Well, that's the whole idea of adding the smoke. The GOUT shot is so grainy and dirty, that there's no way of removing the grain without turning it into a blurry blob, so I added the smoke to conceal it. It works much better when put into the film with sound and the subtitle, than it does on it's own.

Harmy, seriously, have you considered a "morph" transition effect instead of a fade between the two shots?

It may make it less noticable.

Also, here is an HQ video of the smoke scene, so you guys can see what I mean. It shows the shot with the GOUT element added without the smoke, then with the smoke and then side by side:

Harmy, DUDE,... its fine!

The first version is just fine with me. The GOUT footage is brief enough... Maybe I'm not that picky.... *shrug*

If you are going to use the second one (you know, with all that smoke) make sure you add a loud *FART* sound just before it engulfs the screen! ....make sure in the 5.1 mix that it comes from Jabba's direction... (jk)

No, it's not. The smoke is surely an on-set effect and is exactly the same in the OOT as in the SE. The problem is that this shot is very unsharp and extremely grainy in the GOUT. I can't put less smoke there, it looks too bad that way, I was actually tempted to add more of it. You must keep in mind that YOUTUBE compression takes away a lot of fine detail and therefore makes the quality difference less pronounced. Also, I made some more tweaks to the smoke in this video.

I swear its going the other way in the GOUT footage. watch this and go to 0:06. I swear to god the smoke moves the other way then back again when the 2004 footage returns. Maybe I'm hallucinating when I watch that clip?? :0

Either way, I still think its better keeping it that way than 'butchering' it with that Chewbacca backwards shot.

Please don't overdo the smoke. It looks passable to me with less. I think you may be be overeacting a bit to the unsharpness of the GOUT shot. Its not as terrible as you are making it out to be. I don't think anyone here, other than you, has stated that it is too bad to use. Its  noticable , yes, but not that bad.

Maybe tweeking the GOUT shot for lightness and contrast a bit more may help it blend in better....

The smoke idea is the solution! A little less smoke over Jabba during the GOUT footage would be better, imo.

Lemme' clarify something. We all love what you're doing and we love you for doing this project. Me included. I thought it as a "cop out" because I THOUGHT IT WAS WAY 'BENEATH' THIS PROJECT. This project is too good to have something like that in it.

Praise is good but unconditional praise in light of questionable decisions is bad.

btw, Did anyone notice that the smoke in the GOUT is going towards the left and 2004 smoke is going towards the right? Lucas must have re-done the smoke effect. I think that's another reason why that scene is so difficult to re-edit.

No, it will stay the way it is here. It's a reverse shot of Chewie from later in the scene. I always said I was gonna have to do that in order to remove the stupid added shot of Boba Fett flirting with the SE dancers. I did it exactly like this in the PDE and I think it works really well. In the ROTJ DVD Reconstruction I decided to use the GOUT shot and it stands out like a sore thumb even at DVD resolution, because that particular shot looks like crap in the GOUT. I experimented with only using Jabba from GOUT for the missing part but the quality difference is so huge that it just wouldn't work.

Aww...Too bad. Let me respectfully disagree.

Sorry, but its a bit of a cop out - what you did there.

At least you explained why you did it. Oh, well... *shrug*

Here's a little something for you guys. My thanks go to everyone who offered help with the subs but as you can see, I'm making good progress. I found a good system of making the subs in photoshop and have all the subs as PSDs now.

Wow! ...Love the upconversion on the Lapti nek.

Much better than that  "Jedi Sucks" song...

Sy looks so round, so firm... so fully-packed!! She's much hotter as a puppet! ;P

Yeah, the 04SE of Jedi has what is perhaps the worst SE change change ever. Hayden Christensen as Anakin's ghost for me is far worse than even Greedo shooting first. And of course they added Jar-Jar :-/

I have to agree with you about the Christiansen ghost.

I remember back in 04 when me and some members of my family sat down to watch the “new improved” DVDs of the trilogy, my Mom, who’s in her 60’s and not near a fan of Star Wars as myself, saw Hayden Christiansen’s ghost pop-up at the end and she just yelled - WHAT???!!!

Never forgot that.

Her outrage was palpable..

it was just this gut reaction…. ;)

If I had to pick between a black robe a blazingly orange face I'd go with the black robe, although I'm not sure why you'd have to choose between the two. It looks like he's been spray painted.

This is how Obi Wan appeared in the original theatrical run:

Very, very natural flesh tone. On the pale side, if anything.

I jst watched the Lightsaber fight again:

Obi is NOT too orange. He may look a bit orange in that one pic but not in the overall clip I saw.

I'll settle for an "as close as possible to original" HD edition than no original HD edition at all, myself.

This project may not end up being perfect but then again what ever is...

I mean if Lucas decided to release the original theatrical versions in Bluray tommorow there would still be people not satisfied with something. The fact is that every official release of the OT for the home and theater was a little different in some way.

 No prob.

This project is making me a bit teary ... *sniff* ...There I'm better now.

I was looking back thru your test vids and discovered this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sSt_xEpK7mo  at 8:53 you can still see the Special Edition ships flying around in the sky behind luke and ob1. Don't forget to remove them. You probably already did it but just in case I'd  like to point it out.

Here's a test if the Luke and 3PO scene could be done just trough colour correction and here is a comparrison with the 2004 colours.

Well that looks great so far (I’m comparing it with my GOUT DVD right now) but I would tone down the reds a bit. Compare it yourself you will see that even though the sky is redder the rest of the image is not. As for the close up shot where Luke starts to say "its too dangerous..." That sky shot is totally different and requires a very red sunset.

Have you considered using a high resolution scan of a similar sunset and composite it in? It’s a very short shot.

Harmy, I just wanted to tell you that watching your ESB Despecilized on my 110" screen HD projector was one of the best movie experiences I’ve had in my life. Finally an HD Empire the way I remember it from my childhood! *tears up* I will tell every Star Wars fan I meet about it.

I absolutely can't wait for you to finish the other two. I anticipate them even more that Adywan's Revisited series even though I mostly loved ANH Revisited.

I was wondering if you are going to bring the scene with R2 while he's stalked by Jawas back to 'day time' as it was originally in ANH. Also are you also putting back in the red sky with 3po and Luke at the Lars homestead? Thanks in advance.
