Revenge of the Sith (The New Canon Cut) [ON HOLD INDEFINITELY]
Time

Now that season 7 is out, do you think Padmé’s line to Anakin at the beginning about “there were rumors that you were killed” should be cut? We see them speak to each other while she’s visibly pregnant in the Bad Batch arc, and it’s established that their communication with each other is a regular thing. Rex even knows what to do without being asked, so it’s happened a lot. If they talk to each other that often, why would Padmé not know if he was dead or not? It’s a minor line, so it can be left in without taking anyone out of the movie, I was just wondering if you were planning to cut it.

I don’t think we should add Baby Yoda, aged up or not, since we have no idea what will happen to him in Season 2. He could look completely different. Maybe he grows an extra ear, I don’t know. As for everyone else added in the scene, some of it works. The Naboo pilots from the end of TPM for instance is a good idea. But in general, reusing scenes always takes me out of the edit. Of course that’s just me.

I’ve seen this idea mentioned before, but I think the battle on Exegol could be restructured so that the big moment with Lando’s fleet arriving feels more impactful. Basically, aligning the scenes with Palps and Rey, and the space battle. So maybe Palps drains the life out of Rey and Ben, then when he blasts his lightning into the sky, Lando hasn’t shown up yet. We see Poe’s X-Wing switch off, and that’s the “all is lost” moment. Rey hearing the voices of previous Jedi is what turns the tide, as she faces Palpatine, stopping him blasting his lightning. Then, Lando shows up with the massive fleet. It’s not perfect, and I’m not entirely sure how you could hide the ships that wouldn’t have arrived yet at this point, but it could work. It would align the two plot threads emotionally, even if they have very little overlap plot-wise (Rey killing Palps doesn’t automatically win the space battle, Poe winning the space battle doesn’t automatically kill Palps). Anyway, I agree that the Samuel Kim track feels out of place, but I also think a better song could be used when the fleet shows up. It doesn’t have the weight it should, in my opinion. Maybe “Through the Flames” from Return of the Jedi, when the Falcon escapes the Death Star II? That may be too on the nose, and I know there’s mixed feelings about using music that’s been in major scenes of previous movies, but it fits emotionally.

Yeah, trying to hide Anakin becoming Vader just doesn’t work in most edits, especially here. The Clone Wars makes his future no secret. Anytime Anakin does anything slightly bad, the Imperial March plays, and we see glimpses of Vader in the Mortis arc. This edit is fantastic as is, I think any future changes to it should just be small tweaks, refining what’s already there. I’d love a few more small references to Clone Wars characters, whether that’s Ahsoka, Rex, or Maul. But the edit is great as is, that would just be a nice bonus.

Yeah I have polarized thoughts about the novelization. It feels like Lucasfilm cannot make up its mind even after the saga is wrapped up. The same way TROS felt like a retcon of TLJ prompted by backlash, the ROTS novelization retcons controversial stuff established in the very same movie is adapted. Like Rey’s dad not being Palpatine’s biological offspring but a rogue clone of him. Or Ben and Rey’s kiss not being romantic.

On the other hand, the novel confirms stuff that we really should implement or make clearer in any fan-edit of this film, like the fact Palpatine transferred his essence to a clone, but that body is not viable enough to fully support his power (basically, “more than a clone, less than a man”).

Agreed. I don’t think it’s worth trying to explain how Palpatine survived in a fan edit, but I think even a quick line addressing whether he’s a clone or not would be worth throwing in.

Sorry if this has been brought up already, but there’s video of Ian McDiarmid saying the specific line you referenced (https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=orSF0EvYRD4&t=1099s at 18:19). I’m not an expert, but I think the audio quality there is decent enough to be placed somewhere in this (or any) edit.

I think it’s a cinematic trailer for the Rise of Skywalker update, and by the looks of it I think it’s Ajan Kloss though I’m not sure if that’s a map in the game.

It is. There’s actually a mod for the PC version of Battlefront II that recolors Takodana to look like Mustafar, with the red sky and all that (https://www.nexusmods.com/starwarsbattlefront22017/mods/2686). Using the cinematic tools could provide some good establishing shots. Anything involving in-game characters will stick out, but the trees and everything else look good.

Star Wars: The Rise Of Skywalker Redux Ideas thread
Time

I’ve been lurking this thread for a while, and I just wanted to say there’s some brilliant stuff going on here. I went from thinking TROS was unsalvagble for edits, to anxiously awaiting the release of all the great work that’s being done. Everything with the force ghosts is flawless really, it looks incredibly professional, jonh must be some kind of wizard. I think the terrible pacing of TROS has forced everyone into awkward positions in regard to edits. TLJ was bloated, so nearly everyone just cut down what they didn’t like and left the rest (which is completely fine). But since TROS already feels hacked to pieces, and the flaws are so deeply rooted within the film, it made everyone take some really creative choices, and I think the final products will look wildly different from each other, which is pretty exciting. Just excellent work all around 😁

One suggestion I was thinking of, since Mustafar seems to be a point of discussion: how about making Rey’s vision during her training sequence intercut with Kylo’s scene where he’s killing all of those people. Rey can sense what’s happening via their connection, which is what throws her off. So, Opening crawl > some form of Kylo on Coruscant > reaching out to Vader’s mask and hearing the word “Mustafar” > introduction to Rey, levitating in the forest > Kylo’s rage from the theatrical cut’s first scene intercut with Rey losing it. This presents some problems, like the reforging of his mask needing to be placed somewhere else now, if it was intended to be spliced together with Mustafar.

However I think this change would work for a few reasons: 1) The film really should highlight Rey and Kylo’s connection (the Dyad), and cutting back and forth between them here would help sell that a lot. Showing that even subconsciously they can reach out to each other across the stars (get it? 😁) 2) These scenes are visually striking put back to back. Kylo is in a forest fire, dead trees all around him, and a red sky. Rey is in a lush forest, full of life, with a blue sky. Some nice contrast wouldn’t hurt, especially since it reflects each of them nicely. 3) The Mustafar scene is very short and abrupt, if it’s cut together with another scene, it feels more complete. 4) The extremely quick clip show of other movies in Rey’s vision is super jarring. Not only is each shot on screen for about a tenth of a second, making it hard to tell what you’re looking at, they’re completely unconnected. You see flashes of Luke on Ach-Tu, Han’s death, Evil Rey, Palpatine’s Throne, Rey’s mom, Rey’s parents abandoning her, Kylo closing his eyes somewhere, and Vader’s helmet. What exactly is that supposed to mean? Is she worried she won’t live up to the Skywalker legacy (flashes of Luke)? Is she scared she’ll give in to the dark side (evil Rey)? Is she seeing glimpses of her parents (her mom hugging her, their ship taking off)? Is she sensing Palpatine’s presence (his throne)? Or is it something else? The answer shouldn’t be all of the above. If she’s just sensing Kylo massacring all the villagers, and that’s what makes her lose control, I think it’s a lot clearer. Her connection with Kylo is making her impulsive, reckless, and full of rage. If other scenes are edited, so that the film revolves around Rey’s fear of turning to the dark (mirrored with Kylo turning to the light), I think this could work. The film is completely aimless thematically, may as well center it around something.

Just my two cents. There’s a ton of great work going on, and I just wanted to chime in with my own suggestion here. I’m really looking forward to seeing everyone’s own edits.

SOLO: A Star Wars Story - Fan Edit Ideas Thread
Time

Really enjoyed the film, I didn’t mind Maul’s cameo, and it serves a purpose since it shows that Qi’ra is a double/triple/quadruple agent serving a higher figure, and that she didn’t just take off with the ship to abandon Han. I do think that the opening text should be condensed to a standard opening crawl, similar to how many edited Rogue One.

Another idea I had would be to cut down the scene where Han gets his name. I didn’t hate him getting the name Solo from an Imperial officer, but I did roll my eyes during the scene, so I think cutting it down to the officer asks for his name, Han smirks, and then the cut to the battle scene. Or, if I ditch the opening crawl idea, cut from Han smirking to the Solo title card.

I also think that the film could benefit from some light (not literally) regrading. A lot of shots looked a bit dull and flat, a bit of tinkering with the contrast could help.

Oh, and get rid of Chewbacca’s subtitles, I never felt like I needed to know what he was saying.

I’m gonna try making both of those cuts now that you brought them up. Good ideas TK. It’s crazy how such small cuts can elevate pacing and the consistency of a character.

Thanks! There are countless small trims and cuts that can really make a scene so much more impactful in this film. I love a lot of the theatrical release as is, but I think you can shave off a lot of minor moments to speed things up and cut down that ridiculous runtime.

I really like that shot, I think as RogueLeader suggested, speeding it up to standard and cutting out before the crossfade wouldn’t be a bad idea and just may work (emphasis on 'may’). I love the act of throwing away the lightsaber, but I hate how casual it was in the theatrical film, hopefully something different can be pulled off.

Something I’ve been meaning to bring up for a while but never got around to are these two very minor problems in the film that I haven’t seen mentioned anywhere: 1) A quick cutaway to the Dreadnought captain after Poe yells “Bring the bombs” 2) When Poe asks Leia for permission to “Hop in an X-Wing and blow something up”.

The first change would be to remove that quick 6-second cutaway to the First Order Star Destroyer crew after Poe blows up the last turret. The only dialogue in that moment inside the Dreadnought is an officer saying, “Sir, Resistance bombers approaching!”, and Captain Kennedy responding with “Of course they are”. It’s redundant information. We just heard Poe whoop in delight and say that bombers are coming, why would someone say the same thing a second later? It’s extraneous, and cutting from Poe saying “Bring the bombs” to the Resistance theme accompanied by the slow pan-up of the bomber fleet is just great.

The second one has bothered me on rewatch. The First Order has tracked the Resistance through lightspeed, and Snoke’s personal Star Destroyer has too. Finn says something to tune of “If we jump through lightspeed to escape, they’ll just be right behind us. They’ve got us”. Poe looks down for a beat, says “Not yet they don’t” and then the Resistance theme starts up, and we see him rush out of frame. The problem is that in the theatrical cut, he stops to have his “Permission to…” joke. Sure, it’s kind of funny, and I laughed at it, but it doesn’t jive with Poe’s character at all. The film repeatedly shows and tells us that he’s a hotshot that doesn’t listen to rules. In fact the scene immediately before this one tells us that same thing. So for him to stop and ask Leia a question just seems kind of silly. If you cut this joke out, the shot order is now “We’re trapped”>”Not yet they don’t”>Poe leaves the frame>BB-8 rushes to catch up with Poe>X-Wing Pilots running to the hangar bay.

Sorry for the long post, however in every edit I’ve seen of the film thus far, both of these lines are included and it’s been bothering me. They’re very minor changes so it would be easy to pull off.

EDIT: That looks pretty fantastic Snooker, a bit more tweaking and it’ll be flawless.
