Info: OT Bootleg DVDs
Time
Just to clear a few things up and ask some more questions

1) Laserdisc is an analogue picture format, with the option for Digital AC3 sound (i.e. Dolby Digital).
2) There is no way to 'directly' transfer the picture from Laserdisc to the PC - You must digitize the video. The serial port som LD players have is to control the laserdisc player from the PC , like a cord remote control.
3) Pioneer did make industrial LAserdisc Players with RGB component out - This may be the best quality you will get.
4) Any digitizing should be done first with a lossless Codec like huffy, and with a card that supports full 4:4:4 or at least 4:2:2
5) It should then be transcoded to DVD or even better to WMV9 for better quality for those people running HTPCs

I would love to do a full broadcast quality transfer, but the definitive trilogy Laserdics are not available in Australia, at all

Now the questions!

1) Why don't the people who have decent DVD copies reseed them as torrents? That is the whole idea of bittorrent that the more people that get it, the faster and more available it is to all.

2) Is the definitive Laserdisc set in Dolby digital (AC3) or PCM?

3) I have an idea for a new project, i.e. re-editing the special edition DVDs.
The transfer on these will be better than the Laserdisc originals, and the Audio will be far superior. My idea is to use the SE as a base, and re-edit it to remove the offensive new stuff, and then re-insert any replacement footage from the Laserdisc versions.
We have the gear here to colour correct and match the footage qualities from the two versions to make it pretty seamless.
I would be intending to leave in true improvements ( such as the improved mattes in the snowspeeder scenes in Empire) but cut out the horrible things like the cantina scene, and all the new comic relief elements, Jabba and so on. That is, only really leave in the 'error corrections'

Of course I gotta get my hands on the LD set...

Wadda y'all think.

OT bootleg DVD reviews
Time
As you all know there are various bootleg versions of the OT out there, most are a transcode from the lasedisc versions, and the threads about them are very convoluted reading to say the least!

What we'd all like to see is some reviews here from people that have the various versions, and put the good the bad and the ugly up for all to see.
If you have more than one version of the bootlegs, and also have the laserdisc versions then a comparitive review would be ideal.

We would like to see the:
Picture Quality - Sharpness/detail, MPEG artifacts, colour rendition etc.
Audio Quality - Type (Dolby Digital/PCM/ bitrates etc.)
Extras Included - Commentaries, subtitles, chapters etc.
DVD size (DVD-5 or DVD-9)
Anything else you can think of.
But try and keep the thread to the point so that we can all compare and try to find the best OT version out there!

And remember kiddies, if you DL a torrent, reseed it for others to use!
