Episode VII: The Force Awakens - Discussion * SPOILER THREAD *
Time

The novelization is apparently filling in some holes left from the film along with some new things not seen in the movie- (thanks to Darth_Monopoly for the following post)-

The opening is Leia wondering where Luke is and trying to call out to him that she needs him.

-Snoke mentions having seen the Empire rise and fall. If that was in the movie then I missed it.

-Leia is informed of the FO’s attack on Jakku and Poe’s assumed death. She is upset and does not want the FO to find Luke before they do. She knows that BB-8 is still missing so she asks 3PO to activate his tracker to find him. She then sends her envoy to the Senate in the Hosnian system to ask for help, explaining that she cannot go herself because while she still has friends there she would likely have an unfortunate “accident” because many there do not like her.

-There is a scene with 3PO talking to the low power R2 where he is basically talking to himself but asking what R2 would do, because he forgot to activate BB-8’s tracker before he left on the mission. He decides to send a message to all active Resistance droids to be on the lookout for BB-8.

-We get a scene of Poe waking up after the crash. He has a concussion and it turns out that he got out of the TIE after crash landing it and wandered away before collapsing and it’s just bad luck that Finn didn’t find him. There’s a whole sequence where he meets a scavenger who decides to help him and then they are attacked by other scavengers and Poe pilots a speeder showing off his skills again to get away.

-Unkar Plutt finds Rey at Maz’s Castle. He found them because he had a homing device on the Falcon. Rey tries to use her blaster on him but the safety is on. Chewie intervenes and tears Plutt’s arm off. It’s at this point that a droid sees BB-8 and sends a message to the Resistance.

-Then there’s a quick scene with 3PO receiving the message and informing Leia of BB-8’s whereabouts. These 3PO scenes are both good but I think I prefer his first appearance in the movie.

-A scene of Leia being informed of the the destruction of the Hosnian system and feeling the deaths of all the people in the Force. And she thinks about how no one should be subjected to the death of an entire world but she had been subjected to two and she would not allow it to happen again.

-Also, it’s not as easily seen in the sky above the Castle. That was one of my problems with the movie was that it made it appear that they were in the same system.

-Confirmed Han and Leia are husband and wife.

-General Hux launches something called seekers to take out the attacking X-Wings on Starkiller Base. He’s warned that they will take down TIEs too but he claims that collateral damage will be necessary to win.

-There’s a chase sequence involving the stolen snow speeder that Rey and Finn use to get to the oscillator.

-Kylo Ren removing his mask for Han is the first time Han has seen his son as a grown man. Also, Han debated leaving without confronting him but didn’t because he wanted to fulfill Leia’s request.

-Poe does not fly into the oscillator and there is no “trench run”. His pilots simply bomb the hole that the detonators exposed.

-Hux rescues Kylo Ren and could have taken Finn and Rey but there was no time and his instructions from Snoke took precedence. He assumed they would die there anyways.

-The doctor tells Rey that Finn will be fine although he is in a medically induced coma and nothing is certain until he fully recovers.

-R2 has the rest of the map because he catalogued the Imperial archives. He overheard a discussion of how Kylo Ren had said that they held the rest of the map because it was in the archives. He then powers up and displays the map.

-Rey has a conversation with Leia before she leaves where Leia promises her that she will not share the fate of her son.

-Rey extends the lightsaber towards Luke as an offer and a plea because he’s the galaxy’s only hope. She wonders what will happen next.

The new Star Wars comics - a general discussion thread

I was ordering the monthly issues of Star Wars, Vader & Leia but the postage was really starting to add up so I decided just to wait for the upcoming Collected Editions which are being released later this year-

I strongly prefer the Original Theatrical Versions of the Star Wars Trilogy over the Special Editions due to them being a big part of my childhood growing up but I see the comics differently then the films themselves and since I already have the Original Marvel Star Wars comics in the Omnibuses I would not have minded them changing the Jabba Docking Bay 94 in the remastered comic adaptation. When it comes to Star Wars comics we have a choice between the Original Versions collected in the Omnibuses and now the Remastered Versions since both are available, I just wished we had a choice when it comes to the Movies themselves.

I just got my Marvel Star Wars A New Hope Remastered OGN, Some new things I noticed was on page 110 where Tarkin is being told about evacuating the Death Star there has been a red 3D hologram of the Battle Station added next to a view screen. Also there is visible sand on the Stormtrooper's outfits who find the Droid's Escape Pod on Tatooine. Also the scene where Biggs is telling Luke about him joining the Rebellion outside Tosche Station now takes place at night instead of the day. The Explosion of the Death Star looks very different compared to the original, the shape of the explosion itself has been changed & there is now a praxis ring affect and finally Obi-Wan & Luke now have blue lightsabers! Overall I really like the new coloring format and loved the fact this Book does not have an annoying dust jacket However I kind of wished they would have updated the Jabba Docking Bay 94 scene with the actual likeness of the real Jabba and they should have changed Bail Antilles to Bail Organa. I'm going to be putting my Original Marvel Years Vol.1 Omnibus & this Book side by side and see if I can spot any more changes.

During the Marvel Panel Q&A at Celebration it was stated that there would be an adaptation of the TFA film later on after the films release and that Marvel does not do movie adaptations at the time of a movie's release, If I remember correctly in the past Marvel would release a movie adaptation before the film's debut, when did this change with Marvel, and what recent movie adaptations has Marvel done?

The Prequel Trilogy Films vs. The Novels.
Time

Getting ready to read the Novelizations of the Prequel Trilogy for the first time, Although I'm a huge fan of the (Non-Special Edition) Original Trilogy of films I was kind of disappointed with the Prequel films especially Episode 1. I've read some reviews of the Prequel Trilogy Novels from readers who say their better then the films themselves. If you have read them is this true?

I think Owen may have thought that Anakin should have stayed with him and Anakin's step-father and help them out with the moisture farm, after all Cliegg was married to Anakin's mother making Anakin a part of the Lars family and Cliegg even lost his leg looking for Shimi after the Sand People kidnapped her, Anakin could have been a big help for Cliegg and Owen on the farm.

Theres some good info about Owen Lars at the Star Wars.com Databank:

http://www.starwars.com/databank/character/owenlars/index.html

Apparently Owen thought Anakin should have stayed with his mother on Tatooine and not gotten involved with the Republic or the Jedi because of the affect Owen seen on his step-mother Shimi of being without Anakin.

Well that nice. Too bad Owen's thoughts aren't actually in the film and we need 3rd party source to clarify that.

I always thought there was some kind of big blowup between Owen and Obi-Wan offscreen, I imagined Obi-Wan bringing Anakin's Lightsaber to give too a young Luke but Owen refused and ran Obi-Wan off and told him to leave Luke alone and never come back. It would have been funny if Obi-Wan waved his hand at Owen and said "you will let me give Luke this Lightsaber" Owen: "I will let you give the Lightsaber to Luke." Obi-Wan: "oh, by the way you will let me sleep with Beru"

An older Owen did not want to see Luke leave Tatooine and possibly become a Jedi like his father because Owen feared that Luke may suffer the same fate as Anakin did. Also the Databank entry confirms an EU incident between Owen and Obi-Wan over young Luke, So I guess this confirms why Luke (in Episode 4) knows a Ben Kenobi but not an Obi-Wan Kenobi.

1997 Special Edition Restoration thoughts...
Time

There was speculation from the Digital Bits and other DVD news websites that there was going to be a Big 30th Anniversary 9 disc DVD box set released back in 07' but it was delayed due to poor sales of the 06' GOUT DVD sets. Some of the speculation was that there was going to be more changes to the movies and there was going to be a lot of new Bonus material included in this 30th Anniversary set. I think we'll probably see this Mega DVD box set released before any of the films are released on Blu-ray but then again the Digital Bit's sources have informed them that some of the Star Wars movies (probably only Episodes 1,2 and 3) may get a Blu-ray release next year.

I recently bought four Star Wars Trilogy DVD Box Sets (The 2006 OOT DVDs that were re-released last November) I now have four DVDs each of the original versions of the films, I gave the 2004 versions to my friend. I just don't think we'll ever see the OOT released on Blu-ray thats why I bought so many of these OOT DVDs. I know they don't look as clean or sharp as the 04' versions and thier not anamorphic but then again they certainly look better then any past VHS release and from what I've read they look better then any previous LD release.

Four? You know DVD's don't wear out, right? ;-)

I just made sure I would have enough because I really think this may be the last time will ever see the OOT officially released. I have a feeling that the OOT isn't going to be released on Blu-ray, only the new revised versions will.

An interesting thread from Blu-Ray.com (no Blu-Rays yet)
Time

With the Clone Wars animated movie and Indy 4 now on Blu-ray with the Clone Wars season 1 now comfirmed being released on Blu-ray and with the possibility of the 3 original Indy movies coming to Blu-ray by year's end, it seems like Lucasfilm is really starting to embrace the Blu-ray format. maybe we'll be seeing the 6 Star Wars films on Blu-ray sooner then we did on DVD.

A New Hope 2004 DVD's picture quality too dark?
Time

Does anyone else agree that the 2004 DVD version of Ep.4 A New Hope seems too dark (Picture Quality) in certain scenes like the Cantina, inside the Sandcrawler and on the Death Star? The other day I watched the Original 1977 version of A New Hope from the 2006 DVD set and the picture appears to be brighter then the 2004 DVD version. I have read on other web sites is that the reason for this is that in the past when movies were released on VHS and even LD they were artificially brightened to make them look better, is this true?
