Thanks for comparing the Pro7 vs mdr broadcasts, Kiba.

I’ll have to check out the Koura returning to Achmed scene vs. the official BD. Do you know what time on the Pro7 this occurs at?

According to Ernest Farino, the Pro7 Margiana boat scene is an alternate take. I’m wondering if this alternate take was used in the European prints and that most home video releases are using the US one. I remember reading online that the British VHS had the alternate take as well.

I also have tried a DVDlab version (maybe Pro?) about 10 years ago. At the time, I think it was one of the better ones, but the user interface wasn’t as friendly as DVD Architect Studio from memory. I noticed that the current layout looks very similar to the Vegas flow that DVD Architect Studio is part of. I don’t think I ever completed a project using it.

The 1995 laserdisc was made by the same company as the 1997 DVD, which is my source for audio. The audio was stretched to 5.1, but I compressed it down to mono using Handbrake. Sadly, it’s as close as I’m gonna get for now.

I have read that the 1997 Live DVD is basically the mono audio with some added sound effects to make it 5.1. I wonder if the effects are on separate tracks from the main audio?

It seems like Sky Cinema Nostalgie of Germany will be broadcasting Sindbads gefährliche Abenteuer (the German version of The Golden Voyage of Sinbad) Monday, September 11th at 14:20 - 16:05:
https://www.tvdigital.de/tv-sendung/sindbads-gefaehrliche-abenteuer/

Are there any German members out there that might be able to record this?

I’m hoping it’ll have the alternative angle pointed out by barhar earlier.

The first pic is from the full screen dvd, the second from a german satelite TV recording. Note the different positions of the boat.

The mkv source is from me. i recorded on TBS in the early 2000’s. It was broadcast in mono, but i didnt realize that the encode i did moved the mono sound to one channel. Nothing is absent in the sound you are hearing, its just all moved to one channel.

Correct. I watched both TV sources (Echo3’s and the BD extra). Both version feature the same cut. Quality between the two are very similar. The biggest difference is the BD extra does not have the TBS logo.

The TV cut honestly looks pretty rough, but I imagine that’s as good as it will ever look

I watched the TV cut and it’s different than the mkv that I saw. The mkv has a channel logo throughout and audio on one channel. I only watched the beginning of it as I got bogged down on doing A/B comparison with the movie cut before writing down the minute differences with time codes. I’ll have to watch it again and see if it’s the same cut as provided on the BD extras.

Regarding the broadcast TV cut on the BD set, that’s probably the version I saw on a major TV channel. I’m guessing Universal probably has broadcast quality tape somewhere, but probably due to budgetary reasons it was not used and we got a VHS recording instead.

I also saw a screening of the film last year after getting the spoRV release and thought the film’s colors were more blue. On my calibrated TV, the spoRV is actually a bit too red in some spots in the snow. I am waiting for the new BD to arrive, so I can’t comment on how it compares to the film screening that I attended.

Please let us know what you think after you’ve watched the new one.

I watched this last night after the discs arrived. The snow scenes has red spots similar to spoRV. It’s obviously something to do with my display. During a white wipe, the screen was white without any red. There must be some hue coming through on the snow scenes. My TV is calibrated with the same settings as a certified technician’s review of the same model. I’m guessing each set is a little off from each other. (And I thought this problem was solved over 10 years ago.)

I don’t remember if the night scene colors were quite that blue – probably not. I only distinctly remembered the snow colors on film as I watched spoRV version the night prior to the screening and worried if they appeared on film. The saucer in the ice at the Norwegian site looked realistically like glaciers.

What else… the new BD has a frame or so at the end of the dog imitation autopsy being out of focus. I don’t remember that before. There were a few other frames like that later in the film.

I still haven’t watched any of the special features besides the trailers. I’m very pleased that they finally included the teaser in HD, which was never released on DVD besides in France. Really curious if the TV cut is better quality than what I already have. Overall, it’s a great version with all the improved details.

Which are the correct colors? Who knows!

From this post the producer of The Thing, Stuart Cohen, wrote:

My own anecdotal belief, based on days spent in timing sessions and checking print runs, is that the Scream transfer is much more faithful to our original intent. The idea was to drain as much color from the film as possible - not only to give it that grey-blue COLD look - but in order to provide a platform for Robs stuff to explode on screen in all its Technicolor glory…

The first non-anamorphic DVD had the uncensored commentary. The subsequent releases were edited.

My opinion is that using the new BD with the old DVD uncensored commentary and standalone soundtrack is the way to go. However, this isn’t my project.

It all really depends on what Universal supplies them with? All that apparently exists of the tv cut of Halloween 2 is an old broadcast video master.

I’m not even sure if they are getting the TV footage from Universal. A lot of times, it seems like they are getting VHS recordings of TV broadcasts and not broadcast quality video.
