Idea: So how come no one has made a less-painful fan edit of the Star Wars Holiday Special?
Time

Yeah... that was me - "The Ruthless Edit". It was my very first attempt at a fan edit and is pretty rough, but much more bearable, imho.

Someone here who teaches (?) a class on film ended up using it in his class iirc ... but that has been a long time ago.

There's a lot that should be changed, but with a bad source it's a bit like Dr. Frankenstein's assembly project and we all know how well that turned out.

sorry I've not been here in quite some time - was mostly just following Ady for a spell and then he also set up shop on Facebook.

Happy New Year to all!

Wingreen is staying and Morrison's voice will be altered for the PT. That's one of the 'written in stone' audio choices for the Revisited series, and there are no plans for a purist version of ESB:R.

SO glad for this! Considering that PT Boba grew up mostly not around Jango it was rubbish to change ESB Boba's voice to Temura's. Accents are regional, not genetic.

STAR WARS: EP IV 2004 REVISITED ADYWAN *1080p HD VERSION NOW IN PRODUCTION

thanks for the suggestions guys - I'm looking at either a 40" or 42" HDTV.

And thanks for the link to that Blu-Ray player - I will definitely check it out.

My dad has a 65" LCD and Blu-Ray is noticeably different than standard DVD. Not sure if it will make a ton of difference in the size we're looking to get.

STAR WARS: EP IV 2004 REVISITED ADYWAN *1080p HD VERSION NOW IN PRODUCTION

Hi everyone - it's been a while since I posted, but i've been following the Adywan threads.

I'm about to make the leap into the Hi-Def world (TV, Blu-Ray, etc.) - late I know.

I do have the DVD9 version of revisited - is that the highest rez out there or should I look for yet another version? And if so where (I am not a torrent guy)

Thanks in advance!

This seems like something Ady would have already caught (IF he considered it a continuity error)... but I did not see it listed anywhere as a fix, so...

... I took it upon myself to do a mockup:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f4_tZ6Yd9fs

Even in 1997, the SE shot bothered me, not because it was poorly done, but because it seems to break continuity! In one shot, the Falcon and Slave 1 pull out of the garbage trail... only to wind up back in it again!

Deja vu? Groundhog day? Hmm...

i haven't listed it as a fix because the scene is being changed

Well that's a reply I wasn't expecting! Very interesting....

Glad to hear it. this is a troubling scene. Especially since it seems Salve I is basically chained to the Falcon. Seriously with their proximity, you'd have thought Fett's ship would have shown up on some instrument panel like in ANH when the Falcon alerts Solo to the TIE approach.

As a completely non-OT:R subject but related to Ady's mock-up, I would also suggest making Mace the only Jedi to confront Palpy. This may be a nightmare to edit (both visually and auditory), but if pulled off would add a lot to Mason J. Windu's character. Just something to file away until 2019....

i will be doing that.

wow so no apperance in that scene for Kit Fisto and the others? Interesting.

(sigh of relief)! thank you Ady!!!

ROTS always bugged in me in this scene. After years of fighting in the clone wars, these Jedi generals can only just stand there and be hacked down? That never felt right. And sadly even though Sam Jackson said he told GL he didn't want to "go out like a punk" that's exactly what happened. There was no emotional impact like when Qui-Gon died.

back to the ESB:R discussion... or pies... or whatever random thing has crept in

Star Wars: The Trilogy **PROJECT STALLED DUE TO HARD DRIVE FAILURE**
Time

your ROTJ edit sounds great!! Can't wait to see where it goes!

One possible issue with it's text crawl in red. I read somewhere that when using a projection system that red text is difficult for the human eye to see well. especially against black. Someone correct me if I'm wrong. I know most of us will be watching it on laptops or TVs, but just thought I'd throw that out there.

Again, I look forward to your ROTJ edit! (and I love the ideas of going Episode-less intros!)

See the problem I have is this isn't just an idea that sprung into his head. This was suspose to be the Emperor's master plan. So I think that instead of Vader seggesting the idea to the emperor, the emperor should suggest the idea to Vader, if you catch my drift.

Two things:

1) What's this "master plan" the Emperor is supposed to have? Based on the conversation, the way I see it , it looks as though Palpatine just wants Luke whacked so he no longer poses a threat. It's Vader who then comes up with the idea of turning Luke to the Dark Side -- reason being a) he's his son, and b) Vader sees Luke as a means to move up the corporate ladder and take Palpatine's job. The Emperor, for his part, agrees to this suggestion, either because a) he acknowledges that 3 bad guys are better than 2, or b) he knows what Vader is up to and wants to beat him at his own game (i.e., use Luke to get rid of the competition which Vader poses, which is exactly what he ends up doing in ROTJ).

I always thought that Palps gets the idea to have Luke replace Vader (i.e. trade in the new younger, stronger model). It's like a bad marriage when the husband has a mid-wife crisis.

We see him do it once already in ROTS "Soon I will have a new apprentice, one far younger and more powerful."

Since he's not omniscient, it dawns on him in this coversation w/Vader and he decides to trade up.

Great shot Ady! Major credit for changing the officer's uniform.

was going to ask the same thing that Angel did about the window reflections. I always felt these windows look too much like openings to the outside. The subtle reflection of the frame is all you need to suggest glass panes.

GREAT work Ady! Though I've not commented much, it's been fun to watch the progress as you go.

asterisk8: I always just assumed many of the windows in cloud city were openings in the walls and not glass enclosed windows. Funny how when you think you see something as a kid you just assume it as you go forward

Wow Ady!

It's been a while since I've posted - mostly just checking in from time to time. the tweaks to Yoda are subtle, yet help give him a bit more life likeness. Like someone else said, if I didn't know what to look for, I would not have noticed. they are undistracting improvements!

I now think LFL is waiting to release the saga on Blu-Ray until you finish the Revisited series and they know what a Special Edition truly means.

Clone Wars 2008 Redux - working title - CANCELLED
Time

thanks for the compliments on the very rough draft.

A lot of this edit still depends on me being able to decode AC3 to WAV. If that doesn't happen it will be much tougher to do a decent job.

Yes, I intend to cut a lot of the droid idiocy. Thank God there was no Jar Jar.

I think Adywan has raised the bar extremely high for us uber novices. I do not have the skills or know how to recolor, or repaint Ziro. So his look will stay.

As far as the new music... what's there now is a temp track, though I am growing fond of it. I always appreciated that John Williams had a very unique sound for the Mos Eisely band. It was sort of big band jazz, but used steel drum and Moog synth - giving it an "otherworldy" feel. The music used in the theatrical release has got to go. Film Noir music just doesn't fit, nor the music used after the IG droid is removed. So I'm still looking for other music, but at this point I the temp track reminds me somewhat of Jabba's palace (circa 1983) when we first enter the scene, NOT Lapti Nek.

Again for me, editing this is more about making it less painful to watch. I do not consider this "film" to be any part of the Star Wars cannon... more like a "What If?" or part of he Infinities line.

Clone Wars 2008 Redux - working title - CANCELLED
Time

ARRRGH! I'm having a heck of a time with trying to rip vobs / demux audio / split the surround channels on this one. I've spent about 4 hours in the "Technical How-To's" section and still can't break this one. I'm on a Mac using Final Cut Express and have MactheRipper2.6.6, Handbrake, MPEGstreamclip, BBDemux and mAC3dec and all to no avail. Actually I can do handbrake to MP4, but the quality is not there and am left with only stereo sound - which is no good for editing.

Any help or ideas from Mac folks would be great.

Here's a very quick, rough working draft of what I'd like to do with the scene at Ziro's. This took me about 10 minutes (using iMovie and someone else's Youtube upload). I stress it is a draft, or sketch if you will and not meant to be any sort of final quality or audio mix.

I will mostly be keeping the soundtrack (with the above stated exception). I know many people dislike it - but since this wasn't live action, I had no problem with it. The wooden, marionette, Thunderbird style already takes me out of the SW universe enough to warrant a stylistic music change.

anyway - I think I found a song that will work great for the Ziro scene.

http://soundclick.com/share?songid=1699861

It has overtones to Jabba's palace, is unique enough and fits my 'otherworldly' criteria.

sounds awesome. if it works, you could work the entire series perhaps?

please dont use the clone wars logo though, use the STAR WARS one, but perhaps enstead of "EPISODE" it could be "CLONE WARS I" or something, or perhaps EPISODE II.I, then EPISODE II.II etc?

LOL - the entire series may take quite a bit more time than I'd like

I plan to remove the CW logo and go with the STAR WARS logo and then.... I'm not quite sure... I'm leaning towards just "THE CLONE WARS" without episode numbers. I'm looking at this as part of the SW theatrical releases... as a stand alone.

thanks for the ideas
