Ahh, it’s getting there, it just needs some tweaking to make it sound a bit more natural. I wonder too if using a data base of all vader quotes to get some letters/sounds that flow better to make it natural. It would need to be taken from ESB and ROTJ as opposed to ANH.

Yeah, still room for improvement. Using parts of other quotes might work, this is probably the best I can do using only the Bible reading.

I’m just curious if anyone felt this would be a worthy fix, to rotoscope it out of the first half of the shot. It lasts about a second, so 23ish frames? In the previous shot with Rey and the dagger guard, you see them fighting in the distance behind Kylo Ren, and it would be cool if one could even make it look like Rey cut through one of them (maybe a flash and see it falling, for example) at that moment. In that shot she strikes both the left-hand dagger and the right-hand dagger, and if you had her cut through the left dagger, it also would be about 23 frames or less of work.

I’m not doing my TLJ edit for a while, but this is something I would do (unless someone beats me to it).

The Force Awakens - Ridley's Edit (WIP)

Thank you for commenting! I’ll try to answer everything.

• I’ve had second thoughts about replacing the main theme. I don’t feel strongly about it so it might as well be left as it is.

• I’ll try to not Lucas it up, yes. 😉 It’s mostly the desert bird where I add unnecessary digital effects, but I think it will look nice.

• I do love the shot of Kylo’s saber ignition. If I can fit it in it could be a nice addition.

• I do plan on cutting Rey’s arrival on Ahch-To and saving it for my TLJ edit. Originally I thought it should stay, but after seeing TLJ I felt the cliffhanger was unnecessary.

• I’m not removing any Snoke scene, just some dialogue. The Ben Solo reveal will be gradual but I will keep Han/Leia talking about him before Kylo removes his helmet for Rey, so at that point it will be clear who he is.

• Thank you, I might fine tune the island vision a bit, we’ll see.

• I don’t plan on removing Ren’s wrath.

• I don’t mind how Finn gets his name, I don’t see how it could be handled differently. I feel like that’s when he and Poe becomes friends, so it has a use. I don’t mind “that one heck of a pilot” either.

• I see your point about the X-wings, but I haven’t really thought about it and I think it would be too much work to change it, sorry.

• All changes from Restructured will stay, yes! 😃

Thank you for your interest. I still have a lot of work left, but there could be clips and perhaps a workprint cut coming up in the next months.

Sir Ridley has mentioned that he was planning on making his scar look more like it does in TFA. So if he does, we will lovingly steal from him if he’s willing.

Yep, that’s the plan. I’ll probably upload useful FX shots I make separately so they can easily be inserted into other edits.

This conversation has been pretty interesting here and I’d love to dive into it, but I am going to change direction a little. I decided to go ahead and get started on an edit or two. The first one I’ve gone with is, “Your father wanted you to have this when you were old enough”. It’s not perfect, but hopefully it’ll get the ball rolling.

Seamless! Personally I don’t mind that Obi-Wan would lie about that, he’s hiding the truth about his father anyway. But if that’s too controversial then this edit would work well as a replacement.

So you’re saying they would have ships inside what is basically a gun barrel? That doesn’t seem very practical. If you want to convince anyone that the bad guys’ big death star like planet is in fact not a death star (but secretly it is) then I think you might need to redesign it or show it from a different angle. No trench, no big circular opening.

Yes, I agree it’s more iconic than DS I due to its more interesting design, but I can easily think of it as DS I while still under construction.

A crazy thing to do would be to restructure the whole original trilogy so that DS II is DS I under construction, and combine the final battles of ANH and RotJ. Not sure that would work out, but…

It’s a nice moment but I’m in favor of cutting it. They were standing right by each other in the map scene and then the very next scene she’s wearing a new outfit, so time has passed. You’re telling me Poe wouldn’t seek out the girl that Finn just almost died trying to rescue? And to top it off he’s in the front of the crowd that sends off Rey as she leaves the base.

I understand that it’s something that Rian wanted to include to make up for one of Abrams many slips but it doesn’t make sense in context. It’s something that should have happened in TFA, even the novelization of TFA had them meet at this time:

“The map.” Rey could only stare in wonder as her eyes wandered over a shining, resplendent portrayal of a substantial portion of the galaxy. “It’s the whole map!”

“Artoo!” C-3PO’s tone was that of a proud relative complimenting a member of his family. “Artoo, you’ve done it!”

Cheers and spontaneous embraces filled the room with so much joy that no one paid any attention to who was hugging what representative of whichever species. Rey and Poe were not excluded, though their sudden, tight clinch of shared excitement led to a moment of mutual awkwardness.

“Uh, hi,” the pilot mumbled. “I’m Poe.”

She nodded slowly, searching his face and finding that she liked it. “I recognize the name. So you’re Poe. Poe Dameron, the X-wing pilot. I’m Rey.”

“I know.” He smiled back, a little more at ease. “Nice to meet you.”

Which is now non-canon and a really weird slip-up for the Story Group to make.

Huh, yeah, that is a bit weird. I wonder if the meeting could be edited into TFA instead.

Things happen between movies Adywan. Poe is right next to the girl who helped save his BB unit along with his new best pal Finn but he would wait until the ending of the next movie to say “oh, thanks by the way. Rey, right ?” Doesn’t make any sense. Not a huge continuity issue, but still it felt weird and forced at the end of TLJ.

In this specific case nothing could’ve happened between them between the movies. Maybe between scenes, but not necessarily. I see your point though.

As a general rule, I wouldn’t remove things people expect to see when they watch a certain Star Wars movie. That includes major characters, settings and plot points. Like, if it would be on the poster of the movie, leave it. Jar Jar, ewoks, DSII, Star Killer Base, etc.

Hey guys. Just finished up my personal Last Jedi edit. Here are some clips showing a few of the cuts and how they work:

Poe’s Intro

Maz Convo

Fathier Escape

Ending with post-credit scene

Lemme know what you think!

All of these work well! I especially like the first two. Not sure I would use the other two myself, but they’re good.

I wonder if any of the TLJ video games have any useful audio and dialogue that could be used?

There are lines from Rey, Finn and Phasma in Battlefront II from the original actors, but they’re mostly one-liners said when fighting. Not sure if there’s anything useful there.

There’s no “Lego TLJ” game yet, but the TFA game has some lines that can be edited into something useable.

I saw this over on the Star Wars subreddit, and I wonder what people think:

Ben was being drawn to the dark side by Snoke. Luke had sensed this in him and went to confront him. He looked inside Ben and saw a vision that Snoke had already turned Ben and he would bring destruction and the end of everything he loved, so Luke in the briefest moment of instinct turned on his lightsaber.

I think the thing that makes it so hard to swallow this scene for many people is that it still doesn’t really look like instinct, despite what Luke says. There’s a bit too much telling here and not enough showing. I think if they had actually shown us Luke’s vision of Ben destroying everything, it might’ve helped put us in his shoes and understand why his instinct was to turn on that lightsaber. It’s made clear that this vision was very bad, so actually showing us that vision would help us clear up that it was just a brief moment of temptation and that Luke wasn’t actually going to follow through and kill Ben.

I still think it’s explained well enough, but the “show, don’t tell” rule exists for a reason, so I think they could’ve done a better job with this scene regardless.

So, this commentator is suggesting that, during Luke’s flashback scene where he reveals that, out of instinct, he ignited his lightsaber… to actually show the atrocities that Luke saw when he looked into Ben’s mind.

Perhaps it would be possible to use some of Rey’s flashback sequence from The Force Awakens during this brief scene to really sell the “instinctual” reason why Luke ignited his lightsaber.

Thoughts?

I’ve had this idea too. I would use bits from TFA and TLJ (perhaps even IX) and cut together a short distorted little nightmare vision that would cause Luke to ignite his saber almost in self defense.

One concern I have is that I imagine it can’t be too clear. I don’t know how looking at the future like that works in canon but I think the vision would have to almost imply things rather than clearly showing them. Like maybe it could show Kylo wearing a helmet and having a red saber, but I don’t think it could show exactly how the helmet or saber looks.

Anyway, that will be a fun thing to experiment with.

What’s “the WOWOW recording”?

Also, I don’t know if I find the regrading necessary. In your comparison it looks like what you’ve done is make the overall color greener and brighter. The green is pretty nice and the brightness makes some shots “pop” a little more, but it also takes away details in bright areas, especially the skies look overexposed.
