1977-->1993: What?!

If I had to guess (DISCLAIMER: and this is purely a guess, with no real concrete knowledge) I'd say that the fact that these are considered "Bonus Features" will exempt them from a lot.

Time to accept what we are given and be grateful?

There is no reason to be grateful for anything. They are putting out a product. As consumers, we are being asked to purchase this product. Now it's our turn to see if what they put out is worth our money. If it's given to us as a gift, then yes, be grateful to the person that gave it to you. But when you purchase a product, they expect to be compensated. Grateful doesn't factor in at all.

Neil

Being a dirty little pinko Marxist like I am, I fully agree with Neil on this one. I might love Star Wars, but until they start sending me my stuff for free, I'm not going to kiss anyone's ass for selling me something.

Sometimes I'm amazed at the effectiveness that the corporate money machine in this country has had in convincing the public that we're all being done a favor when they decide to grace us with some new product for us to spend our money on.

I don't know. Their responses seem just a little off in some way. I can't put my finger on it, but something seems a little rotten.

Okay, I just read over that thing and I definitely see what you mean by some sort of lurking strangeness. Nothing you can quite put your finger on... but certainly the feeling that some non-Euclidian tentacular monstrosity is about to jump out at you and go BOOGY!! BOOGY!! BOOGY!!

I kid! I kid! But seriously, there is something unnerving about the statements in that article...

Oh, who am I kidding. This thread is beyond clusterfucked anyway. If half the passion you guys displayed for going after one another was poured into trying to get Lucasfilm's attention, maybe something would get done, but you're so easily distracted by a bargain basement troll and masturbatory dreams of a man DYING for your DVD's...

fuck it. Whatever. Wank on, I guess.

It sounds like you're at the same place I found myself several times over the last year and a half or so.

I'd do all the grass-roots stuff I could to get folks to come here and sign the petition. I tried everything and talked to anyone who would listen in the hopes of getting support for a release.

Then I'd pop in here and see this exact "George Lucas made my favorite movies but I still want him dead of syphilis and rotting in hell" crap in every 3rd post, and I'd just wonder what the hell chance we actually have of seeing results if this was what our representation acted like.

Seriously, I've been DJing a weekly dance show locally for the last 7 consecutive years. If anyone knows anything about the club scene, 7 years for one show is a bit on the long side. Anyway, during this time I've had more than my fair share of folks who would come up to my DJ booth and demand I change the music. It didn't seem to matter that the dance floor was packed and that whatever I was currently doing must be working... they wanted it their way. Normally that would be alright: You want to hear something else then request it, no problem. But these fucks would sometimes berate me with personal insults because I had not precognitively surmised what they had wanted to hear as they walked in the door. To these people, I said "fuck you, learn some damn manners" and then made it a point to gear my playlist to piss them off from that point onward.

That’s the old “you can catch more flies with honey than with vinegar” adage at work there, kids. Apply this anecdote as you will.

But really, this is the internet. Anonymous fucktardery is every person’s right as soon as they pay their monthly ISP bill, I suppose.

I wasn't making insults, I was making statements.

He's been on this board posting baseless accusations and assumptions. This is merely a fact. If he takes insult to it, it is no fault of mine.

And I never said he should be removed for disagreeing with anything. I myself disagree with many of the folks here on a number of things. Case in point: I don't hate Lucas and certainly would never stoop to the level of immaturity to wish death upon him.

I simply implied that his caustic attitude would most likely bring him a ban due to his actions, not his opinions.

Oooooh! A gay insult hot on the heels of your recent "u cant get a gurlfrend n00b lololol!!!!111eleventy-one" zinger. You, my friend, are truly redefining the bleeding edge of acerbic wit!

Nevertheless, I wouldn't bother getting too comfortable around these parts. Your presence here is obviously one borne merely of a need to incite conflict. You have no interest in preserving the OT, and thus far have done little other then spawn endlessly circular arguments based on a number of willfully ignorant misconceptions. This, coupled with your generally tactless, insulting posts, will surely result in your removal from these boards sooner, rather than later.

I've stated many times that I enjoy the SE, and that I have never hated, nor ever will hate, Lucas.

Most of us want the OT because we love the OT, not because we hate the SE. This battle is born of positives, not negatives.

Try to think (and read a bit) before you post.

A few thoughts.
Time
[[ Maybe this'll be food for thought... maybe not. Either way, I don't care, it's just my thoughts. Undeniably rambling throughout, but it’s what has been in my head for the past week or so, and I just felt it needed to come out to an audience that might give a rats ass. ]]

I personally like the prequels. They're not flawless by any means, but I enjoy them and watch them regularly. Also, I sit down and watch the 2004 SE set from time to time. Again, not flawless, but I like 'em for what they are regardless. I also have the Clone Wars cartoon, Ewoks movies, Ewoks and Droids cartoons and even R2-D2: Beneath the Dome, all on the official release DVDs.

In short, I love Star Wars. I will watch pretty much anything that comes out because the characters and story are still interesting to me. It's just the way I am and I figure if it ain't hurting anybody, then what the hell does it matter?

But I still want the original Original Trilogy. It's what I grew up on, it's what I remember, it's what shaped me as a kid and helped me be the man I am today.

When they were wheeling my wife into the surgery room to perform a C-section because there were complications during the birth of my daughter, I was understandably freaking out while I stood alone in the hospital room, waiting for a nurse to come in and escort me in to be with my wife. As I stood there, exhausted from having been awake for the last 72 hours, already running on reserve energy and cigarettes, I just thought to myself, "Now, what would Luke be doing in this situation?" Cheesy and a bit stupid? Of course. But the point is that this perfect calm and clarity came over me. I had spent my entire like watching the adventures of this farm boy growing into a man and learning to control his inner darkness in his fight against the shit life threw at him, and I was finally able to take something from that.

I wasn't thinking to myself "man, when Luke was falling down that shaft in Cloud City, screaming like a school girl the whole time...” I was thinking about the strength and purpose of the characters I had grew up watching… the strength they’ve shown since 1977. The strength they showed before Lucas went in and started messing around with who the characters were, not just what was going on around them.

"Great, Reb... but what's the fucking point already?"

Well, that is the point. That's the whole freaking point of this fight to get the OOT. They aren't just movies anymore. They were the catalysts for the dreams and imaginations of a whole generation. I’m not saying they owe us the movies because we own them in some fashion… far from it. I’m saying that they owe us the movies because of the responsibility they’ve taken on by doing something so influential in the first place. Their legacy has become the icon of a generation.

I can’t hate Lucas for what he’s done and what he’s doing, because he gave that to me. But I can sit back and sadly shake my head at what the man has become. He may still put out some entertainment from time to time that I can enjoy where others may not, but he’s lost touch with something, somewhere.

I’ve always maintained that the OOT would see the light of day again. I’ve argued the point until I was blue in the face and had plenty of evidence to fuel my conjecture. Now it turns out that I was right… sort of. We’re getting them, but they’re being shipped to us with none of the respect they deserve. A transfer from a laserdisc master, in non-anamorphic widescreen would, quite honestly, be fine for me. I just want the movies. What upsets me, however, is how this whole thing is being handled. Packaged with the ’04 editions? I already have them. Extras disc? These are movies… not cut scenes. Best way to present them without spending ‘too much money’? Lies, obviously, as I can pop a number of DVDs in my collection into my player right now and show you bits of the OOT in a gorgeous anamorphic transfer.

So I guess what I’m trying to say is that I’m not buying them. I had originally planned to get them because I wanted them, and despite what Jay might say about “some people will buy any crap that’s thrown at them”, or a number of others claiming “fanboy” toward anyone willing to shell out more money to the Lucas Money Machine, I wanted them because it was pretty damn close to what I had asked for. Lots of features that other’s clamor for were never on my list of demands because what I wanted were the movies themselves… not a list of special features.

But as I sit back and look at what Star Wars really means to me, it becomes clear that my love for Star Wars is exactly why I won’t be buying this set. I bought the prequels because I didn’t have them, and I wanted them. I bought all those other DVDs because I didn’t have them, and I wanted them. But there's something different here: I have these movies. Laserdisc transfer? Yeah… got that already. I have the Star Wars I love and there’s nothing new being offered in the upcoming release.

It’s not that I’m insulted with what they’re doing here. Some may be, and I fully understand that sentiment, but personally I couldn’t care less…

…it’s just that with the personal importance I place on Star Wars, I look at the upcoming release and think, “Sorry, I’m just not interested.”

Well, that was pretty much everything that’s been going through my head recently. I’m sure it made little sense overall, but hopefully there’s someone out there who can see what I’m trying to say and maybe it’ll let that person know that even the “fanboys” are on your side on this one.

It was a joke...

...the idea that Lucasfilm would be unable to make a decent cover because they're on the verge of bankruptcy and can't afford a capable artist... joke.

And from what I understand, WoTC is actually doing kinda alright (as far as a pen & papaer RPG company can do alright in the unstable market that exists for such things these days). Palladium on the other hand... they're gonna be gone by the end of the year.

Well, the RPG was published by Wizards of the Coast... who, thanks to the millions of 12 year olds playing "Magic: The Obsessing", has more money than God. So hiring Struzan for that cover was easy enough for them.

As we all know, however, Lucasfilm has been on the verge of bankruptcy for decades.

And if anybody tells you different, they're lying. I swear.
