Given news of this new footage, I kinda feels it devalued what one person tried to do a quarter century ago with what he had access to. It would be neat to see a 25th Anniversary edition next year that would essentially update the presentation based on the new footage with what could be done with the soundtrack to match it accordingly.

Having though back on the Moroder fan-edit someone wanted to do with using Kino's visuals to sync the soundtrack to, I sorta wonder how much more interesting it could be to try syncing it up to the lost footage too? That would be bitchin' if attempted!

While I hate bumping old threads like it was nothing (much like my life), I just noticed I had downloaded some of the .rar files from CW last year before the Fabulous Films thing went into effect but never got to download the rest when I had the chance though I kept getting errors often after downloading them as some parts weren't too perfect for whatever reason, and it's only a shame I only ever downloaded one of those discs completely in the end (still don't have much interest in paying for the R2 set and still haven't heard of it showing up stateside yet, and I don't want to get started on the BBC edit deal either), but it would've been nice to get the rest of those discs from someone here anyway that could help me out (much like I want ImaginAsian to continue the DVD's for Orguss and Remi after the folly of last month, I can't stand having black holes in my sets I bothered picking up).

When there's a dub in the future of a program that's Canadian-exclusive, it would probably be best to ask someone to tape it when it's still airing.

Best I got out of a similar thing was the first episode of that dub from a YTV broadcast but that was all.

A couple legit companies over there have done that, placing materials they DIDN'T license onto their disks. Again, very weird.

It's pretty interesting when you think of it. I can only see the Korean companies doing so with the intent those outside their country might buy them (especially Americans) if that is the length they go to obtain English-language subtitles for their product.

Noticed OriginalTrilogy has a new look. I hope I can get use to this simpler template, though I miss having those code tags.

I think we all do in some way, especially us Americans who deserve the best. I would've been fine with just CW's releases personally in the end, but that would be a matter of opinion (worse we can expect is whether or not a proper NTSC master could be made or would they just convert the PAL source over as usual).

Thanks for explaining some of the problems and pitfalls that FF have had to deal with CW. Makes things a lot clearer.

Now we can only hope they'll find a good way to distribute these over here (given such a new company they are, it's hard to find a break in the US market if any without a proper campaign or awareness).

I really hate the way that series like these were edited and cut for various countries.
It often means there is no definitive version (that we're ever likely to see anyway).

So sadly true, somehow I noticed a lot of Japanese-European co-productions that were of that type where they different content-wise over content in the editing.

If there was some way I could make up for this, here's a rar file I put together of the OP and ED themes for the Japanese "Taiyô no ko Esteban" (or "Esteban, Child of The Sun")...

My edit is still watchable, but not 100% perfect synch like the original Viz tape was. Ocean (the dubbing studio) used a process called WordFit, where they tried to perfectly match each lip flap.

Mines more like yours.

Somehow I think Viz (or Ocean) may have tampered a little with the frame rate. The audio in my edit comes on correctly when a character moves their mouth, but voice stops before the mouth does at times.
It's funny, because I did my own restoration of this film back in 2000 where I composited the same dub audio over a letterboxed Japanese VHS tape and it seemed a little better. Hmmm.

It's not so much a problem of tampering with the audio or visuals as VIZ's copy of the film differed from the master used for the Japanese/Korean DVD releases, and it only went out of sync in a few places where there are reel changes (indicated by those little circles on the top-right of the screen if you noticed). The last half-hour of the film was where I had the problem occurring and only assumed it was a fault in the pitch of the audio/picture if it was time-compressed a bit (the movie lasting roughly 120 minutes so I assume VIZ wanted to squeeze in promos in that fashion than to run out of tape).

Basically I was toying with an MKV file I was putting together to have tracks in Japanese, English and Spanish, not sure if i had already muxed it or not, but the subs was a different hurdle that meant having to time what I have of the script posted on a fanpage mentioned earlier. I still felt I had to make corrections/clarifications on it however as it's not an accurate fansub script.

Heh, I pretty much went with VirtualDub, Goldwave and MKVJoiner for my effort. The English subs I had was an .srt file I downloaded someplace.

Haven't gotten to the second film yet myself in creating an MKV out of personally. I already pawned off my VHS copy of the first film I had the dub on but still have the one for the second I didn't get around to watching yet (having already saw it subbed on the R3 disc). I still need to figure out proper authoring of DVD's or how to create audio/subtitle tracks therein (since many here have that talent past me).

Matter of fact, I could do better than that, I have the R3 DVD set of both GE:999 and Adieu GE:999, plus English dubs of both films from the VIZ Video releases (which I think are the best you'll ever hear for this film), not to mention the stupid Roger Corman "New World" edition of the first film despite the fact it blows but amusing for what they did to Harlock!

One thing of note in the end credits is to noticing how it would go from being in Japanese to temporarily going into English when it happens to credit the guys from the New York Institute of Technology for their involvement in some of the CGI in the film. Somehow I had to think of having watched Disney's "Tron" as a kid and wondering why in the world they didn't bother to credit the dozens and dozens of people responsible for having to slave away on inking and painting mattes for the Kodaliths over in Taiwan, leaving their names in Chinese characters on the screen. I guess they didn't feel like hiring a translator that day!

It's still a lot better over Streamline Pictures handling of the credits that seem to have had a problem keeping all the names on the screen at once, while cramming as many names as they can into such teeny-tiny text, it's a pain in the ass trying to decipher that mess on VHS (the LD is a tad better about it, I think they zoomed up a little).

Heh, hadn't gotten through this yet personally. Feel like I have to be in that mood to watch a crummy anime dub of the 80's to fully appreciate it somewhat (Worsel had a far better voice in the Streamline version obviously).

Not sure if having new audio would mean a thing if it was an excuse to pad out the time in that scene with exposition (what Harmony Gold was famous for with Robotech). Being reminded of a few other things HG had in their hands at the time like Dragon Ball, Dr. Slump, Minky Momo, as well as the films "Birth" and "Windaria", both of which got re-edited and re-written into completely different movies altogether.

I do have an AVI of that TV series compilation too, though in Spanish.

As for SpaceShake, that's where I got my script from. I have the Lumivision LD (that's the one I won off ebay), and would kill for the jap LD. You suck. ^_~
I know I do! It cost me a little under $30 to get that from an HK seller. Too bad that fansite is slightly outdated if the guy stopped caring to maintain it for so long.

Sounds like you've done more work then I've been able to on this so far. Widescreen = niiiice. I"m envious.

True, I also tackled making a subtitle script if you like to check out the 30-40 minutes I managed to get through so far (in .ass format)...

The widescreen isn't too perfect, it's the typical "shoot-everything-in-full-frame-crop-the-top-&-bottom" method that we've seen or talked about in the past, but at least it makes it easier to get a anamorphic transfer if one ever happens.
