Still hoping for someone in the UK to offer to cap my video of this. The video is still sealed and never been played so the quality should be about as good as we'll ever get

Mine was sealed and had never been played, but turned out to be awful quality. Hopefully your will be better. I might be jinxed with this, best if I don't touch it...

Only 4 GB for one hour? What codec did you use?

Ha, I think you overestimate me my good man.

This is the "finished", encoded DVD (mpeg2 I assume)

I did this the numpty way. The encoding's not the problem, it's the source. Annoyingly, the David Dickinson (Yes, I know!) VHS I transfered straight after came out perfectly, as did the VHS is did before. This tapes just not very good quality.

Yeah, you'd think so wouldn't you?

OK, the good news is this is captured and the encode is great. I've got it as a DVD but it's very no-frills. It's high bitrate and the 1 hour thing comes in at around 4 GB

The bad news is that the original VHS quality was really bad. it's shaky and jerky in places. There are places where it looks like a bad encode because Vader's arm is jerking as if it's dropping frames. But that's exactly what it looks like if you watch the VHS straight off.

It's possible that someone else might be able to get a better capture from this tape, but with the equipment I have it's not going to be all that great. It's watchable I guess, but not pleasant. I have transfered other stuff to DVD and it's generally pretty good, but this puppy isn't up to snuff.

OK, I was going to anounce this as a surprise, but since this thread isn't as dead as I'd hoped...

I bought the game recently on Ebay. Cost me £11 inc postage. The thing is brand-spanking new, never been used. the board is unpunched, the figures are still on the sprue and the tape is still sealed in celophane. Hopefully I will be capping this to DVD tomorrow night.

There's no way I have the time to put together a menu and sort out all the chapters in a sensible way. I'm also not willing to release this into the wild without at least a rudimentary menu, so if anyone wants to slap a menu together and sort out chapters I'll post you a copy of the DVD you can turn it into a decent release. I'd prefer someone in the UK, but really it's just got to be someone who (a) knows what they're doing and has done it before and (b) can work with PAL to produce a PAL version of this. If someone wants to make an NTSC version later that's fine by me (although I reserve the right to point and laugh at you) but not until the PAL version is available.

Any takers?

PAR2 files are basically a reverse hash for a given archive. Like if you've ever used sfv files to check the integrity of an archive, they tell you the exact file size for each piece. If the files all have the right size, the files are probably not corrupt.

Taking that one stage further, you can use PAR (and PAR2) files to not only tell if a given archive is correct, but to re-construct the missing bits if it's not.

Like the rules that govern a Sedoku puzzle. Imagine you only have a few number missing from the sedoku grid, as long as you know the rules you can fill in the missing numbers. The more numbers are missing, the more rules you need to work out which numbers go where.

Kinda.

Info Wanted: Best way to do reviews for the OT Preservations?
Time
Actually (now that I come to think about it) I don't think *I'VE* met anyone else who's ever claimed they actively dislike surround sound either!

Although I have met lots of folks who think that surround sound isn't worth the effort (by which I mean time, money, hassle and the incovenience of arrranging your furniature in such a way that surround actially works). I used to have surround on an old Widescreen Philips TV I had about 7 years ago. I found it really creepy. When I could hear sounds coming from behind me my brain just couldn't associate that sound as being part of the same presentation as the picture in front of me. So the sound was distracting. If the back channels just mimic the left and right (ie if you use a 5.1 setup to listen to plain ol' stereo) it's not a problem.

It's another weirdness I have I guess...

Thanks for the input, Grinder.

I will be using an Epson LCD projector with about a 2.5 metre screen. The DVD player is a Pioneer 575, which is a *decent* but unexceptional player. Progressive via Component cable. The projector has a 3 metre throw and viewers are sitting 2.5 metres from the screen.

We will not be paying much heed to the sound quality since I can't stand surround sound. I have analogue stereo and a bass speaker, that's all. Surround freaks me out so I don't waste money on something I don't like. But if we notice anything "wrong" or wierd about the sound that'll be mentioned.

We will be reviewing all the versions of ANH that I have. This will be:

Editdroid
Dr Gonzo
Cowclops 2
Moth3r
OCP Classic
Darth Editous

The last 2 won't be compared to the "proper" LD rips, but they're there so that people can see what we think to them, what we think the picture quality is like etc. I suppose that I ought to throw the 2004 DVD release into the mix, but I don't/won't own anything "special edition" so I might see if I can borrow or rent it.

All I have to do now is get my girlfriend's permission to hog the lounge all evening to do geekboy stuff...

Guys,

The reviews thread Rik’s posted is really great reading. I really want to put together a decent review and will be gtetting together with some buddies at some point over the next couple of weeks to destroy several beers and write up a review of all the sets I have.

While we’ll be spending a fair anmount of time on this (one evening, probably 4 hours or so) obviously there won’t be time to watch the whole of episode IV 6 times. So we’ll have to keep it to half an hour (tops) of each version. But the question is, which half hour? Which scene’s are the ones which really show up any imperfections?

The Humanoid (1979), the Italian Star Wars

This movie is TERRIFYINGLY AWFUL.

I really didn't think it was possible for a movie to be blatantly this bad and such a direct rip of starwars. Ugh! And "Darth Vaders" lines are hilarious!

Some stormtroopers go down to Tatooine and fail to capture Pricess Leia. When they get back to their Star Destroyer, their leader is brought in front of Vader to explain his squad's failure. After the stormtrooper basically says "er, sorry, we failed" Vader says to this guy "You will be stripped of your privilages for 100 days!". No Darkside force choking for this guy, no "appology accepted" lines, just a slap on the wrist for the stormie and back to business!

And then at the end of the movie where he takes on "Luke" and the wierd monks with lightsabre bow-and-arrows, "Vader" actually utters the line:

"You can't stop me now, princely hero!"

I nearly shat myself laughing at that one...

DVD Keepcases
Time
Anyone in the UK:

http://www.svp.co.uk/

4 way case is 20p
6 way case is 29p
8 or 10 way case is 55p
Genuine Amaray single case is 20p

I've ordered from them many times and they've always been superb. They also have the best selection of DVD and CD media I've ever seen and cheap batteries too. Excellent value for money. Currently they're doing a 2-for-1special on Epson ink carts for those r300 CD printers too.

Thanks!!

What he said. How can I get a DVDr version of these edits?

The "EditDroid" Trilogy DVD Info and Feedback Thread (Released)
Time
Sorry to put this post here but the splinter thread for Widescreen/anamorphic discussion appears to have disappeared. It looks like threads get deleted after a month with no posts.

I bought a home cinema projector this weekend. It's HD 16:9 and of course, the zooming on a letterboxed DVD is done using digital scaling prior to the image being projected. Comparing this to the way my old TV does this (by scaling the image in the tube itself) everything looks much better. I'm assuming that all HDTV kit works the same way, and that's why folks in the US don't seem to mind the zoom mode on their 16:9 displays, simply put the method of scaling totally different and the picture quality is therefore "better".

Editdroid's version looks rather nice on a 2.6 metre screen
