Are the Prequels Even Worth Watching Once?
Time

@ IP55

A prequel is a story that takes place before, so I don’t know how you can tell that R1 is “more a prequel” than, for example, TPM. It’s closer in the timeline and it looks identital to ANH, but it’s not in any way “more prequel” (if Disney happens to make a Old Republic Trilogy it still would be prequels even if mostly/totally unrelated to the main saga). A better film ? Yeah you may think that if you want.

No one shares any of your unpopular opinions regarding acting…

It’s true, he (?) is the only one I’ve ever seen who thinks Daisy did a terrible job.

Even the biggest OT/EU fanboy couldn’t deny the quality of the acting in TFA.

John Boyega, Adam Driver and Max von Sydow are good. Andy Serkis as well but it’s the minimum he’s capable to do so nothing to impress me here. Most of the others are quite bad, including Ford, Fisher (probably one of her worst performance) and, you’ve guessed, Ridley and Gleeson.

I actually laughed in the theater when he takes his mask off to reveal that he’s just some bratty kid. It’s a fantastic moment, gives you the exact impression of him that you’re supposed to have: he’s a wannabe who has very little idea what he’s doing.

I strongly agree. The only difference is that you think this is brillant while I believe it ruins the main menace… and the story as a whole. In ANH Tarkin and Vader are cold and intelligent; in TFA their “young versions” Hux and Ren are so childish that I never believe in the First Order. I just don’t buy it.

“I hate TFA, it’s such a rehash. Also, the main villains are not like Tarkin or Vader, which is also bad.”

I kinda feel like this is what a lot of the arguments against the Disney-era films boil down to.

That’s because you don’t understand my point. Rehash or not, you’ve got to make good villains, which are severely lacking in TFA. Hux/Ren is obviously a Tarkin/Vader rehash for kids (Harry Potter/Hunger Games generation), and a lame rehash, which does not work. Like the plot is an OT rehash, and a lame rehash. Hux reminds me of the villain in Die Hard 4. Hux actor also sucks in his part (powerful speech ? Seriously guys…).

A random vision of Luke and Vader teaching her to use mindtricks doesn’t make any more sense to me either. I’d say it’d probably distract from the scene instead of improving it.

Don’t worry I was slightly kidding 😃 Among TFA problems are for me these two particular scenes. Not sure they can really be improved. I guess it’s an internal issue that cannot be solved through fanediting. Let’s hope Episode 8 will “fix” it backwards.

Well, it’ll still be a very focused edit on this particular issue

Then I would suggest to completely remove Poe’s reaction “Our work here is done” which is too cheerful considering the situation.

For Finn’s “They have done it” you can only fix this small issue by also removing “Where is Rey ?” . I know the solution to split his reaction shot in two does not work. Or is it possible to replace “They have done it” with “Where is Rey ?”. Hum… not sure…

Small things can still make a difference. Glad you won’t touch the Ben Solo/Kylo Ren reveal, since I don’t agree with the edits which try to mirror even further TFA with TESB. Are you going to use an alternate title as well if you’re up to rewrite the crawl ? (Bloodline does not sound that great for a SW movie I think - I mean if you want to use the “prequel book” trend you’ve used for your PT edits).

edit: by the way I’ve shown my bro a few scenes of the edit (Hosnian system destruction replaced with a Star Destroyer and descending Tie Figthers; Han Solo death in parallel of the Hosnian destruction) and he didn’t even notice what’s been changed. I think someone not familiar with the movie wouldn’t be able to spot the fanediting, which is great !

but would love to take a look at the scene where Leia sends her envoy to the Republic.

This could strengthen a great deal the political background of the movie. 'cause I still don’t understand what’s going on in this movie from a political point of view (yeah I’ve read the wiki entries of the EU to know what’s the movie is missing).

There will be an eventual V2

For reinserting deleted scenes I guess ? I hope you also will trim a few things here and there (Not so gentle restructure edition). The RLM review gave a few ideas which are worth taking into consideration imho (such as the comedy bits that take too much place and should be trimmed a little and other forced friendship reactions that don’t feel natural at all between Rey/Finn and Finn/Poe).
Also I wonder if Rey’s Force vision shouldn’t be splitted in two: first part as we know it, at Maz, the second part after when Ben Solo unlocks her mind, because there clearly lacks a “in between” moment when she tries twice in a row the Jedi Mind Trick. It could smoother the “WTF ?” issue of the scene.
