ROTJ is the best Star Wars film... discuss!
Time

ROTJ has always been my favourite since I watched the THX OT trilogy for the first time in 1995. I appreciate ESB more now, but when I first saw it it was so dark and dreary. ROTJ was a wonderful return to the light-hearted fun of the original Star Wars except done much better. And not that ESB wasn’t light-hearted. It certainly was. But the whole atmosphere was very dark (visually and figuratively) and oppressive.

Like I said, I appreciate it more now, and it’s not like I don’t like darker storytelling which ESB does very well, but I still enjoy ROTJ more. It’s just much more optimistic and…colourful and bright. I don’t know. And in the midst of it all there’s that VERY dark and oppressive throne room segment which is such an EPIC finale. I still get chills when I see it. But Luke in that scene took the optimism from ANH and the beginning of ROTJ and brought it into the depths of that darkness which was mirrored nicely by his bright green lightsaber shining in that dark and dreary place, trying to do the right thing, realizing what that would really take, and after giving in for a short moment, throws his saber away and gives himself to death for doing the right thing. And that’s when everything turns around.

I love ROTJ. I love that it has this mini-adventure rescue in the beginning with Jabba like a James Bond film or something (and something that didn’t involve the Empire for once, at that) and I like everyone having a reunion after the briefing scene (because they were all separated for pretty much all of ESB) and I even like the idea of the primitive natives taking out the technologically advanced Empire with their contrasting tactics. It’s quite similar to actual history and how some wars were won in the past via “primitive” engagement strategies going up against practised “civilized” tactics of massive battalions of soldiers so it’s not unheard of.

Oh boy, as soon as I saw the app I knew there would be a Solo fanedit that put Harrison Ford’s face in the movie. A lo’ and behold https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aEADJocGzX4 - A side note, shame Anthony Ingruber wasn’t cast

Someone just needs to get him to dub his voice over every line Han has in the movie that’s all. 😉

Han - Solo Movie ** Spoilers **

Something that hit me today is this whole movie is essentially a giant “Han shot last”. Everyone freaked out at changing Han in ANH from shooting first because it changed his character from a ruthless scoundrel selfish smuggler who has no problem killing who made friends and turned out to be a hero in the end to somebody who was “always good” and would never shoot first, or at least without provocation. This movie will unavoidably portray Han in a heroic light (because that’s what Star Wars is) which completely undermines his OT arc worse than shooting last did in the SE.

I had similar reservations at first, but I really don’t buy that Han was a horrible person pre-OT anyway.
Law breaker? Yeah.
Drug smuggler? Yeah.
Arrogant? Yeah.
Kill rather than be killed? Yeah.
“No problem with killing”? No, he’s not a murderer and I don’t believe he’s the kinda guy who kills without reason.
I have friends who fit this description. And while they aren’t involved in shootouts on the reg, I assure you they (and me) would rather shoot than be shot and wouldn’t wait for the gun pointed at them to go off before pulling the trigger. (again, it’s not a situation we find ourselves in, but I don’t have to wonder what would happen.)

Fair enough. That makes sense. However, I don’t believe he would have pulled off any heroic activities at all, like this movie undoubtedly will, until ANH.

Even with all that said, I just doubt anybody could play the character and make me believe it’s Han. He’s my favorite character to ever appear in anything. If not for Han, I’d never have gotten into StarWars. I’m willing to give it a chance though.

Pretty much 100% agree.

The new Spock doesn’t work. He’s meant to be an emotionless Vulcan but actually translates onscreen to being a constantly grumpy and irritated dude. You also have no reason to believe he would become best friends with the new Kirk who is basically boiled down to being a jock flyboy who’s main thing is just to disobey every order.

TLDR: The new Star Trek movies minus Beyond (which is delightful) are dumb action movies with poorly written characters.

I don’t agree with this because I don’t believe the Abrams Spock is precisely the same character as Nimoy’s Spock. He’s much less concerned with keeping his emotions in check in the Kelvin universe because of all the different events that happened. He even admits as much when he questions Kirk about offering assistance to Nero and when Kirk said he thought he’d “like that” he said basically “nope”. This is not the same Spock.

I haven’t seen Beyond yet but I kept hearing everywhere that it was much more authentic than either ST 09 or Into Darkness.

I can still enjoy it, though. But yeah, that guy is not Han. No way no how. Donald Glover looks amazing as Lando, though.

I do wish that the film looked more vibrant and colourful like the posters make it out to be. Yet we still have that grit stark contrasting light. I don’t mind a gritty look, but we’ve had it in 3 movies now. It’d be nice to have a change of style. Those poster look awesome. Kind of like a 60s sci-fi/70s western look.

OOT vhs box set? (answer: an OT VHS box set from 2000; the 1997 Special Editions)
Time

I’ve only now just noticed that the Struzan ROTJ art has ESB’s Luke and Vader duel (complete with blaster on hip and a blue blade).

Something else to keep in mind about the Struzan artwork is that all three covers are a collage that fit together into one big image. You can tell with the starfield between the three images that the middle is ESB and the stars are moving out towards the left on the ANH cover and to the right on the ROTJ cover. That’s why no characters are repeated across the 3 covers (except Luke and Vader dueling obviously), which kind of explains why Palpatine is on the ESB cover. ESB has all the bad guys, ANH has all the good guys, and ROTJ has the random leftovers.

The Tie Fighter Sound
Time

Honestly I saw it in a bunch of other movies before I saw Star Wars. I always thought of it as a “oh they’re using that sound library” thing rather than a very public homage intentional “yep! we used that sound again!” type of thing. Actually, wasn’t it a meme for zombie horror movies before it was “discovered” in Star Wars? I think the community discovering it contributed to it exploding more than anything. Now it’s become a meme. But it never used to be like that in the public consciousness. At least I never thought so. Its inclusion in TFA and TLJ has become as expectant as hearing the line “I’ve got a really bad feeling about this”. It’s even in The Clone Wars. It is going too far now. It’s kind of ruined because everyone discovered it. I liked it better when it was just something slipped in.
