Info Wanted: GOUT - Anyone done an anamorphic version? aka which version to get?
Time

Cheers for the really kind replies guys. I'l be honest with you in that I don't own the recent re-issue of the DVD's with the OT on (although i do own the 2004 DVD as well as the OT in Pan and Scan and Widescreen.. But then this thread was about owning the OT in anamorphic format and as far as I am aware this is no available in an official capacity (unless you want the special edition)

Info Wanted: GOUT - Anyone done an anamorphic version? aka which version to get?
Time

After reading the fantastic website (http://secrethistoryofstarwars.com)secrethistoryofstarwars.com)”) I’v decided to try and get an original copy of the ‘original films’ as best I can anyway. Why? Well mainly this website really drummed home how distorted the original films have become with not only new scenes being added but also the actual cinemtography of the films. Sure there’s some scenes which are kick ass, such as the space battle but I’m thinking that I’d prefer my children to watch the version that  I watched (near enough) when it comes time.

After checking on the screenshot comparisons it looks like the GOUT’s picture is a few shades under the actual DVD (although still looking very good) and so I was wondering if anyone has ever done a 5.1 anamorphic version of this?

If not, which is the best version to get really? I was thinking of the classic versions originally but now Im thinking more of some of the laser disc ports that are out if not the GOUT.

If anyone could confirm and advise it would be much appreciated,.

Darth Editous's latest release of ANH (version 4 or 5?)

I'v recently upgraded my Internet connection and armed with a fresh pack of blank DVD's want to actually watch some of these re-edits instead of simply reading about them. :)

System Specs - Laptop vs Tower
Time

Although I don't do it too often I do love video editing and I was about to begin my opus of a re-edit of Superman II which satisfied my view on how it should be done. I'm also toying with the idea of a subtle edit of A New Hope and Return of the Jedi too but lo and behold, I uninstall Adobe Premier 1.5 in favour of CS4 and it states I need 2GB of Ram.

For a long time now my system has been grinding to a halt. I'v had it for years and whilst a re-format might fix things and make it slightly quicker, I think if I want to do things quicker and satisfy all my video editing desires it may be best to get a new machine.

I hope to have children soon and with that will come the loss of our computer room - hence I'v always had it in mind to get a laptop. But how do you guys find these? Whenever I look through brochures/leaflets that come with papers I'm always confused because they'l label a super laptop as compatible for 'desktop replacement' but in my mind, a load of the other specs are much better than my current tower system! lol

Another bone of contention is the hard drives speeds as most seem to run around the 5,000RPM mark. Now back in the early days of getting into editing I knew it had to be 7,200RPM so here is my way around it.... to get an external hard drive that runs at 7,200 whcih I would use for Video Editing. Would this be fine or is there some kind of bottleneck that I have overlooked?

The thought of re-editing a film whilst sitting downstairs on the kitchen table sounds a lot better than being couped up in a spare room but I wondered what peoples thoughts are and your experiences as well if you don't mind :)

Star Wars 5.1 Audio
Time

I do feel the OP's pain though...I'v been yearning to do a re-edit of Superman II in amongst the many other edits that are released and despite all these having Dolby Digital 5.1, I'v asked before on how this is done and how you can remove dialogue/music but have never found out.

But Jaiman, you are a star mate. That is an absolute cracking read and now it gives me the impetus and more importantly, a little bit of knowledge of the right path to try and do this.

How to remove an element (actor for instance) from a scene
Time

Out of the many things I'v seen on these boards, one of the most amazing has probably been the clips where people have completely removed an element (in these two instances) an actor from the scene.

The two clips I'm thinking of are the following;

Superman II - Removing 'Duane' the Policeman as Zod and co exit a cafe (just before the English kids dad is lofted up in the air

Superman III - Completely removing Gus Gorman when supes is at the coal mine.

Now, if these were filmed with the exact same camera movements over a blank plate and identical lighting I would know how to do this but on earth do people accomplish things like this? How is a person deleted and for it to look flawless underneath?

This for me is one of the big mysteries of video editing and whilst I feel I have the software, I don't have the nowhow and would love to find out!

Stereo or DD5.1?
Time

One huge issue that has stopped me from doing an edit of Superman II has been the fact that I have zero knowledge on creating DD5.1 in Adobe Premier (can it even be done?)

So I decided to come to the conclusion of just doing a version in stereo but even at this early stage the pangs of Dolby are beginning to hit me and I'd love to do it in all it's surround sound glory.

How do you guys do it? I'v had a look at Vegas but it just seems slow and cumbersome compared to my editing package of choice (Premier). Is there a way to do it in Premier?

Info Wanted: Which edit would be the best for me?
Time

Was watching a program the other night on UK TV called ‘Bring back Star Wars’ and it involved a comedian / journo running from place to place to try and find (and then reunite) old cast members of Star Wars. Watching the show made me realise just how old the original films and the people within it.

Watching the clips and whatnot made me realise I want to watch the films with the extra clarity of DVD but with some of the new stuff removed. Here’s what I would like in the specific versions and if anyone could point me in the right direction it would be much appreciated:

A New Hope

Jabba Scene removed

Han Shooting first

Biggs removed

Not bothered by anything else really and would love it to have the DVD resolution

TESB

Exactly like DVD’s but with Jeremy Bullocks voice for Boba Fett and original Emperor.

ROTJ

Exactly like the DVD’s but with Sebastian Shaw playing Darth Vader.

Info Wanted: Return of the Jedi DVD footage but with 'young Anakin' and Naboo taken out?
Time

I thoroughly enjoyed the Star Wars DVD’s that came out (for what seems like) ages ago! I dont mind any of the added things, heck I can even accept them putting in Jabba if only because the new effects really make the scene work.

But I was wondering if anyone did a fan made edit that was idential to the DVD’s but with things removed, for instance…

I love Return of the Jedi but Im afraid that with Hayden Christensen appearing at the end just takes me right out the movie.

Has someone done a version idential the DVD in everyway (picture and audio wise) but with the original scene with Sebasian Shaw back in?

Cheers!

Insterting 'blank space' into Premier
Time
I currently have an edit thats 35 minutes long and all the various clips are edited in the way I originally intended it to be. However, I would like to insert something half way through...the only problem is, whereas in Adobe Premier 6.5 you could overlay footage and it would move all the other clips (from then on) foward on the time line. With Adobe Premier Pro 1.5 it actually overlays over the existing footage.

Is there a way around this?

A few questions on creating AVI's
Time
Cheers for the replies so far guys.

Regarding Vegas, I have zero experience in using it If im perfectly honest with you. But I figured the only way to learn it and indeed other techniques is just to go head first and experience it for myself.

One of the reasons Im using it over Adobe Premier Pro is because it supports AC3 Audio - To be honest, I love using Premier Pro but because it doesent support AC3 audio means I cant use it if I want a 5.1 soundtrack.

I never realised that if I produce a cut I will have to do every sound file individually. How do you guys go about adding in music from a CD? Of course this is only in stereo so how do you make it fill all 5 speakers?

But I suppose the most important question of all is... How do I seperate the sound files to split up the AC3 Soundtrack?

A few questions on creating AVI's
Time
After a few aborted attempts, Im finally ready to knuckle down and try and re-edit Superman II! But once again I have reached an obstacle before I have even begun!

One of the great things about Sony Vegas is the ability to retain a 5.1 soundtrack - a neccesity for me.

Anyway, I have extracted the footage from the DVD using DVD Decryptor and its left me with the AC3 audio and the M2V Video.

Now here comes the science bit...

When I come to create the AVI in TMPGENC, it shows my intended avi file as having an FPS of 29.97 and I set the video mode as 'interlaced'. But before I began transferring 31 m2v files to AVI I figured I better make 100% sure what I was doing was indeed correct.

So I loaded up the M2V File within DGIndex to see its properties.

Lo and behold it came up with the following:

Video Mode: Progressive
FPS - 23.976

Now I may be stating the obvious here but I need 100% clarifcation...does this mean that I need to create the avi using these settings? I would imagine that if I use 29fps, the audio will be out of synch.

I would be very grateful if someone could confirm this for me though...do I use these settings within TMPGENC and VEGAS when doing my project?
