TFA: A Gentle Restructure (Released)

Things are moving forward! Here’s a new clip with all the good bits, from Rey leaving the castle and until her return.

Change list:
• Intercutting à la DominicCobb (new)
• Updated score without repeating parts (new)
• Better sound mix (new)
• “They’ve found us”
• No sunset TIEs
• My unnecessary wipe removed (new)
• Finn takes the lightsaber from Maz quicker
• “Those beasts” cut, “they’re here” left in

https://youtu.be/AWP1FJQyF6A

I have to admit that I don’t like the new intercutting. For me the scene worked better with the original cut. Everything else you did is fantastic though.

@NeverarGreat:
This could work. It would however create some continuity problems since Kylo’s shuttle arrives after the TIEs so it wouldn’t make sense to be the first ship to leave the Finalizer.
Also I don’t see the problems with the current version: Finn sees TIEs and runs back to find Rey (and the others). When he arrives at the castle Han and the other patrons just noticed the TIEs as well. The latter didn’t expect such an attack at all so their shock makes them slow to react but they are starting to realize that they have to flee. Han, Finn and Chewie on the other hand return to the castle to find Rey but instead they only find Maz who gives them the lightsaber.

I’ve tried editing the following scene a bit. I’ve removed the sunset TIE shot (replaced with a wipe), removed Maz saying “those beasts”, tightened up her giving the lightsaber to Finn and rescored most of the scene with some more “urgent” music since they know TIEs are approaching. The rescoring and cutting of the sunset shot also get rid of a part of the music that was inserted earlier when Finn spots the TIEs.

Once again: Very well done.

I would remove the wipe though since usually those are used to go to a completely different location or to show that a larger amount of time has passed. And none of that is the case here. Additionally it didn’t look right to me.
The only other thing: The “They’re here.” shot seems a little short to me. There’s probably nothing that can be done about it but I wanted to let you know.

And while it’s a shame that the TIE sunset shot had to go I didn’t miss it at all when watching your little edit and it didn’t really fit in this scene anyway.

@Hal:
I remember that at one point you did some tests with pilot reaction shots for the Starkiller sequence in the end. Since I haven’t seen your V1 edit: Did you use those in the end?

Open Vote for the priority of Time Code Removal from Deleted Scenes for The Force Awakens
Time

I know this is an old thread and I don’t know if you still have any intention on removing more timestamps, but if you do I suggest the “Leia and the Resistance” scene from the 3D Blu-ray. I’d love to see this scene in Hal’s restructure but with the timecode that’s currently not possible 😦

Thank you! I might be able to make it sound better, but I would need a better audio clip of Boyega saying something similar (the “ound” sound for “found”, especially). I found a clip where he said something about “five pound” that I used for this, but it was not ideal, so if anyone can find a better audio source I’d be happy.

It might also work better with a different musical cue, as some suggested. Any ideas about a part of the score which could be used here?

I’d say it’s really good already. Maybe you can play around with the pitch or tempo to make it flow more naturally. Although I have no knowledge when it comes to audio editing so maybe what I just wrote makes no sense^^

For the score: I posted my idea some days ago but here it is again: I used “Kylo Ren Arrives at the Battle” from the awards consideration score for the music. First the part from approximately 0:15 to 0:27 for Finns solo scene and then 0:45 to 0:55 for the rest of the scene. Keep in mind that the album version of this track is different!

The biggest thing that prevents this edit from working for me is the “It’s the First Order, they’ve done it” moment. Not just Finn’s dialogue but the music. It’s the tragic violin Starkiller Base music, where I think exciting action ramp-up music would now be more appropriate.

Some time ago I played around with that scene as well and I used “Kylo Ren Arrives at the Battle” from the awards consideration score for the music. First the part from approximately 0:15 to 0:27 for Finns solo scene and then 0:45 to 0:55 for the rest of the scene. Keep in mind that the album version of this track is different!

And for Finn’s line I suggest to wait for the upcoming movies. Maybe John Boyega says something like “They’re here.” or “They found us.” at some point so that this line can be used here.
But I think “They’ve done it.” works fine actually.

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story - Fan Edit Ideas thread...

since i am in the “no crawl for Rogue One” camp and i was disappointed in the hideous opening title card (Jason Ward of Making Star Wars said it looked like someone made it in MS Paint 5 minutes before the movie was released, and i have to agree with him) i decided to make my own title card. The following video is a mockup of the title card that was in the film and then i made 4 title cards of my own. i am trying to decide which one i like best for my inevitable edit of this film. let me know what you all think.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2qt3OVPpjAs

Really well done!

One minor thing: In the movie, there is also movement of the camera through the starfield, so that it’s not static. I really liked that effect and would like to see it in the reworked title crawl as well.

Now for the title itself: I really like the turning letters as in some of the trailers, but I would prefer if the title went away from the camera instead of coming closer. And I’d make that movement start earlier while they’re still turning or at least fade it in slower, since right now the turning and the movement afterwards seem very disconnected.
I also liked the idea of the “mirrored” lines appearing around the title itself but I wouldn’t go with STAR WARS: ROGUE ONE but keep the original title/logo with ROGUE ONE: A STAR WARS Story since I like the focus on Rogue One instead of Star Wars in the title and I’d keep it this way for the title card.

So my personal favorite would be number 4 with the official A Star Wars Story logo and a receding title.

Star Wars Episode I: Cloak Of Deception (Released)
Time

I was wondering if anyone could PM me the link to the latest (and fixed) audio track for Cloak of Deception. Thank you 😃

For the crawl: I really like your new one. Although I’d slightly edit the first paragraph (inspired by MalaStrana’s suggestions):

It is a time of decay in the Galactic Republic. In this turmoil of dissidence and corruption an ancient menace rises in the shadows of the galaxy.

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story - Fan Edit Ideas thread...
Time

I like the fact that the movie has no crawl, so I’d keep that. But I’d replace the movie logo with a version that has filled letters and probably even the metallic design seen on the official poster. And I would probably include the “A Star Wars Story” as well.

I really love the movie, so the only other thing I’d do is to cut the R2 and 3PO shot as that one felt forced unlike the other cameos/easter-eggs.

And if I may suggest a bigger change, it would be that the Tantive IV is not inside the flagship but instead the plans are sent to the Tantive IV while it’s on course to Tatooine where Leia was sent to find Obi-Wan. But that would obviously require more editing and I don’t even know if it’s worth it.

Feedback Please - Original Trilogy "Poster"
Time

Really great work with this poster!

I’m not 100% sold on Leia being in the middle but I see why you did it this way and I like the reasoning. But I would prefer another shot of Leia. I don’t really know why, her face looks a little weird to me but I can’t really describe what it is that bothers me.

Also I miss the Emperor on the poster but I wouldn’t know where to put him. He’d fit right below Vader instead of the Sandtrooper but then he’d seem less important / powerful than Vader which wouldn’t be the right thing to imply I think. But having him centered in the top would make him appear to be more important than he actually is, so I guess leaving him out is the right choice. But I still miss him and Ben.
As a sidenote: Having him in the top middle would be perfect for a prequel poster in this style I think.

And finally a question: How did you achieve this style? I assume you used Photoshop or something similar to make actual photos look painted. I’m asking because I tried this before but failed horribly while it looks amazing on your poster 😃

Color matching and prediction: color correction tool v1.3 released!
Time

I just used your tool for the first time to try to remove the teal tint of the AOTC blu-ray by comparing it to the DVD and I’m amazed! It worked great on my first try and it looks sooo much better.

But since this is not intended as a perfect color grading for AOTC but just a quick edit for my personal viewing at home, I figured that I don’t want to do the correction scene by scene or even shot by shot. So I took multiple frames, placed them next to each other in one image and tried to compare them. That worked quite well when taking four screenshots (thus creating a 4k image), but when I took 16 the progress bar of the progress bar did not move at all. Is that because I gave up too soon or is there some kind of image size limit?

Star Wars Despecialized Editions - Custom Bluray Set (Released)
Time

I’ve been trying to get the download links for the three 25 GB movie only discs, but njvc did not respond to my PM. He probably just missed it and will reply at some point but since my download speed is quite slow and he wants to take them down soon, I was wondering if anyone else could send me those three links so that I can get these masterpieces while I can.
Thank you very much 😃

The complete landing scene (including Leia hugging unknown Rey while Chewie is in the background walking…) should have been removed; following shot to be “sad Chewie and the others mourning”

I wonder if it would be possible to have Chewie hug Leia in the end by using their earlier hug at Maz’s place and moving it to the end of the film after SKB has been destroyed.

I wondered about that myself and I think it should be possible. IIRC Leia is wearing the same outfit, so “all” that needs to be done is to rotoscope the hug and add the base as a background.

Yeah, I really like that crawl as well. The only other things I would change about this edit would be to add replace Ewan McGregor’s voice with Alec Guinness’s during the force vision from this clip https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ThlaSITXROk and possibly replace Threepio’s line “Artoo Deeto may contain some much needed good news” with this line from the novelization https://www.speakpipe.com/voice-recorder/msg/e68bkypcnnp4h14m
Just a suggestion anyway, thanks. I absolutely love your Snoke hologram.

Where would I be able to see the Snoke hologram?
