The 1971 print we have has the Buck Rodgers clip in it...

I understand that, I am talking about the original theatrical release which supposedly had a 1-minute clip from "Things to Come" (1936) before the opening credits; instead of the Buck Rogers segment we currently have.

As I said the print we have is from 1971 and would therefore reflect the original theatrical release...and it has the Buck Rodgers clip.

Right, and like I said I understand that. Maybe I should have been as specific as possible... I was asking if this preservation would include the clip as a bonus feature not as a replacement for the Buck Rogers segment. But I guess confirming whether it actually existed in any version would be the more important inquiry/task. Unfortunately neither Lucas or Murch have a Twitter, so asking them is out of the question; although Murch does have a fanmail address.

Yeah, I am curious where this information regarding the Things to Come originated from. For example, TCM's site states:

"In the original release the movie includes a one minute clip from "Things to Come" (1936) before the opening creadits. When re-released in the 1990's this clip was replaced by a clip form "Buck Rogers" (1940)."

This is clearly wrong because the Buck Rogers clip existed before the 90s, so I am wondering if this was just a rumor that some person started or if it came from an actual reputable source.

So I was checking out THX 1138 on iTunes and found two versions of the film, which may be old news but I thought the details were interesting:

THX 1138 Director's Cut (HD)- released 2004 - runtime 1hr 28min

THX 1138 (SD) - released 1971 - runtime 1hr 24min

I don't mind spending the $3 to rent the latter version to confirm whether or not it is the original version.

This may be old news, and I can't recall seeing a link to it, but I just saw this website:

http://lucasfilm.com/thx-1138

Some interesting things are noted and presented, e.g. a behind the scenes picture I hadn't seen before:

Also, they feature a few quotes and informative pieces regarding the Director's Cut:

In an extensive restoration, THX 1138 was put through ILM's "digital intermediate" process. The film's original negative was scanned, digital color correction was applied, and a new digital master was created.

Nothing new here but I am hoping that the digital master will see another release by Disney. THX was part of the acquisition right?

The LaserDisc Database lists 2 JP laserdiscs for THX 1138. The 08JL-61162 (1986) is P&S (fullframed pan & scan) and the NJWL-11162 (1995) is WS (letterboxed widescreen).

The quality issue, as well as the censorship issue, were raised on the 1st post of this thread. (I don't think anyone established anything conclusive thereafter.)

Thanks for the info—appreciate it.

I contacted them about it, so I am still waiting to hear back; they say to expect a response within two days. If I don't hear back from them, I'll take the plunge and buy it lol.

Just got an email from them:

Thank you for contacting WB Shop.
It appears that this is the Director's Cut.
If you have any other questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact us again.

It's probably a mistaken look-up from a previous release -- just like that old Italian(?) 96m mis-read/type of the actual 86m. Has anyone seen this WB download to verify?

So I was just checking out the Warner Shop, where you can purchase the Bluray and DVD version of the Director's Cut. What was interesting is that they list in the details tab that it has a running time of 88 minutes. However, when you check out the Digital Download version(Windows Media - Buy), it lists the running time as 86 minutes:

http://www.wbshop.com/product/thx+1138+the+george+lucas+directors+cut+1000022991.do?sortby=ourPicks&from=Search

I contacted them to confirm that this is a typo, and that the digital version is the same Director's Cut. But how funny would that be if that wasn't the case, and it was indeed the original theatrical cut!

I am not watching that auction. I actually had that copy about ten years ago, but sold it a few years back. At the time I did not have a LD player, however, a friend of mine did and I watched it on his. I remember it playing back reasonably well, and thinking I how much I enjoyed it over my worn out VHS; of course if there were any hiccups I either didn't notice them or simply attributed them to his player.

Hah! I won that auction! If someone needs to use it for transferring purposes, let me know—I'd like to help this project in any way I can.
