daylights Workprint. Much of it can be downloaded separately from hotfiles, if you have the patience.

I am trying to get the whole project through bittorrent. The first 60% downloaded very quickly, but since then it has been crawling along... Been stuck @ about 78/79% all day.

I will post everything I think I can get away with on my James Bond site.
