If GL changed his mind about releasing OUT, but with a few tweaks.....
Time

I don't want another non-OUT edition out there because it will see the consequence that the OUT won't get released!

Once a harmful SE gets out, there won't be any public pressure to release the OUT.

If anybody wants an edition with updated effects he can watch the SE all the time, avaiable in bluray.

Lucasfilm would satisfy/reach more people with simple high quality releases of the OUT. If you wanna watch the original, you wanna watch the original right?

I would ask for all theatrical soundmixes as hairy_hen, selectable in main menu: 70mm edition, 35mm edition,...  I see no problem at all with seamless branching. They may not forget about foreign countries who had 70mm mixes as well like germany! I never heard it but read it sounds breathtaking.

The real reason behind this thread is, that most of us share the opinion that the SE as it is now, is unwatchable. Well, all you can do about it, don't buy the blu rays or go to the 3D cinema viewings of them. If you wanna do more, you can always start public relations (doing a homepage, blog, writing articles, letters, telling friends,...).

This is the only way to get the point to GL and the legal successors of the films.

I am still full of questions about the dvd/bluray colors, why did we get an almost new color palette in 2004 for the SE?

  • GL thinks the colors are like in 77/80/83
  • GL thinks the colors should have looked like this in 77/80/83
  • it is due to the rush process in 2004 and GL didn't want to invest any money for fixing colors in the blu rays.
  • it is due to the rush process in 2004 and GL now began to like them - will even use them as reference for future releases

Preserving the "German" Original Trilogy (Released)
Time

Well, until my LD-Player arrives I can only support you with AVI files snapshots of the 1993 LDs.

I think they are 1.5GB per Movie releases, so not too bad quality, but not too good as well. Want me to share snapshots?

If I remember right german home video releases always had yellow subtitles. It seems possible that the tv-channel Sat.1 got a master with burned in subtitles, so they possibly match the german prints.

Project Status:

  • LD-Player on its way.
  • German LD collection will be complete as well.

Hi Karyudo!

Great to hear about this.

As far as I know in 1993 only pre-THX discs were released in PAL countries. Are you sure those contain high quality video?

I bought a Pionner CLD-2950 PAL player last week, it should arrive soon. I am planning on doing a german preservation project. However I will be using the GOUT as main video source. Only opening crawl, end titles, alien subtitles and PCM audio will be taken from the german discs.

Remember the GOUT only features the english crawl.

Star Wars coming to Blu Ray (UPDATE: August 30 2011, No! NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!)
Time

Just a mini update:

  • SW4-6 blu rays don't have any easter eggs but plenty of Gigabyte free
  • ROTJ: During the Vader throws down Palpatine scene (which is critisized the most in this release) GL talks in the audio commentary about how you can read his emotions from the mask. It's such ironical.

Didn't have the interest to watch the prequels yet.

It will be interesting to see how the vintage documentaries will look as Adywan source said they do come from old VHS/Laserdisc masters from the 80's/90's. Interlaced SD content, not prepared to be viewed on progressive (HD) displays. Such effort definately deserves THX blu ray disc certificate *sarcastic*.

Star Wars Blu-ray: First to feature THX Media Director

http://www.pocket-lint.com/news/41948/star-wars-blu-ray-thx-media-director

The forthcoming Star Wars Blu-rays will be the first discs to feature THX Media Director, the company's audio and video calibration metadata that tells compatible TVs, home cinema systems and projectors what settings to choose for an optimum theatre-style experience.

*OMIT*

Unfortunately, however, at present it is unlikely that you own a TV, AV amplifier or projector that can read the data. Compatible kit is not due until later this year, although major manufacturers do have products in the pipeline: "We've already announced deals with JVC, LG and Epson with their high-end projectors, and there's going to be more coming down the line," said Dean.

*OMIT*

Thanks for the info none. But how good is such a system if the content sucks? F*cked up colors stay f*cked up colors, it doesn't matter if your display device is calibrated manually or by this system.

I don't trust THX as product quality company anymore. I did in the past, but they did an awful job til this very day.

  • SW 1993 Definitive Collection - heavy DVNR
  • Titanic DVD - non anamorphic
  • Star Wars Ep 1 DVD - pink tint & EE
  • Star Wars 2004 OT DVDs - f*cked up colors, crushed blacks
  • Star Wars 1 Bluray - DNR & wax effect
  • Star Wars OT Bluray - f*cked up colors, crushed blacks again
  • Star Wars 6 Bluray - for ~30min the picture is out of focus and looks like a SD-upscale

@adywan: thanks for sharing those snapshots!

I have to agree that that there is too much softness in the cgi-free regions of the picture. Definately overfiltered! Like the Definitive collection in 1993, like the OT in 2004.

It would be interesting to know if that wax-look was already in the digital master from 1999 or if it is a result of filtering done for this blu-ray only.

If you ask me, at this resolution the cgi looks even more fake. People placed on the frame like done with copy & paste.

Will watch Episode I or III 1080p CHD tonight and will do a report after that.

Just read this on jeditemplearchives.com;

Latest Star Wars Saga DVDs Recalled? No Longer An Opportunity To Buy?

We have learned of a rumor. Please take this with a grain of salt until more in confirmed, but one of our readers has attempted to purchase some of the currently available Star Wars films on DVD. He was informed by a Walmart employee that all have been recalled. I have also not been able to find any in stock at the moment. Have we all missed the boat trying to grab the current versions? Does this mean that forever our beloved films will have Ewoks blinking? Could Lucasfilm, Ltd. be futilely trying to get rid of remaining existing versions of the Star Wars saga? More on this later as the story develops. But let us know if your experiences are different.

Link: http://www.jeditemplearchives.com/content/modules.php?name=News&file=article&sid=8447

Interesting. But this doesn't compute with Lucasfilm reasoning why the DVD Special Features haven't been carried over. They all say, the blu ray boxset is intended as addon, not replacement.

It's a shame that the text commentaries from dvd.starwars.com haven't been carried over to this set. The dvd.starwars.com page is down since 2006. The text commentaries are gone. :(

There were script to screen commentaries for ep 1-5 and depth commentaries for ep1-3 online.

I once saved both commentaries from Ep1 in their original html format. I have posted the Depth C. in 2010 @ a.b.starwars. The html can be used to create dvd/br compatible subtitles. If anyone is interested pm me.

I was just watching ROTJ again and one thing i noticed is that a whole section of the movie looks almost out of focus. Anyone who has the blu-ray rips just check the part where the Tydirium is approaching Endor. It lasts until around the speeder bike chase. It's the same on the HDTV 2004 version too. It is such a huge drop in image clarity it looks almost DVD upscaled. Compare it to the rest of the movie and you will see what i mean.

EDIT you can check out just how different it is here:

http://screenshotcomparison.com/comparison/77705

http://screenshotcomparison.com/comparison/77706

Watched ROTJ, bluray 720p CHD release, on a projector and have to agree. Even my friend, who doesn't catch such things noticed the quality break. This is a big issue actually. I would even go as far as this disc needs replacement!!!

Can anyone, who has the blu ray ISO image, verify that it's on the original Disc as well?

Star Wars coming to Blu Ray (UPDATE: August 30 2011, No! NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!)
Time

Just want to share my thoughts on the new ESB audio commentary, that is contained on the new blu rays.

I listened to the whole thing now. It is really interesting, some nice background information. How much of the information is new to you depends on your knowledge about Star Wars of course.

Alec Guiness is there once, Harrison Ford once or twice, Frank Oz three times, Gary Kurtz one or two times, Billy Dee Williams once, Peter Mayhew ~ 3 times, Murren a few times, Mark Hamill a few times, ...

Mostly talking persons are Kershner, Burtt, Lucas, Fisher.

My impression is 60% is unused footage from the audio commentary, done for the 2004 dvds. The rest is sampled together. Nothing seems to be new stuff - it's from the archives.

It's sad that there is no subtitle information about the time the interview has been done. Carry Fisher is talking about how wonderful they have added the clouds there, but since there is a OOT and a SE, you can't be sure if she is talking about the artwork from 1980 or 1997. You have to rime everything together yourself. She is refering to the picture she is just seeing, so it's probably from the audio commentary of 2004. It would have been a lot easier, if the year of the interview has been provided like in "Building Empire". It's easy for Carry Fisher but not that easy for all the snippets.

Gary Kurtz is talking about white snow / Blue snow right in the first minutes. They intend to have white snow! They even were afraid that any temperature changes would make the white snow blue.

GL is talking during the Vader is father reveal scene how different the experience is if you watch it 1-6 instead of 4-6, 1-3. That part is interesting to hear.

Burtt is sometimes really boring when he talks about each of the sounds origin. Some of his talk was nice however.

After seeing the german ESB blu ray (~42gb) at home i must say I like the menu, I watched the first 15min of the new commentary which was really interesting, even alec guiness is speaking there.

Well, they didn't go back to the original name in the crawl Krieg der Sterne but used Star Wars like on the 2004 DVDs. That's bad for original trilogy fans.

I dislike that the english dts track is not dts hd master, and it only features 768 kbit instead of possible 1536 kbit.

There is no easter egg on this blu-ray disc, I did go through the streamlist directory directly to check that.

German audio sounded good so far but I didn't really watched the whole movie yet.

'Legacy' by X0-1138 - a fake and trolling 'project'
Time

I totally agree. Doing the project in smaller steps is the best way to go.

Zion [X0 project team] only released a raw capture from ANH so far. If I remember correct Zion didn't even get the complete ROTJ capture from MeBeJedi, missing one Laserdisc side.

The community is still missing:

X0 - raw capture of Definitive Collection Ep5 & Ep6
X0 - raw capture of JSC trilogy
X0 - raw capture of supplemental material (1993, 1995, 1997, 2000)
X0 - raw capture of 'from starwars to jedi'

raw capture means uncompressed video (codecs like huffyuv), audio can be supplied by others if necessary.

There are so few that have access to this outstanding player, even fewer having the knowledge how to capture laserdiscs with it.

If you release the raw capture, others can jump in and sync digital audio to them, make uncompressed 24fps progressive masters and rerelease them for the next masering step, which would be cleanup...

What capture card are you using?

1. Wasn't there a rumor that the stormtroopers have been re-dubbed by Temuera Morrison? I didn't catch any dialog changes yet, did you?

2. OT A/V quality issues

I don't get it how people can find this release to be of good video quality. I could only think of the increased resolution, that let people buy this like there is no tomorrow.

The good thing about this is: for the next bluray release Lucasfilm will have to think of something else to get 'general' people to buy it.

General viewer don't care about colors, don't care about lightsaber colors, garbage mattes, small cgi-enhancements, audio changes.

Damn it, I found the answer myself: it will be 3D experience. So no need to fix anything, not even for the next blu ray release. :-(

The only hope is a single-movie release with OUT in HD as bonus.

Star Wars coming to Blu Ray (UPDATE: August 30 2011, No! NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!)
Time

There is different kind of information on changes depending which site/forum you go to. I am concentrating on the stuff that I couldn't detect in my 1080p versions.

www.starwars-union.de (german site) reports stuff like:

- Blue Filter on Hoth got reduced

- Obi Wan Ghost on Hoth can be seen a lot clearer now

- Lightsabers got fixed and are now shiny red and blue, with white cores

- Leia Hologram is more blue

http://www.thedigitalbits.com/ reacted to the official confirm from Lucasfilm on the "Noooo".

On a positive note, it sounds like the A/V quality of these discs is excellent on the whole (at least according to the guys in Europe and China who have apparently gotten their hands on factory-leaked discs. ... As expected, numerous (though not all) picture and sound defects in these films have apparently been corrected. But while it's three steps forward in quality, it may be two and a half back for more changes.

 thedigitalbits.com

How can this release be of excellent A/V quality if the video is not a bit different than the 2004 hd master? I am talking about the crushed blacks, oversaturation, contrast-boost, color-timing issues, lightsaber colors.

Numerous picture defects have been corrected? No! We got two half-hearted lightsaber shots (not scenes!) fixed.

Three steps forward in quality? Where exactly?

This thing is 95% the 2004 hd master. 3% difference for less compression artefacts in a/v, 2% difference for content changes.

Well just watched ESB. No changes that i could spot other than the Wampa arm. Same old crappy 2004 colouring with the blown out detail in the bright areas in Cloud city.  They haven't touched one lightsabre by the looks of things although i would have to run it side by side with the 2004 version to confirm it, but i'm 99% sure that this is the case. Same dull cores and pink lightsabres. The audio is the same as 2004. the lightsabre sound is still there as Luke exits the cave, yet the lightsabre is still activated.

So far it seems that there has been a lot of Bullshit coming from Lucasfilm about the work done on these blu-rays

I'm going to leave Jedi until later on. need some sleep now as it's 5:20am here now. This is the film i am most dreading watching after the few changes noted so far.

I watched the ESB 720p CHD release on my netbook during night and have to agree on the general colors. Identical to 2004.

But in some scenes the lightsabers look liked worked on - but in a bad way. All promotional material - think of purple lightsaber from Vader at 'there is no escape' - is exactly like that on those blu rays. Lightsabers felt different than in 2004, but even worse!
On the outside from pink, rose, light purple, dark purple, light red, dark red, light blue, dark blue.
The saber core from white to rose, pink, red, light blue, dark blue
Size: changing from scene to scene between thin and thick.
It's awful to watch, instead of paying attention to the story I was distracted and started to laugh on the PQ.

Edit: removed some link.

Star Wars coming to Blu Ray (UPDATE: August 30 2011, No! NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!)

Having found the answer why the blu ray still have the same odd colors and wrong lightsabers:

"A lot of things that look a little different on HD or DVD are really the nature of how video treats color space."

It's as simple as this. There is no workaround for this. -sarcastic- again

Some quotes from the now famous restoration article on sw.com:

With the ... release on ... Blu-ray disc ..., a release that required meticulous optimization of picture and sound.

I don't buy this. This doesn't look like meticulous optimization of picture.

However, that is not to say that that work done for the 2004 release was simply ported over to Blu-ray.

No simple port? I don't buy this! What exactly was done to the video? I am not talking about content changes as a restoration articles should neither.

"It went through three phases of QC (quality control) processes," describes Diane Caliva, Production Manager for Media Operations at ILM.

After seeing the CHD video samples and snapshots I can only laugh on the 3 phases of quality control.

There are a handful of such technical shot corrections in addition to the cleanups throughout the films.

I buy it that you only made a handful (that is basically not more than 5) of technical shot corrections througout the films. With cleanup they probably only mean dirt removal and corrections of blemishes and warping on the image.
