***The "Darth Editous" Episode IV DVD Info and Feedback Thread*** - a partially "de-specialed" DVD
Time
Well, to be fair, the speeder is nice and crisp because it's really there (and the camera's panning with it), and the CGI is 10 years old (and if they redid it today we'd start complaining about 10 years from now about the horrible CGI Ronto). It's best left in than attempting to do anything with it.

DE

Actutally I thought since there was plenty on background in the shot, that the Ronto could be removed all together. Hey, I'm not an editor so I don't know what can or cannot be done. I just saw some amazing work done with ANH (is there brown on my nose?) and figured I'd ask about a few extra tweaks.

DE....I've had your disc spinning on repeat all day. Top notch job overall.

1. Luke's lightsabre - yeah, it does look pretty crappy, but it's a lot of work and if I change it in that shot, I'd have a hard time excusing myself from changing it in every other shot. I might go back and tweak the colours (that screenshot you posted still looks a bit green), but the colours are so off anyway there doesn't seem to be much point.

Yeah. I know you have a life too. I just brought it up because I know myself (and many others I'm sure) would be thrilled to see that complete scene with a decent blade.

2. I can sort of see your point, but I'm not convinced the film's been sped up. I think it's just a couple of smokey flashes coupled with some whippy camera work.

I watched the scene again and again and again......Now I'm just dizzy....Something looks odd as she makes the jump....but I can't place it.

3. Unfortunately the only thing I could replace it with (currently) would be a Laserdisc capture, and I decided at the start that I wouldn't use any lower-quality elements (the only exception will be Sebastian Shaw at the end of RoTJ). Perhaps when the new DVDs come out I'll take another look.

Point taken and agreed. You don't want to lower the quality. Besides, I always have my laserdisc copy if I want to view the scene in it's original form.

I sat down and watched the scene again. One thing that really jumped out at me was this guy:

Here you have a nice crisp looking speeder....with this horrible cgi ronto. It ruins the shot imo.

I finally finished my dl of your ANH from demonoid. I haven't watched it all the way through yet, but I skipped through it to see some fixes. Lets me just say THANK YOU for your efforts. The Han/Greedo scene looked absolutly wonderful, I was very impressed. Also the removal of the "jumps" during lightsaber ignitions/de ignitions? were superb. Many other scenes too......too many to list. Let me sum it up by saying this is the ONLY version of ANH I will bother watching now.

Now that I've bowed to your greatness. May I offer a couple suggestions?

1. Lukes saber while training on the facon could use some touching up. It's still too "solid" looking and far too white. (I know thats not your doing, but seeing how well you've touched up other scenes...)

Rough photoshop touchup

2. When Leia jumps down the garbage chute, the film was obviously sped up (typical of the 70's)....and the smoke really gives it away. Maybe paint out that speeding puff hehe.

3. The ronto that passes in front of Luke's speeder as they approch the checkpoint in Mos Eisley. Pointless. All it does is give you a screenfull of cgi ronto skin.

I don't know if other people have suggested changes or not. And I know you can't please everyone. Also, I'm not picking at your work. I'm just tossing a bone out there.

thanks

Help Wanted: improving upon ADigitalMan's Revenge of the Sith edit
Time

I just finished watchng ADigitalMan’s edit of Revenge of the Sith. While I think this is a much better version of the film, there are two things that really bother me. The dragon that Obiwan rides emits this very annoying “yoop yoop yoop” and never seems to ever shut up. I tend to focus on the sound and it takes away from the fact that it is a very cool creature design. The other things is…Mace’s “pimp” saber. I really dislike the purple, and I know it’s only because Sam badgered George into letting him have it. While fighting Sidious, all I could think was "Wow…the purple really looks bad against the red. I think Mace would look so much better with a blue one.

Crude photoshop

Any editors out there feeling up to it?

Aslo I’m sure there are other “tweaks” that could be done to make ROTS very enjoyable. Feel free to post any suggestions.

EDIT - After another viewing. It would be nice to have the whole buzz droid scene cut too.

It's horrifically superfluous, and serves no purpose other than to say "look! more special bits that weren't there the first time!" The same could be said for some of the shots of the Falcon flying through Cloud City.

DE

Ah but it does give a nice view of cloud city. As for the tauntauns. I agree, it is part of the feel. I have no problem other that George saying the movies are now "timeless" (one reasoning for his edits) Do it all. Do it right. Or don't do it at all George!

My 3 year old LOVES Empire. In fact...today's his birthday and I'm giving him the 12 inch Darth Vader I've had in a box.

6. Yake out the SE podcar flying through cloud city just prior to showing Leia inside her quarters.

Whats wrong with that shot? DE....you should leave that in......Please?

Another thing that has always bugged me. George went and "re-did" a bunch of special effects shots, yet he left in the rickety stop motion tauntauns that look like they came out of a 50's Sinbad movie.

A Challenge for DE?

/Downloading and eagerly waiting your ANH edit.
