I have to disagree. There is one discrepancy in ANHR which is a dead giveaway that it was filmed in the '70s, while the effects are 1990s/2000s technology.
I have to jump in in defence of Indy 4. I went in with low expectations, after seeing what Lucas did to Star Wars, and was very pleasantly surprised. It's no Raiders of the Lost Ark but it's a ways ahead of Temple of Doom and at times comes quite close to Last Crusade. I hope they make a fifth one and I see Shia whatshisname becoming quite a star. Sure, the action is a bit over-the-top (and I think the car chase in the jungle could have been cut in half) but hey, it's Indiana Jones!
Depends where you are. There seem to be 3 PIF streams, one in America, one in the UK and one in Australia. I'm going to start the Australian chain as soon as Adywan mails a disc out to me, because I and the other Aussie on the forum can't download it through the usual means. I don't know who's doing the other chains, but I believe they've been started already by people who've downloaded it.
Saying of which, I don't want to sound impatient, but well, I am very eager to see this and share it and Ady, have you sent out the disc yet?
Correct me if I'm wrong, Ady, but didn't you put the extended Alderaan sequence on the DVD (at least partly) SO people could edit it back in if they so chose?
While the initial colour pass does look very similar to the GOUT, I would probably be in favour of at least trying it with the bluer sky. After all, this isn't an OT restoration, but a revisiting. It may turn out to look lousy, but I'd like to see the frame with the Revisited cockpit and 2004 (or otherwise bluened) sky so as to be sure.
You know, I never would have thought of that. To me ESB needed very little done, just colour, continuity and deletion of some SE elements. But both the DS2 idea (even after the credits or as a deleted scene) and the snowstorm idea (if Ady could pull it off, which I bet he could) would be neat.
I guess I may as well post this now. I am unable to get usenet or torrents, but Adywan's mailing me a copy of the PAL DVD-9, and I'll pass it on to anyone in Australia or NZ who wants a copy (and is willing to continue the PIF chain). Please PM me. Johnny Ringo has the first spot.
Well, I'm firmly in favour of removing the DS scene from ROTS in any case. If they were building them both at once, they should have shown them both in ROTS; but the implication all through ROTJ is that DS2 was built because DS1 was blown up.
If Ady doesn't feel like putting the scene in ESB and then making a Purist version without it, he might feel like making the necessary changes (painting out Tarkin and adding Endor) and including it on the DVD as a deleted scene.
I think it would be okay to show DS2 in ESB, but if and only if
1. The scene is placed at the very end of the film (probably after the scene with Lando in the Falcon and Luke's new hand, but before could be made to work too),
2. The scene (at least in part) utilises the footage from the ROTS finale with Tarkin 'shopped out, with perhaps an establishing shot over Endor to set it off from the preceding scene with Vader, and
3. Said footage is subsequently cut from Adywan's ROTS Revisited edit.
I think the end of ESB is much better than the end of ROTS to show a cliffhanger Death Star, for two reasons: How did they take 19 years to build DS1 but only 3 to have DS2, a bigger station, mostly built and fully functional? Also, the inclusion of DS1 in ROTS detracts from the cliffhanger, at least if you're watching them in story order, whereas in ESB it could enhance it.
I'm not really fussed about the inclusion of the scene in ESB — but I do think it makes much more sense here than in ROTS and would like to see it cut from ROTS when it comes to that.
Re Ghostcut's comment: I've actually been working on ideas for a set of covers for the entire Revisited saga once it's all done, complete with a containing box. I feel the design works splendidly for a box set, but less well for separate cases, because it's very minimalist and in particular the design for ANH is almost entirely black and white. So you probably won't see it, unless anyone actually asks, until at least ROTJ is Revisited, if at all.
No pressure, Adywan. ;)
Re Darth Wagner: I think the release of the original film is a slightly bigger event. :p
It's designed like an old roadshow picture, like Lawrence of Arabia...with an intermission between discs.
The instrument has yet to be invented that can measure the quantity of my approval of that idea.
Are you intending to do this for all three films? Will there be overture and entr'acte? (Okay, so I'm half-joking with the second question — not like we couldn't just choose our own).
Also, are you still going to use Adywan's REVISITED edit?
