Yeah, have it handled in the audio selection logic.  You choose Thai audio, you get Thai forced subs whether you like it or not.  The trick is that they should also be UN-selected when you select any other audio option.

That shouldn't be too difficult, I can set a condition on the main feature to the tune of:

If
Current Audio Track = Thai
Then
Set Subtitle Track = Thai forced
Turn Subtitles On

Awesome, PM sent.

Actually, that raises a question that I had for Harmy. For the audio tracks that are dubs and have those forced subs, do you want those sub tracks to be in the menu along with the rest of the sub tracks, or would you rather them be hidden from the menu and just toggled on by default whenever the audio track is selected?

Am still curious - did you verify that all tracks are selectable via the menu elements, even though there was mention of the 9 track limitation in the documentation?

Any kind of track limitation would only pertain to the muxing of the disc itself and not the menu (as long as its size doesn't exceed the total image buffer it can have as many things on it as we want, and it's not even close to maxing out the buffer)

All that being said - I'd still be down with helping on the graphics front if you'd like. I could work with the layout ideas you have, as well as the font. It's certainly more readable than the one I was working with (which required layers of various things to "stand out" properly).

I'm currently putting together more or less a "template" that just needs to be filled in and tinkered with, i'll let you know when it's ready. :)

The only thing I can see being annoying is putting in thumbnails for the chapters since there are so many of them, but only because it's time consuming, not because it's difficult.

By the way, I haven't verified yet, but are the chapter markers in the mkv verified or were they put in automatically?

Well, assuming you go with the most recent Project Threepio, the unverified languages have dropped to just Estonian, Farsi, Ukrainian, and Vietnamese (and I don't even list them like that anymore, because the quality issues aren't nearly as bad).  If pressed for space, you could also drop dialects (one of the Spanish or Portuguese dialects, for example).

Okay so I restored the ones I had deleted before and removed the ones you suggested above and it was too many. Here's what I do know now:

*39 tracks is too many to fit.
*33 tracks DID fit.

So somewhere in between those two numbers is the magic number that will fit. So if you absolutely HAD to, could you list the subtitle tracks you would suggest leaving off? I can subtract and remux one at a time until everything fits successfully.

The current subtitle tracks that are NOT included are:
-Estonian
-Farsi
-Ukrainian
-Vietnamese

I also noticed that there were "DeEd v1" and "DeEd v2" matching subtitles. Do the "DeEd v2" subs correspond to the current v2.5? If so I can include them as well but the numbers above will need to be adjusted by 1.

The next version will also have Malay, and for God's sake use the 720p graphical subs instead of trying to render the things yourself.

Oh I definitely used the ones that were already there and I'm REALLY glad they were, I've already dealt with converting srt's to graphical subs before on a different project and it is not an experience I am eager to repeat :P

This is what I suggest for the audio/subtitle menu (the arrows are placeholders until I can find something that looks nicer):

Click for full size

This will preserve the clean aesthetic and maximize readability.

You're speaking of having separate "motion menus", remember that Blu-Ray doesn't make any distinction between the two. The only difference between this:

and this

(Full size)

is the video that is currently playing when you press the menu button.

So here's a little mock-up/proof of concept I put together for the menu:

http://i.imgur.com/EAyrcQ6.png

This is the root menu that would display whenever you press the pop-up menu button on your remote while watching the movie. The font is ITC Serif Gothic, which was (and still is) used in a lot of the original promotional materials ("The Force Awakens" is a bold version of the same font, for instance). If the "main menu" background video is playing instead of the movie, the button that says "main menu" will say "play" instead, and the menu itself will be locked on-screen. I haven't put together the sub-menus yet, but they would also be bars along the screen above the current one, either the same length or slightly shorter, I haven't decided yet. I'd also probably make them slightly transparent.

Also if there are any bonus features Harmy wants to include then this will obviously have to be revised.

What do you guys think?

Have any of you tried your hand/have the money for Adobe Encore?  I've had great luck with it authoring dvds and blu rays in the past and it is fairly user friendly

I've never used it for Blu-Rays (it's not capable of creating replication-ready masters, probably due to AACS licensing), but I've authored 4 DVDs (shameless plug) with it and you couldn't pay me to use it again. I once had to re-do one DVD from scratch because it crashed every time it tried to load the subtitles, including when trying to delete them. It might have been good once upon a time but Adobe stopped supporting it in 2012 and it's pretty busted now.

I had seen that before, and I wasn't going in with very high hopes even though I know the Blu-Ray format itself allows more audio tracks than that, but I've already compiled the disc without subtitles and all the audio tracks show up just fine.

(better software like PowerDVD displays the actual language of the audio tracks but PowerDVD also disables screenshots for Blu-Ray discs >:I )

Last post here suggests a method to convert srt to DoStudio's DOST subtitle format.

http://netblender.ning.com/forum/topics/bdn-xml-dost-format-subtitle-converter-exe

If you have the option with DoStudio 4, go with HDMV menus rather than BD-J as the discs run far better in older Profile 1.0 Blu-ray players.

I've already converted them; DOST is pretty much BDN+XML with a differently formatted XML file, and I was able to convert ProjectThreepio's 720 SUP files to BDN+XML with no trouble because the .pngs were already there.

As for authoring in HDMV mode, I've only got DoStudio Indie, which is BD-J only. I could upgrade to DoStudio EX for HDMV mode if you guys want to pitch in $2000 :P

Congratulations Harmy!

@ analog: What authoring software are you using currently? I ask because I'm also tinkering with making a Blu Ray as well (didn't know anybody else was, whoops), and I ran into issues with subtitles as well, and it appears to be what Catbus was describing. I muxed the disc without subs successfully but when I added all the subtitle tracks I got multiple errors telling me the data rate was exceeded. The software I'm using (Sony DoStudio 4.0) only allows image-based subtitles however, so unfortunately the only solutions would either be

a) regenerate every sub at a lower resolution (I used the 720p version in Project Threepio), although since they're already cropped to their minimum size I'm not sure how much difference that would make, since I'm 99% sure it's total image size that matters rather than resolution.

b) cut out a subtitle (or audio) track and remux until it all fits

As nice as it would be to have everything from the MKV download in one place I'm just not sure it's doable given the limitations of the format.

Any chance you'd be interested in collaborating? My Photoshop skills are pretty limited but DoStudio is very open-ended, so the menus can be programmed in any way you want, which would be useful since there are SO many tracks to choose from. Shoot me a PM and I can send you some examples of my previous BR work if you want.

edit: saw you had issues with chapter markers as well, in DoStudio they can simply be imported as a text file with the timecodes in it, if that's also a selling point :P

For those having Blu-Ray issues: there are several Blu Ray players out there that just will not play BD-Rs, period. Be sure to Google the model number of your player and see what it says (I found this out the hard way: I was working on a BR for a commercial release and some of our QA testers just could not play their test copies at all for this exact reason). I know for a fact that the PS3 WILL play BD-Rs (in fact my authoring software that I have said it was the "gold standard" for playback functionality), but the Xbox One will not. Not sure about the PS4.

As for the bit rate, I know the software I've got (DoStudio Indie 4.0) sets a limit at 40 Mbps for video with 48 Mbps total. It says that newer Blu Ray players are capable of higher bit rates but that the limit was placed to ensure maximum compatibility. What is the maximum bit rate of your file, Hal?

That would be one explanation. Though it wouldn't explain why my disc worked on the PS3, and not the PS4. Should certainly be powerful enough.

According to the PS4's website:

"Insert the disc, and then select the content from the content area. The first time you play a disc, you must enable the disc playback feature over the Internet."

Did you do this? I don't own a PS4 so I have no idea if they even make it obvious that it's something that needs to be done or not.

Am i the only one to think that this whole Missy/ master business is pretty lame? You build it up al the way through the series to the reveal and it was a bit of a damp squib. Why call her missy if you want to keep the suspense up until the climactic reveal? It was pretty obvious that the neversphere was the Gallifreyan matrix all along, but wouldn't it have been better for Missy to have turned out to be the Rani or even Roman gone bad and Missy being a total red herring to lead everyone to think that she is the master and BANG? But, no. Just Moffat being Moffat again

The Master has a history of using hilariously obvious aliases:

-Colonel Masters
-Reverend Magister (Latin for "Master")
-Professor Thascalos (Greek for "Master", Jo even says so in the show)
-Sir Gilles Estram (just an anagram of "Master")

So it may not have been a very good secret but it also wasn't exactly out of character, either.
