TFA: Why I don't think Rey is a Merry Sue
Time

joefavs said:

Couldn’t it be that -GASP- the character is supposed to be more powerful than Luke? Everyone’s treating this like they failed to portray a character on roughly ANH-era Luke’s level believably, but since when is that the cap on Force aptitude in this universe? Maybe Rey just does better than Luke because she is better than Luke.

The problem is it makes her unrelatable. I didn’t connect with her character at all. She was too perfect, didn’t have any flaws, didn’t dream of wanting more, or something that could maybe connect us to her personality. She was just… weird.

Also, she is totally a Mary Sue. Someone who defeats everyone in her way, never has to be rescued, doesn’t appear to have any flaws, and so on.

Hi there, and welcome. V4 for Episodes 2 and 3 have been nearly finished for a while, and I’m just waiting on a few key resources. The biggest is Schorman’s V2 HDTV source material update, but I may forego this if I don’t hear anything after getting all the other bits and pieces ready; I’ve never noticed any issues at all with his V1 and am very happy with it. And they’ll have commentaries too.

Will we ever see proper Blu-ray artwork?

Thunderclap, I really wish you would do an Editor’s Commentary track that could be muxed into the film. I thoroughly enjoyed listening to L8wrtr’s but I strongly disagree with some of the editing choices he made to his Ep III.

I’ve watched Hal’s, Kerr’s, Seciors’, Phantom Editor’s, L8wrtr’s and Stankpac’s prequel edits. And I have to say yours always rises to the top for me. Sure, there are specific scenes I prefer elsewhere–such as how L8wrtr has Anakin competently and purposefully destroy the Droid Control Ship, and how Kerr (and specifically /only/ Kerr) has Palpatine reveal his true form. But everything else, everywhere else, I just can’t find a fully compatible prequel trilogy that can compete with yours.

I can’t go back to watching Padme die, and I can’t go back to a prequel Vader in the suit. I could maybe still tolerate there being a prophecy but it’s all the better for not having to.

I love the prequels now, thanks to you, and it makes me smile to know I’ve helped distribute your edits.

That’s true, most of the Despecialized Edition covers don’t have the numbers, but the ones I use do have the numbers, so I wanted them to streamline together.

http://shealambert.deviantart.com/art/Star-Wars-Blu-Ray-De-Specialized-Custom-Cover-552701262
http://shealambert.deviantart.com/art/The-Empire-Strikes-Back-Custom-Blu-Ray-Cover-552703565
http://shealambert.deviantart.com/art/Return-of-the-Jedi-Custom-Blu-Ray-Covers-552704159

The reason I changed the Episode III artwork on my cases is that, in your artwork, Yoda is holding a lightsaber. In Q2’s edits, Yoda never uses a lightsaber.

I took those covers you made and updated them a little more. Now they’re supposed to align with the Despecialized Edition covers that I’m using, which I found from Deviantart.

Should I make them with the logo on the front?

It’s still to small scale a bit like the Jedi crawl.

The first paragraph shouldn’t be about characters at all.
It should set the political scene and then the military stakes.
The lead players should be mentioned in the second paragraph
and then the third should lead into the first scene of the movie.

Thank you for this observation!

Here (please excuse the quality) is my mock attempt again. I also removed ALL CAP words since apparently only even numbered episode titles have that.

Again, just a mock test. Mainly, I was trying to setup a template for Star Wars crawls in After Effects, and it seems okay. Yes, the blue far, far away text is too big, will fix later.

Woah, damn, nice! Are you making your own edit and if so, are you using this for yours? If not, can I use it? If yes, can you make me one?

Let’s rewrite that bloated crawl!
From my thread in the Scriptwriting subforum:

EPISODE VII
THE FORCE AWAKENS

Luke Skywalker, the last Jedi, has vanished.
In his absence, the sinister FIRST ORDER
has risen from the ashes of the fallen Empire.

To counter this deadly threat, the Republic
mobilizes a covert RESISTANCE led by
General Leia Organa, to gather allies from
the farthest reaches of the galaxy.

As the FIRST ORDER prepares a crippling
blow to the Republic, its dark forces gather
above the graveyard planet of Jakku…

I like this crawl. Succinct but revealing more information.

Here is my go. Bear in mind, I’m attempting to reveal several more details, but keep it concise. I have a feeling it’s still too long, but take a look:

The democratic NEW REPUBLIC rules with a just hand. But from the ashes of the evil Galactic Empire, the FIRST ORDER has arisen, its strongholds hidden among the recesses of the Unknown Regions.

This new Order, determined to restore the glory of the Empire, have secretly poured resources into a new weapon of rerror: the Starkiller!

General Leia Organa leads a brave RESISTANCE to combat such evil. With little support from the Reupublic, Leia is desperate to find her missing brother Luke Skywalker. She has dispatched her most daring pilot on a secret mission to Jakku, where a group of Force worshipers may hold a clue to Master Skywalker’s whereabouts…

The advantages of this crawl include: a) greater distinction between the Republic and the Resistance, and make the situation appear more dire for the latter; b) allusions to the otherwise surprising DS3; c) explaining why the First Order is still a force to be reckoned with; d) containing most of the same info as the original crawl; e) perhaps explaining why Jakku holds any clues at all; f) its consistent with the background designed for the world building, but not revealed in the film itself.

The disadvantage is that to include so much information, it can make for some clunky wording and an overly long crawl. I’m interested to read others’ thoughts on the matter.

If someone is willing to render this crawl to perfectly match the movie, I’ll gladly include it in my edit. Also, I want a different name for the movie. Any ideas? The Force Awakens just reminds me too much of the title, A New Hope.

They did introduce new characters and there was no way they were making a sequel trilogy that omitted all the characters from the OT. Why even bother making an episode VII if it isn’t going to have any relation to the previous installments?

I don’t see how the story makes the OT unimportant. Did you think that there weren’t ever going to be any more bad guys in the universe after the Emperor died? Wasn’t the idea of some sort of an Imperial Remnant already thought of in the EU anyways? It seemed logical to me then and still does in TFA.

It didn’t require any of the original cast, in fact it would have been better without them in it to create more interest in the back stories of the ‘new’ characters all be it the Force strong characters had to be related but we didn’t need that spelling out in the first act. People who say it’s not a rehash of the OT are blind. The female version of Luke ‘Rey’, the Vader rip off ‘Ren’, palpatine clone ‘Snoke’ even an R2 rip off, BB8. Finn could even pass as a new Han? Bringing Chewie back (who seemingly hasn’t aged at all, they could have made his fur grey or something, anything) is purely to sell more bloody shit. Concentrate on depth of script/direction instead of Box Office takings and merchandise, which is why I assume the re-designed storm troopers? Rant off, I could go on for hours just how wrong this disappointing film was for an OT junky .

I didn’t mind them using some of the old cast, but the problem is how they used them. I personally didn’t like that Han Solo became a smuggler again. It ruins the ending of Return of the Jedi. Makes it seem like it was all for nothing.

What new boundaries would you have liked to have seen broken by TFA?

I’m not a good fanfiction writer or anything along those lines, but I wanted something entirely new. New characters, a COMPLETELY different story, and so on. I don’t want to see more of the stormtroopers, the TIE fighters, and the empire (FIRST ORDER). I want to see something new. That story arc with the Empire was finished. It was over and one with, which is what made Return of the Jedi special. The new movie kinda nullifies or ruins the original trilogy by making it seem like it’s not important.

Actually, I think I’ve figured it out… we’re missing a prequel trilogy… think about.

PREQUEL TRILOGY
ORIGINAL TRILOGY
SEQUEL PREQUEL TRILOGY X DOESN’T EXIST X
THE FORCE AWAKENS

It goes straight back to the opening of A New Hope, with the new order attacking people and being in power, but ignores explaining how it got there in the first place, which is what the prequels did. We’re missing a prequel trilogy between Return of the Jedi and The Force Awakens.

Well thank you for being a good sport and not forcing me to change my viewpoints. 😃

As for the Maz explaining the lightsaber, maybe not when the castle was being destroyed, but just somewhere. It should’ve been explained at some point in the story.

The fact that we’re even having this discussion proves the point. If you want to complain about “contrived” situations in TFA, you have to admit similar contrivances in the OT…or you just aren’t being realistic because you have to bend yourself into a pretzel to deny it.

Well… not exactly, at least in my opinion. The problem with The Force Awakens for me, and I apologize, you’ll never convince me otherwise, is that it is a copy of A New Hope, in terms of story. It takes that story, mixes it up, adds things, but then doesn’t explain certain crucial elements of the remixed story. A New Hope actually went out of its way to make sure the audience understood everything that was going on and didn’t leave us with questions hanging, which is something The Force Awakens fails to do: explain. I personally blame the rushed storytelling and absence of any kind of scene where someone explains what’s going on. One example is Maz saying, “That’s a story for another time.” after Han asks where she got it. Lots of stuff is just unanswered. I know people say that it’s part of a trilogy and it will be explained, but I don’t buy it. A New Hope was a self-contained movie that people could watch by itself and not watch any of the other movies, and still get a satisfying experience.

I understand you enjoyed it TV’s Frink for what it was, but I had major problems with it that no amount of creating theories and attempting to explain would change my mind. The fact is, I’m basing my opinion on my viewing of the movie. I saw it in the theater and I left unsatisfied and with many questions left unanswered.

A lot of his points though make very much serious. The definition of nitpicking for one person might be very different from someone else’s. I’ve encountered tons of fanboys in the past week or so, and whenever I bring up that the movie is a remake of A New Hope, they say I’m nitpicking. Everyone perceives it differently. Saying some of the things he said are flat out wrong isn’t necessarily true either, as the movie left a lot of questions unanswered.

I think we can all agree though, it is a straight-forward fact at this point, regardless of opinion, the story of the movie is most definitely a carbon copy of A New Hope.

I could be wrong, but it seems to me you very much enjoyed the movie and didn’t appreciate my harsh treatment of it. That’s understandable. I have to be honest here though, dude – I think you’re employing an extreme amount of ad hoc reasoning to debunk my review, which is fine; we all do it. I was doing it earlier in defense of ANH in that other thread. I hope I don’t sound too pretentious in saying that…it’s just my observation.

A lot of the points in my review were also rhetorical. Didn’t really require a response. It was intended as satire, which may or may not have been effective.

In the end, seriously, if you and I ever met in person, we’d probably enjoy a beer together and laugh about how bad TFA really was. Ha ha.

You sound like a reasonable dude. I admit, I overreacted in response to him, but his responses to your post were really irritating. But whatever, we all have our own opinions on the movie and everyone here should just respect that…

Also, am I invited for a beer?

My only question for you at this point is, is there some reason why you’re so unnecessarily hostile? Is it an attempt to be admired by others on the board? An ego thing? Maybe trying to appear witty? Would you treat someone you just met this way? It’s just so strange and unbecoming…I’d really like to understand why people often behave this way online. It’s an interesting phenomenon to me.

He loves this movie so much, that any amount of criticism is automatically wrong according to him.

So I feel this is potentially exciting for Star Wars faneditors. If we nip and tuck The Force Awakens, and maybe add some deleted scenes to calm the frantic pace down a touch, then I feel this movie could be special.

I’d like to end it one shot earlier as well. The final scene had slightly awkward editing all round, but surely you end on Luke’s face, given the whole film has led to that moment.

Add your ideas below…

You’re dreams are already coming true… okay, maybe not dreams. But I have already started a fan edit of the movie.

The goal of my edit personally is:
-Cut back on the fanservice moments, which are pretty obvious.
-Remove the Kylo Ren temper tantrums.
-Re-edit the film by taking out shots here and there and overly cheesy dialogue.
-Completely re-do the entire sound mix, as the current explosions and effects just didn’t appeal to me.
-Remove some of the unnecessary references to the prequels.
and most of all,
Ultimately remove The Force Awakens score and replace all of it with the best music from all the other films.

That last point is big for me. I kinda liked Rey’s theme and some notes from Kylo’s theme, but most of the score just didn’t stick with me. I personally thought it was the worst of all the Star Wars soundtracks. I can’t hold much against John Williams, as he is 83 now, but I was still disappointed.

As for the final shot of the movie…
