OP, I have no idea what you’re talking about; the world is going to end in a ZOMBIE APOCALYPSE. Haven’t you seen Walking Dead?

Seriously, I’ll be sorely disappointed if I live my whole life without some kind of apocalyptic event happening. Zombies, widespread nuclear war, airborne Ebola, anything. Ideally when I’m about 35 years old. I’d like to survive the opening salvo but none of my family, friends or loved ones can so that during my adventures I have to make new acquaintances and can also have a chip on my shoulder and not talk much. Basically The Road Warrior.

I have a feeling I’m going to die disappointed.

What is your preferred browser? For Mobile; for Desktop? Why?
Time

Generally speaking, Chrome, because it’s on my work computer and I don’t feel like bothering the tech guy to install anything else.

For mobile (iOS 8.something, iPhone 6) I use different browsers for different things. I use safari for quickly looking stuff up, iCabMobile for downloading files, Dolphin for streaming audio, and Mercury for reading long articles which require my full attention. I guess my favorite would have to iCabMobile; it has served me well for years.

How Does Princess Leia Remember Her Mother in Return of the Jedi?
Time

There’s no way around this one; it’s a plot hole created by the prequels. I think what happened is that Lucas started running out of time at the end of RotS and had to cram everything in so that it was all in place for the next film, Star Wars. If he had written the prequels with a little more attention to detail and better planning he could have avoided this dilemma altogether.

I regret my first post here in the megathread requesting an invite to myspleen. I should have just not posted that and waited till I had been active in the forums a little longer. Now my post is lost a few pages back and not likely to get noticed. Oh well, I’ll survive

I’m glad you stuck around. I dislike when people just ask for an invite and dip. If you still need an invite, hmu.

Well the reality is I should have joined the forums ages ago when I stumbled upon it while searching for Star Wars stuff, but for some reason I didn’t.

Thanks, I got a PM with an invite though so I’m set (big thanks to the person who sent it!).

Extreme Prequel Plot Holes And Inconsistencies

I’ll start. Obi-Wan doesn’t remember owning R2 in the OT yet owns him in the prequels.

I never had a problem with this from either the PT or OT perspective. Obi-wan holds his cards close to his chest and has no problem leaving out vital details of Luke’s relation to Darth Vader, so it’s totally in character for him to conceal recognition of R2 and C-3PO. He doesn’t lie, after all; he only says he doesn’t remember owning any droids, not “I’ve never seen that droid in my life.”

What was your impression of the prequels before they announced the PT?
Time

I don’t know why but I never really thought about it in depth. I spent more time imagining what the post-RotJ galaxy would be like. What would the Jedi Order come to look like? Would Han and Leia have a child, multiple children or no children? How would the New Republic deal with the remnants of the Empire and how would the new Jedi Order fit into that effort? I asked these and more questions and spent a lot of time thinking of answers.

As far as the BBY time period, Kenobi’s reference to his friendship with Luke’s father was pretty much enough for me. I accepted that they were good friends just like my childhood friends and now Vader is the bad guy. As far as the Clone Wars references, I think I just imagined some long-past war spanning multiple planets in which lots of Jedi fought. I don’t think I even considered who the actual participants were.

UFO's & other anomalies ... do you believe?
Time

DuracellEnergizer said:

Do I believe other sapient species exist out there in the universe? Yes. Do I believe they have interstellar travel and have visited Earth? I’m doubtful.

Yes, exactly. This is my main issue with the idea that they’ve visited earth.

For them to have made the great trip here they would have to either A) live extremely long lives, much longer than anything on earth or B) invented faster-than-light travel, which is a monstrous obstacle.

On the other hand, any civilization which is capable of FTL travel would almost certainly be able to conceal themselves from us somehow. Maybe some of the UFO/UAP encounters out there are instances of them making a mistake and allowing themselves to be detected. Generally, I tend to default to the simplest explanation- they’ve never been here because we’re too damn far and we ain’t worth visiting.

Which reminds of the notion that if extraterrestrials ever did come here it would mean the end of humanity because they’d be here to strip our resources away. Please… any species that can accomplish interstellar travel doesn’t need the stuff we have.

Thanks, very interesting article. It reminded me of my only experience with a UAP that I’ll try to describe:

I was on the Big Island (Hawaii) and a buddy and I were laying on the roof of a structure staring into the sky, admiring the blanket of stars that attracts astronomers from around the planet (Mauna Kea has some of the most advanced telescopes and sensors in the world). We were at 6400’ above sea level on the plateau between Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa. We saw some shooting stars, planes and things that looked like satellites passing by overhead. Then one of the small moving lights which I was following suddenly got intensely bright, for perhaps 10-12 seconds, then dimmed and continued on its way.

It was bizarre because we both noticed it and we couldn’t figure out what it might be. Certainly not a comet (too slow), shooting star (too slow) or plane (too high up). Before it got bright it just looked like a little star moving across the sky and I assumed it was a satellite. I’ve never seen a satellite get bright like that before.

I don’t know if extraterrestrial life has visited this planet, but I have and always will believe that there is life elsewhere in the universe. I think the chances are much smaller that there isn’t other life, given the size of the system. I’ll never know what that bright light was but it certainly made for good conversation.

If you need to compliment or praise something... this is the place
Time

I’m thankful that my wife’s little Pomeranian, Riley, is responding well to his hypothyroidism medication and insulin. His hair, which had been thinning and falling out, has finally started growing back! I’d like to take this opportunity to praise his vet Lisa who has done an excellent job diagnosing and treating him. Our previous vet basically told us she didn’t know what was wrong with him but luckily Doc Lisa was able to tell us that he has hypothyroidism and diabetes which ultimately rendered him blind a few weeks ago. But he’s doing much better now… besides running into things all the time.

I succeeded in liking the Phantom Menace at the cinema. I knew that it was some kind of a forced love (which Lucas trumped with Anakin vs. Padme one movie later). But I kinda liked it.

Then the DVD arrived and everything got worse. The pacing was off (an already too long race got longer) and some CG scenes surrounding the pod race got longer and more embarrassing. That was the moment when I knew that Lucas himself got off the track. I didn’t know about the special edition changes back then.

Interesting, that’s what happened to me too. Then again, when I saw TPM in theaters I was nine years old. But until today I never knew there was a difference between the theatrical release and what was on DVDs. I guess I should have expected that though.

That’s not an alternative curse word…at least not the way you’re using it.

Well, in my original post I substituted lame for the curse word I really meant. I guess I’m not used to Star Wars-related forums where it’s okay to curse. Here’s what I should have said:

I will typically describe something that is fucking retarded as “soft.”

The factory scene is much longer, has a flying R2D2, and C3PO making shitty joke after shitty joke. No way is it better than any Grievous scene.

Funny, that’s one of the 2 scenes I like from AOTC 😃 The second one being the arena sequence (before the Jedi arrive)

Hmm… I can’t think of a single scene I actually enjoyed in the whole film. I tried, again

How did you first see the Star Wars films?
Time

I got lucky- I was born in '89 so when the OT was re-released in theaters in the late 90s I got to see them on the silver screen for my first viewing. It was almost like being a kid in the late 70s - early 80s, or at least for me it was because up until that point I hadn’t had much exposure to TV or films at all and Star Wars just blew my mind. So it went something like this:

ANH- in theaters, sometime in February of '97 (wow, I’ve been a SW fan for 20 years)
ESB- in theaters, shortly thereafter
RotJ- in theaters, shortly thereafter
TPM- in theaters, midnight viewing on opening day
AotC- in theaters, midnight viewing on opening day
RotS- in theaters, midnight viewing on opening day
TFA- in theaters, 7:00 P.M. on the day before opening day (in Hawaii, midnight releases are shown at midnight EST which is 6 or 7 P.M. Hawaii time depending on DST)
R1- in theaters, 7:00 P.M. on the day before opening day
TLJ- I’ll see it in theaters at midnight like all the rest, and I no longer live in Hawaii so it will actually be at midnight

A few notes:
I remember being scared out of my mind at the end of RotJ when the lightning came out of Palpatine’s hands. I ran out of the theater and watched from the crack in the door. Hey, I was seven.
I remember liking TPM when I first saw it at 9 years old, so well done Lucas, you pleased your target audience. By the time AotC came out I was already sick of TPM and aware of its inferiority to the OT. Episodes II and III did not redeem it, and I only saw each film once in theaters and didn’t watch them again for years.
Though the first versions I watched were the Special Editions, I distinctly remember watching an old VHS set dozens of times after I saw them in theaters. That old VHS set was NOT the Special Edition, and years later when I bought the DVDs I remember thinking “what the hell is this crap?”

Edit: I also will never forget the audience’s reaction to Yoda fighting Palpatine in RotS (edit to the edit: it was actually Yoda v. Dooku in AotC). The entire audience literally started laughing out loud at how ridiculous it looked. I didn’t really know how to react.

Edit 2: like Bobby above, I also remember the burst of applause when the opening crawl first started in TPM. Man, what a waste.

What’s worse, Facebook or Youtube comments? 😉

Youtube comments for sure. There you can use an alias.

Yes, definitely YouTube comments. I try to avoid even reading them for my own health.

The Worst Star Wars Characters
Time

TV’s Frink said:

Ratio Tile said:

TPM Anakin, AotC Anakin, RotS Anakin

This is almost a thread idea, but it will work here…

Which of these is the worst Anakin?

That’s a tough call. I’m tempted to say TPM Anakin but then I think about how Christensen is an older actor and should have done a better job. I mean, whose fault is it that Little Annie was such a lame character? Certainly not the kid, he was like nine years old or something …then again, can Christensen even be blamed? He’s not an inherently bad actor (I don’t think, I’m not sure) so blame would fall on the writers, directors and whoever cast him for that particular role.

We’d have to have a solid definition of “worst Star Wars character.” If it means the one who most thoroughly failed to be even remotely interesting, believable, or consistent with himself in the OT, I’d have to go with AotC and RotS Anakin. I’m sure others can express it more eloquently than I can, but I just can’t imagine any of the PT Anakins turning into Darth Vader.

TPM Anakin, AotC Anakin, RotS Anakin, and Phasma.

Phasma doesn’t make sense towards the end of TFA. Why would she give up just because she has a blaster pointed at her head? If she’s some sort of hard core Stormtrooper she would have shown a little more resiliency. It doesn’t make sense for her character. She should have said screw you guys, shoot me, I’m not helping you.

Sometimes someone’s resolve crumbles when a blaster is pointed at them? And it would look nasty for our heroes to shoot her once she’s a prisoner in that situation anyway.

Agreed on both your points; people definitely cave when threatened with a blaster/gun to their head, and it would absolutely look bad for the heroes to go around shooting people in cold blood. I guess that highlights a huge philosophical difference between TFA and R1 (see: Andor shooting that dude in the back).

I just found it hard to believe that Phasma would be one of those people who cave. I kept thinking “maybe she has some ulterior motive and wants to escape SKB” and “an Imperial officer may have caved like that but her?!”
