General Star Wars Random Thoughts Thread
Time

...and so the Emperor Pope retired. I wonder, how many Star Wars fans feel affected?

For me he had at least one virtue: every time I saw him I tried not to giggle... stop that, he doesn't look like Palpatine, not a bit! :D That was my first thought when I first saw him... how awkward did I feel! Luckily I immediately discovered - thanks to the Internet - that people all over the world noticed the same (what a relief it was :D ).

Remember fondly Papa Ratzi, the only Palpatine-lookalike pope.

With all this recent talk about how charitable Lucas is, I hesitated to ask: where exactly did those 4 billion go? (maybe I missed it on the forum)

Children education you say. But wait, doesn't he have own foundations/organizations like "George Lucas Educational Foundation" or "Lucas Learning"?

Let's not forget the recent news: he got engaged (to a woman). Remember how the divorce with Marcia changed his views?

a boring show on history.

How can you have Indiana Jones without Harrison Ford, And Steven Spielberg, or John Williams

I don't want to start a discussion how I dislike the "young version of our hero" trick used by popular franchises (as much as improbable Superman sounds... then you get young Superman with a doggie?).

What was the problem was the very idea behind YIJ inception: for the show to be educational Indy must meet every single historical figure from that era. Too much of a stretch. It's just as ridiculous as Star Wars Expanded Universe: everyone meets everyone and everyone is famous (compare backgrounds of Mois Eisley cantina patrons!).

EDIT to add: I'm sure I'm in a very small minority of SW fans on this, but I am honestly sick of the Jedi.

"You have my axe..." (oh wait, wrong trilogy! :D )

I admit the most likable character was Han. Why? Dry humor and common sense ("hokey religions").

True, but let's face it, Star Wars is 35 year old, twentysomething girl who saw it in 1977 most likely has grandchildren by now.

Nevermind that, Maul looks like a tattooed freak "look mum, I'm a devil!". The amount of f/x makeup work on him is like from the old Star Trek... ("I've got something on my forehead, I look so alien now, noone will recognize me from my previous movies!")

The Lightsaber or the Jedi/Sithesque robes...

Oh, those Japane... err... Jedi robes, yes. That must be the thing. But wasn't that originally used for Kenobi/Vader?

Dress up as Maul and show up next to some religious grannies... I'll bet they'll greet you with "apage, satanas!", not "may the Force be with you" :D

Honestly, average Twi'lek looks more starwars-ish than the utterly boring Maul, who looks like another escaped convict/pervert/alt guitarist, "I have genital piercings too!".

Darth Maul is probably as recognisably Star Warsian as Boba Fett or Jabba.

Whenever I see him on a product I wonder how people are able to associate him with Star Wars, c'mon, he looks like a tattooed guy with horns, a generic devil/demon wannabe... or maybe he dressed up for a German gay parade?

Wasn't that horned Devaronian in the cantina a little bit similar?

On the other hand, I do admit Bobba also looks "generic sci-fi", a typical action-man toy.

More movies? Non-SW? Okay, but...

...the last LFL movie I enjoyed was ...from 1980s. (haven't seen Radioland Murders, is it any good?)

I'm an aviation fan, so I looked forward to Red Tails, and what a disappointment it was. Their CGI division should be tied to a chair and forced to watch WW2 documentaries, aircraft dogfight guncams or even a damned Red Bull Air Race, anything, so that they finally learn how to make aerial sequences. Even 1927 Wings was better! (yes, I watch such stuff)

I'm sorry, it's not my blog or from anyone that I know.

My comment wasn't aimed at you. It was just a reminder to not to believe everything that's written on the Internet, because anyone can write on the Internet, and the subject is very hot at the moment. I too can create a blog and write "a source close to Lucas, yet asking to remain anonymous for obvious reasons, reports that RRS-1980 was contacted regarding planned yet-unnamed LucasArts space combat sim", and because last few words are a genuine rumor, it suddenly looks believable, yay!

Today's CGI can look fairly well (I'm not talking explosions, where I'd still use models) - it is the fault of poor art directing. Modern CGI can successfully fake CRT scanlines and analog computer displays of 1980s. It just takes knowledge, skill and dedication.

Yes. This is something in the Star Wars universe I've sorely missed since X-Wing, TIE Fighter, and Dark Forces:

REBELLION VS. EMPIRE.

This is the backdrop of Star Wars... yet I feel it hasn't been seen/addressed in 20 years. Or if it has, it was done terribly (Force Unleashed). I want to see the formation of the Rebellion. I want to see this small rag-tag group slowly grow in strength in the years prior to IV. I want to see what they were doing between IV and V. Man, the force and Jedi are cool and all, but I really want to see more of the military conflict.

Playing those LucasArts game and pretending I was a pilot/trooper in a massive galactic civil war is what got me back into Star Wars as a teenager in the early 90s.

If you could find my posts here written about 10 years ago, you'd see we're thinking the same thing.

Star Wars is a science-fantasy (not traditional hard sci-fi) with a WAR in the backdrop. While Lucas had Vietnam in mind when he made ROTJ, those starfighter combat sequences are made after World War 2 guncams & movies, and it shows (relative motion speed, lasers instead of long-range autoaiming missiles etc.). This was one of the reasons I'm so into SW, because I'm also into military history, and when it comes to aviation, WW2 and 1930s are my #1.

Interesting how the "point of sitting" defines the "point of view". The Vietnam war never came to my mind when watching Star Wars (OK, maybe only during the ROTJ jungle fight with Ewoks). It's quite natural for a person with European background to see Rebel Alliance as the resistance movement fighting against the Nazi Germany, using "hit and run" tactics, captured weapons, infiltration, espionage etc. Many of those Bothans died to bring us the V-1 plans, right?

Yet Star Wars can remain militaristic safely without real world problems (no stormtroopers raping women or Imperial officers sending children to gas chambers, my Grandma wasn't chased by TIE Bomber, but Ju 87 Stuka) or appearing homoerotic (like most pro-army propaganda: "join us, merry muscular men!").

Jedi knights were supposed to be an elite, a small group. We were shown old Kenobi, who despite his age retained charm and sense of humor - and that made him cool and composed.

Even before Prequels which made many of us hate the Jedi, the fans themselves made me sick of the Jedi order, with their dress-ups, fan-fics etc.

I understand that most people want to play as a Jedi, but if we were allowed a choice in 1990s, why can't I get a game today sans Jedi?

Think Elite/Frontier, Wing Commander: Privateer, X series... each had a cult following. It's impossible that a game like this set in Star Wars universe wouldn't catch on - LucasArts lost this big opportunity!

I used to buy all those very expensive (where I live) LucasArts games... but that was over 10 years ago.

I dont see anything that compels me to this sequel trilogy

If it was made in 1980s, people would flock to it even if it only contained Luke/Hamill, Leia/Fisher and Han/Harrison dancing around the fire (Holiday Special anyone?), as they were the beloved heroes.

Now we'd be considered lucky if it'll be possible to squeeze-in Leia for a cameo.

Otherwise we'll get different (younger) actors, which makes it look&feel like a reboot or a fan-movie.

Let's face it: the last moment for making a Star Wars (or Indiana Jones) sequel was early 1990s.

Now, there was a chance for a quality LFL product. The live-action series. If it was made using "few episodes per story" formula (NOT "episode per story" or "neverending soap opera") and telling us the tales of unknown heroes (Rebel spies & pilots, bounty hunters etc.) with only short cameos of major characters (they made young J.Bridges for TRON; Vader & Palpatine didn't age), space war drama ESB-style (Rebels on the run), it would be a big hit (with both fans and the Average Joe) and I'd be Lucas fan again (just like 2 decades ago).

But there was noone in LFL willing & able to create such series.

I've often wondered why I (and millions of others) have such a fascination with Star Wars

Fantasy such as Star Wars, Lord of the Rings or even Harry Potter (eek!) works like a drug for escapists. Watching a movie where Pacino sells drugs in Miami may be excitement for some, but will be a reminder of a grim reality to others. Those others want to relax by going for a hollidays to a neverland.

This is exactly why fans are so vocal when someone (well, not just someone, but the creator himself) poisons their good memories/emotions of their favorite neverland. They felt safe at home there, now this guy enters that home, changes/destroys things and says "it was mine from the beginning, so shut up and don't complain".

I doubt they'd have anything for Carrie Fischer to do.

Quite on the contrary. Luke as a Master - yes, but also with Leia as a mature politician. No longer a feisty princess, but somebody like Angela Merk... um, I mean: Mon Mothma :D

There's no place for Han Solo: when you get married (+kids?) it's too late to be a space vagabond, not to mention his age. Maybe he really should be only reminded as a hero of the new Republic who died in some battle. Chewie with him.

But hey, if they had cut Mon Mothma from the E3, don't expect anything serious from E7.

The biggest question is: who'll be the new threat? Yet another Sith popping up like a devil from a box? Boring! Even badder aliens? Not very starwarsish! At any rate the plot will be like second-rate EU stuff.

Star Wars story ended with Episode 6. No sequel trilogy should ever be made. If you liked stuff like Zahn's books, similar story could be told via live-action mini-series, the movies were always about our heroes, who got so old they'd retired by now.
