Deleted Scene Comparison

Here is my first go at the deleted scene.
The entire capture went smoothly, but the encoder dropped a few frames on the “enhanced” version. I can share the raw cap if someone wants it.

Can you do a side by side comparison with the cut version? Just so those of us who haven’t seen the movie in a long time get a sense of what needs to be restored?

I haven’t ripped my blu-ray. I can, but it should be fairly simple. This is the first frame before the deleted scene, and IIRC the part where they start cleaning the house at the end should be in the cut.

So, there’s a laserdisc up for bids on eBay.

https://www.ebay.com/itm/Revenge-of-the-nerds-80s-comedy-LASERDISC-LD/183179598885?hash=item2aa65adc25:g:kCsAAOSw9uNa0wC-

Is there anyone willing and able to capture and share this (preferably in the US) if I throw a bid in? I’d need their delivery details up front.

Hopefully it goes for a little less than the 16mm print did…

I’ve got that very laserdisc. I can capture it this week.

Can you turn off CX noise reduction in your player? Some later models make this difficult to do.

I am planning to use my CLD-D504. It shouldn’t be a problem, but if it is I have a couple of older (backup) players that I could use.

What did you do this on? virtualdub/avisynth?

Avisynth, you need masktools2 and hqdn3d. Just add those to your plugins directory. You can auto load the script easily by saving the text from function to the last } as a .avsi file. Place it in your plugins folder and all you have to do is import your video and type in the function name.

It’s easier done than said 😉

Why are you working from the DVD when there’s a Bluray? Oh right now I see your edit comments. 😃

Yeah, and from what I’ve seen of screenshots, the bluray doesn’t look like it needs much. So much for a week’s work! 😄

I want to know if there is any interest in this. Return To Oz is one of my favorite childhood films, and the DVD doesn’t do the film justice. Here are a few comparisons between the official DVD and my (work in progress) remaster.

OzComp1
OzComp2

Let me know what you think 😃

Edit: I’ve found that there is a bluray in existence, but it’s beyond my means to get it at it’s (OOP) price point.
Edit 2: Found a copy of the bluray on ebay for a reasonable price.

Video Comparison
pass: ot
I have the settings fairly high, probably too high, so I’ve made this function where you can adjust the settings (per clip if you need to). And yes, the name is a pun 😃

function msx(clip y, float “ls”, float “cs”, float “lt”, float “ct”)
{### © MWilson
ls=Default (ls,127/3)
cs=Default(cs,96/3)
lt=Default(lt,3)
ct=Default(ct,2)

y=y.converttoyv12()
a=y.hqdn3d(ls,cs,lt,ct)
b=y.FlipHorizontal().hqdn3d(ls,cs,lt,ct).FlipHorizontal()
c=y.FlipVertical().hqdn3d(ls,cs,lt,ct).FlipVertical()
mt_makediff(a,y,y=3,u=3,v=3)
mt_makediff(y,last,y=3,u=3,v=3)
d=last
mt_makediff(b,y,y=3,u=3,v=3)
mt_makediff(d,last,y=3,u=3,v=3)
e=last
mt_makediff(c,y,y=3,u=3,v=3)
mt_makediff(e,last,y=3,u=3,v=3)
f=last
av=mt_average(f,y,y=3,u=3,v=3)
return av

probably in ten years the neural net and deep learning computing will do this kind of things perfectly, like video upscale, black and white colorize, inpaint, color matching bewteen two clips… we’ll see!

Fingers crossed! 😄

Great, thanks! Sadly, this is just a nice idea for the moment, because, even if I could be able to recreate some shots, they will be not enough I think to justify a whole project… unless someone shows interest anyway, or would like to help with other ways to “fill” the missing parts.

Still, some shots could “maybe” used for the extended edition.

Have you tried seam carving? There are a couple of plugins for avisynth (both by V.C. Mohan).

Here’s what I’m using on ANH.
Convert to RGB first

ColorBalance(rm=8,gm=8,bm=-3,rh=20,gh=18,bh=4)####ColorBalance(bs=4,gs=2,rm=12,gm=8,bm=-2,rh=20,gh=18,bh=8)##May be closer?
converttoyv12(matrix=“Rec709”)
tweak(sat=1.25,maxsat=59.5,interp=32)##Not Necessary, But looks better on my end.

MWilson, thanks for the function; sadly, it doesn’t replicate Ronster’s one…

Top ColorBalance, bottom Ronster:

still too magenta.

You’re right, that was just copying Ronster’s values above.
I’m working on something that should turn out closer.

  • find a color version (even in the lowest resolution/bitrate) to use as color reference - a really remote chance, but who knows, we have the Editdroid laserdisc, after all!

Benduwan, do you have a copy of the cantina scene like this!? I mean not blown out, doesn’t have to be color. That could be workable! 😃

Thanks!
