The Big List of Changes to the Star Wars films
Time

Amazingly enough, despite being the “definitive” mix for the film in 1977, this mono version has faded into obscurity. It was never released on video/laserdisc/DVD (in the US, at least), and is only available through low-quality bootlegs today.

Anyone know if the mono mix would have been used for broadcast on pay cable ca. 1980? Our first copy of Star Wars was taped off of cable TV, and when we finally bought a videotape of it, I remember Beru’s voice became different when we switched to the official released tape.

So I randomly thought about this interview between George and Leonard Maltin. It was on the last VHS release of the OOT (I always fast forwarded it as a kid). Interestingly George seems kinda relaxed here, and not awkward and bitter. Maybe because this is before hate towards him because of the Special Editions and the prequels. The flannel shirts are also absent…

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B-LvSbsEDI4

It’s pretty brief and was originally split over 3 tapes. However some tid-bits for this thread:
He says he first wrote his own space opera, inspired by Flash Gordon. Did he ever write his own version though?
Still claims SW is the “first act” of a much larger script. Also mentions the alleged “back story” about Anakin’s wife.
Says he’s writing all 3 prequels at once, but then during pre-production of one of them (maybe EpII?) he sees all the designers at work and says something like “I better start on this script”…
Claims the twins reveal and the redemption of Vader was always part of the back-story.

Wow! I must have watched that interview a dozen times in the 90’s, but I have absolutely no memory of Lucas discussing the PT. I remember a lot of that interview, but even seeing the PT part again doesn’t jog my memory of that.

To me it seems probable that Prowse put two and two together faster than anyone else in the cast - and then talked endlessly to magazines about his personal theory as to what was likely to happen in ESB, rather than keeping quiet for the sake of maintaining the surprise.

I have a hard time believing Prowse figured it out based only on the first movie since Lucas doesn’t seem to have decided to make Anakin and Vader the same person until the ESB 2nd draft. Though it does suddenly occur to me that Vader could be Luke’s father without Vader and Anakin being the same person.

I could believe perhaps that Prowse just made it up, and it coincidentally turned out to be true.

my memory isn't that bad, is it? (in SW '77 - Luke misses with the grappling hook?)
Time

OK. I had not remembered Luke throwing and missing once, but when I read this thread it jogged a memory NOT of Luke throwing and missing, but of when I finally saw Starwars on pay cable (maybe 3 years (ca. 1980?) after seeing it in the theater.) I now vaguely remember feeling that scene was not shorter on TV.

I don’t remember if he threw and missed though that does seem vaguely familiar now that you mention it, but I do remember the scene seeming to be a over quicker.

It may just be that at 4 years old and seeing it for the first time in 1977 that I really was terrified that they were about to die and that made it seem longer, but it is interesting to me in light of all the people who seem to remember Luke throwing twice.

I heard about that, but given that he then went on to say that Luke would turn to the dark side, I think he was joking. He was using that twist as an example of a ridiculous plot point that could never happen, not knowing that they were actually planning to use that twist.

This is all it said in the article I had. I feel like he was serious.

"Darth Vader and Luke Skywalker…are hooked up in a do-or-die light saber duel when Luke learns that Darth is, in fact, his long-lost father. “Father can’t kill son, son can’t kill father,” Prowse said. "So they live again in “Star Wars IV.” (Wild cheers.)

I’ve got a scan from a magazine article, but I don’t remember where I got it. I think it’s from a magazine published in Britain, and it is from 1978. In it, Prowse says the Vader will be revealed as Luke’s father in “Star Wars II”. This seems to contradict the idea that Prowse was not told about this. I’d upload the don’t see any way to do this.

Anyone else think Empire Strikes Back's Special Edition is actually better than the Theatrical Cut?
Time

I prefer the original, but the ESB:SE is not bad unlike the SW and ROTJ SE’s which are terrible.

I can take either Wampa scene. Neither is that good.

The more open Cloud City doesn’t bother me, but I don’t think it improves anything either, but there is one new moment of people stopping to listen to Lando which just looks completely out of place.

The new approach to Cloud City and the new shuttle scene are pointless and distracting.

I liked that R2 was still blue even in space.

My name is Michael. I saw Star Wars in the theater in 1977 with my father when I was four.

I posted here a little years ago, but not very much.

I’m a big of the early Star Wars stuff: the OT, the original Marvel comics, the Droids cartoon, and even the Holiday Special. I don’t care much for the newer stuff or even the EU.

With regards to the DS being able to use a hyperdrive. I am stunned that people think it wouldn’t. Space is really, really big…I mean, really big. For the DS to not be able to fly at lightspeed would render it completely useless for striking fear into the galaxy.

Of course it realisticly needs a hyperdrive, but I’m not sure if that was the original intent. In the older Superman comics stuff was always just drifting from Krypton to earth with no propulsion at all more less a hyperdrive. Writers didn’t always think that stuff through, and Lucas probably didn’t either.

Indeed, the Falcon famously went from the Anoat system to Bespin sans hyperdrive, so clearly spacial distances are not a huge concern in the SW universe (I bet there’s a debate about that little trip somewhere in these forums!)…

Probably, I started to bring that up, but was afraid of what argument it might start.

Let’s talk about Star Wars fans
Time

Red Letter Media posted a video on Youtube where they were basically mocking other people who review Star Wars online by the way they were acting, and I thumbed it down because I thought it was kind of obnoxious to mock Star Fans even if they can be over the top, but I thought about it later it it was actually a pretty spot on parody. Christopher Nolan fans probably have the highest ratio of of annoying fans to not annoying fans of any fanbase, but Star Wars has to be up there.

yes . 95 and 96 were great issues IMHO . I thought there was a nice manga look to the art as well and it was long before the current manga craze .I thought luke’s second weapon was a smaller lightsaber though.

You know, looking at in now it is unclear. I always took it to be the short blade Kiro brought from his homeword which he retrieves from his belongings before going to rescue Luke. And we see a close up of it, with Lukes hand approaching it as tells Kiro he has an idea.

But Luke does tell Kiro he needs to make something before facing Lumiya, and when he faces her both weapons look like energy weapons, and he says that have two waepons one short and one long will allow him to match the two natures of her weapon so I’m not sure anymore.

And I see what you mean about the manga feel.

The movies that got us all hooked on the galaxy far, far away have essentially died as far as official policy is concerned - that is my point. Disney has the power to resurrect them, but they are either unwilling to do so, or just can’t be bothered. Star Wars should have been allowed to die in peace, to just exist for what it was without having to be continually revisited. And yet the commercial exploitation continues and shows no sign of ever stopping.
George Lucas, for all his infuriating stubbornness, at least had personal and artistic reasons for doing what he did, misguided though it was. Disney, on the other hand, doesn’t care about anything except money.

Are you actually saying that George didn’t commercially exploit Star Wars out the wazoo before Disney got a hold of it? Because I seriously beg to differ. Star Wars was merchandised like mad since the very beginning.

After ESB it really felt to me like Lucas only made Star Wars movies to sell merchandise.

what are people here’s favorite issues or story lines from the series ?

95 and 96 will always be near and dear to me because they were the only ones I had as a kid, and read them until they were worn out. It involved Luke losing to a fight with Lumiya because her whip had energy and material elements and Luke could only handle one of the other with his light saber. In the end Luke beat hear by using a light saber AND a sword at the same time. See, he also had a energy weapon and a physical weapon. Makes sense, right?

I watch it on YouTube all the time. Bea Arthur is great. It’s definitely better than the prequels and special editions. No, that’s not hyperbole. There is nothing in the Holiday Special worse than jar-jar or that Jedi rocks musical crap.

I agree the Bea Arthur is good in it. I like the cartoon and Jefferson Starship too. I probably like it better than AOTC and ROTS though they are hard to compare. I do think TPM is better than the Holiday Special, but that’s because Holiday Special is so bad no because TPM is good.

I’m looking at the cover to the actual issue #8 and comparing it to the reprinted cover, and the original Han’s cheeks are highlighted in a redder color than the rest of his face. In the reprint it all one solid color (I’ve got photos, but I can’t figure out how to attach them).

You have to look closely to see the difference, but even when not comparing them side by side the original feels more complete and the reprint is noticeably simpler because there are so many little ways that the reprint cuts corners on coloring.

Someone please correct me because I will say in advance that I have no idea what I’m talking about, but many years ago, I had a conversation with someone who claimed that since they never had any plans to reprint old comics years later in order to make a reprint old comics from company archives were put through a process that destroyed the original but reproduced an inked copy without color which then have to recolored. I don’t really know, but the context was the person was explaining why reprint covers often had to be redrawn on the left margin. Since they were working from company archive copies which had been bound into books the left margin of the cover was unrecoverable. The fact that the left edge of covers often had to be redrawn is obvious in some cases. For instance, there’s a flash cover in an archive edition which is mildly famous for replacing flashes foot with what looks like a flipper.
