Help Wanted: Rare Original IB Tech print of Alice in Wonderland (1950) Found!

It shocks and angers me at just how much these films have been tampered with. I can't wait to see the results of your efforts.

I agree. It's shameful what Disney has been doing to their "restorations". I've all but given up on collecting their blu-rays because of their lack of care. I do own Alice in Wonderland and this makes me sad.

Harmy's THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK Despecialized Edition HD - V2.0 - MKV & AVCHD (Released)
Time

I noticed earlier hairy_hen posted this:

"The '93 mix of ESB contains a few glitches, so I did a bit of restoration work on it since it was the primary source for the new 5.1.  This includes declipping, declicking, and noise removal, all with iZotope RX 3; as well as patching editing mistakes in the laserdisc source.  I shall therefore upload this corrected copy in AC3 form to be included in the MKV."

I'm assuming this corrected copy of the audio track is already muxed into the corrected v2 mkv on spleen? Is this correct?

Alien/Aliens Color Regrade (a WIP)
Time

Glad to see these 2 films getting some attention. The blu-ray colors are very annoying. I must say thought that for Aliens, the laserdisc colors are way too red/orange especially with facial tones. Everybody looks like they have a severe case of sunburn with the bright orange hue. The blu-ray went way too far with the teal, but the laserdisc is too warm to my eyes.

I don't hate the character. The line in ROTJ is the problem.

Clearly it's not just me.

You insinuated that Leia was possibly somewhat unlikeable due to her actions and I replied that you'd be the only one I had heard of ever having THAT issue. I never said you were the only one having an issue with the "incest situation"......I simply provided a counter argument, and stated that I personally never saw it the same way or had any problem with it.

Not so.

The problem with Leia begins and ends in ROTJ.

Up until that point the character and the audience thought Luke was a nice guy who she might become romantically involved with. She just ended up preferring the scoundrel over the hero.

I love the character. She's a complicated girl, letting Chewie choke Lando and choking Jabba demonstrates their is more than a little of her dad in her but I don't think she is playing games with Luke's affections at that point. Neither of them know they are siblings (the writer didn't even know). She might have ended up with him if he wasn't.

The problem with that kiss comes from that line, not from the character. It's an utterly bonkers thing to say in the context of what's gone before.

Put yourself in her shoes for a moment.

She has just discovered the guy who tortured her and her boyfriend and was partly responsible for the destruction of her home planet is her best friend's dad.

She then finds out that he is her brother so that means Vader is her dad as well and on top of all that...

That's a whole bowl of scrambled heads there.

And she says she somehow always knew???

Seriously??

You can almost see little Anakin's TPM declaration of love for Padme or AOTC's creepy sex looks over the horizon after that bit of shifty dialogue.

It's a problem caused in ROTJ so it needs fixing in that film not in ESB which is faultless. It's bad enough Leia has little to do in that film but to paint her as sexually weird is kind of letting the character down.

When she said she "always knew" she meant deep down there was something inside that she felt was different with Luke - something that felt like a bond much more deep than just friendship. She was not trained in the Force and therefore didn't know how to tap that knowledge or how to understand what those feelings meant, but deep down, she sensed a connection. Hence the "somehow".

I thought that was obvious by how she said it. I never had a problem with that line.

Hilarious, in a depressing sort of way. This is now the only version I need unless they can manage to release a new mastered version with proper color timing and no DNR.

So I saw a commercial last night that reminded me of this thread: they're making curved televisions now!

Yeah, Samsung is hoping that will be the next gimmick that catches on> I doubt it will. It sounds cool but I bet it causes issues. Gaming might have issues such as straight lines now appearing curved, causing distortion. I'd like to see one in-store but I bet people will be hesitant to pick these curved screens up. Samsung is fixing something that isn't broken.

Who knows if this set will have the unaltered Mono mix this time, but either way, official release of the Halloween 6 Producer's Cut!!!

It does claim the original mono track is being added. But I guess the only way to know for sure is to find out when it gets released. Sounds like an amazing set, but honestly I love the [spoRv] version of Halloween - the coloring is more appealing to me than the newest remaster with the lack of color. The original blu-ray was too saturated. This new set seems to say it will contain both, which is pretty interesting actually.

Supernova (2000) [spoRv] *BD-25* RELEASED
Time

Sorry to be the bringer of bad news yesterday, but I'm glad to hear you're doing a re-do. This movies deserves it I believe. Interesting about the patch they used that even appears on the DVD - it's funny, the things you don't notice on DVD but do in HD. Well I look forward to your corrected version and thanks a ton for keeping us informed here of the progress!

Supernova (2000) [spoRv] *BD-25* RELEASED
Time

So I finally got an opportunity today to watch your Supernova blu-ray. First I'll mention that I don't have a burner so I extracted the film itself to lossless mkv using MakeMKV, and I play that on my external media player which handles mkv wonderfully. I did take a look at the menu video that plays and it's very well done.

Honestly I haven't seen this film look this good since I saw it in the theatre. Colors were wonderful, and there was a high amount of detail. Shadow detail was excellent, and blacks looks terrific. The sync was perfect. Motion was also perfect.

I did notice a couple instances of abnormalities, and I don't know if that was inherent to the source material or not:

- from 00:12:00 to 00:12:50 roughly, there are some weird artifacts on the screen during their prep for the jump. The screen seems to wobble and shift on and off, like faces seem to just shift and wobble. This begins just after the captain tells the doctor to use the other tube. I didn't notice this happen anywhere else. At first I thought it was the film but it doesn't really look like it is.

- At 01:00:34, just after Danica clocks him in the head and spits on him,  a vertical bar appears on the right side of the screen for a few seconds - top to bottom, and the bar appears lighter than the rest of the screen. It only lasts a few seconds and then everything is normal again.

Really those are the only things that caught my eye. The presentation was excellent - far better than the DVD. This movie is definitely underrated. There are some fantastic visuals - some very striking imagery with the blue dwarf, and the Nightingale is a beautiful ship. It had a great cast and excellent acting. And Danica was gorgeous. I also thought it was funny that they chose the captain of the Cygnus from The Black Hole to be the captain here too.

Thanks a ton for sharing your work with us. I look forward to disc 2!

Star Fleet/X-Bomber (1980) Remastered Edition (a work in progress)
Time

I discovered another DVD set of this series I didn't know existed. It was released last year I believe in Japan, by Bandai:

http://www.play-asia.com/x-bomber-aka-star-fleet-also-bomber-x-remaster-dvd-box-paOS-13-49-en-70-66ld.html

http://sgcafe.com/2012/11/1980s-sf-puppet-show-x-bomber-remastered-on-dvd/?utm_source=twitterfeed&utm_medium=twitter

I've seen a rip of one of those remastered episodes and they aren't what I would call remastered - apparently there were some serious issues with how they handled motion - I believe they used field blending from what I've read. The color leans heavily towards green. There does seem to be some good detail though. The French remasters look far better from some rips I've seen, though they tend to be darker too - maybe a tad too dark - a lot of the shadow detail is hidden in blacks in the French remaster, but clearly visible in the Bandai remasters. I still believe the French DVDs look the best - they certainly have the best color. I've only seen rips of the French DVDs, not full DVDs, so it's hard to compare detail levels. The motion seems excellent in the rips I've seen.

I'd be watching these on a 46" screen though and I fear rips won't hold up so well - just watching the rips I've seen on my 46" shows a lot of pixellation from the .avi compression. Full DVDs hold up a lot better, especially when upconverted by my player.
