I don't know if the post DVD era crowd is going to get it. I've seen some VCR's distort their onscreen displays when fast forwarding, so don't sweat it if you can't correct it. I really can't see any distortion in the clip though.

That deleted scene with Obi Wan and the analysis droids might have potential, if you could find silly things for the droids to say.
Spotted an Empire reel on Ebay with the elusive audio cassette.
Gone With The Wind and The Wizard of Oz both had reissues horribly cropped into widescreen, and those mutilations are part of their gross to this day. So, this isn't quite a new issue after all.
On the other side of the same coin, if Episode IV leaps past Episode I in it's 3D release, we probably won't mind that very much. ;)

In Finland TPM 3D has pretty much flopped. In 1999 it was the most watched movie with 439 496 viewers. Now in two weeks it has been seen by 6 936 viewers. In its first week it finished at 7th place and on second week it isn't even in the top 10. For example the latest Mission: Impossible movie had 13 928 viewers last week (from the total of 106 601, it was released 3 weeks ago) to give you some perspective.
Edit: maybe a better example would be Lion King 3D which has now been seen by over 15 000 people here. I guess 3D releases of old movies aren't that popular here, but to be fair, both were just released on BD just last year.

A couple multiplexes near me aren't showing it anymore, or have cut the number of showings down. With all the new stuff coming out this weekend and next month, there won't be enough screens to go around.
Had another idea for the speeder chase. As Zam's speeder just bursts into flame on it's own, maybe an insert shot of a dashboard "check engine" light or some other indicator of trouble?

I picked up a couple silent black and white reels in thrift stores in my college days. (Saw quite a few if them, as it seems that nobody ever donated the color/sound versions.) Watched them on a cheapo little self contained projector that looked like a portable tv, that could scorch a frame if it ever jammed.
To the best of my recollection, the SW subtitles are real.
I have never seen a silent BW super 8 of Empire, let alone knew it existed!

Maybe it was 70mm engagements only? The only local theater I know for sure had the gear for it back then didn't open until 1986.
With 3D blu ray players coming down in price, I don't see any exclusive pack in titles being that much of an inducement now. People who already own a 3D player may resent having to wait for TPM to be released separately.
You're thinking of Betacam. The tapes look similar, but are incompatible.

I recently saw the Betas of ESB and Jedi, and there were no differences from the LD versions.
Too bad that's the only scene with Yoda's little flying chair, it would be hilarious if it made sounds.
The Betas are identical to the fullframe LD and VHS masters of the era.
