Here’s a mockup of the scene without Rey’s running away lines:

I tried to do something different with the cuts and music before her lines, but Ridley’s version is better in that regard. I think the line omissions could work though.

One thing I thought of after uploading - The shot where Rey sees the attack force is worse than superfluous, now that we see the Finalizer. It also makes no tactical sense for Rey to go back to the castle since she has no hope of outrunning fighters that are already overhead, and indeed we see the results of her tactical error directly afterward.

Instead, she could look up into a deceptively clear sky, alerted by the sound of distant TIE fighters. This would also be a callback to the similar situation on Jakku - an organic form of character growth. The Apocalypse Now TIES would tie (sorry) into this idea, and it would make sense to seek shelter in the castle.

It’s funny, how many problems (and solutions) can cascade from a gentle restructure.

I prefer not cutting those lines as I feel that it’s part of Rey’s character development that she still tries to flee and get back to Jakku at this point. Only when she sees the First Order attack, does she realise that she can’t just leave her friends.

And I also disagree about there being no sense in her running to the castle when she sees the TIEs overhead. Well, of course the logical decision for her to make in this situation would be to stay out of the fight and flee with BB-8 to protect him, but she sees that her friends are in danger, so she rushes to help them or to at least find them. That’s a perfectly fine reaction in this situation, just the same as someone rushing into a burning house to save a friend or something similar.

Both of these edits are great. The only things that stood out to me were the missing BB-8 foley during and the “They’re charging the weapon now.” line in the briefing as well as the missing foley in the wide shot of the base. The latter wasn’t really a big deal and any foley in this scene should definetly be very quiet but the troops running towards the camera in the end felt really weird without any sound to accompany them.

Automated color grading and color matching with a Machine Learning Algorithm

Going off needed quite a few photos for references, in theory, could you just use one large high res photo that has multiple frames in it to get a quality lut out of it?

I don’t know if it will work for the automated color grading, but it did for DrDre’s color matching tool. I used that with 9 frames to get a LUT that regrades the AOTC Blu-ray to the DVD colors. This is of course not a perfect solution, but it gives good results.

And I’d assume the same holds for the automated color grading: It should work but won’t be as good as having the algorithm grade single scenes.

Just found this thread and I’m in awe. This looks really amazing and I’m definetly looking forward to its release.

One question though: Will the algorithm regrade the entire movie at once or do you give it individual scenes/shots that will then be regraded? I’m asking because in the latter case, scene wipes might be a problem (and also, just getting the entire movie regraded at once would be even more convenient^^).

Most of the problems you observe have been addressed in version 2 😃

There is the problem of the Hosnian System falling off the map before it is destroyed, but any mention of it after the briefing scene would have to be completely manufactured. I’ve been thinking about how to make them into a sympathetic party, and the best I can think of is building a scene during the assault with various shots in the Resistance base:

Taslin Brance staring at a computer screen (seen in the deleted scenes)
"General, are you seeing this?"
Newly recorded dialogue of a Republic official saying something like "You have our full financial support, but it will take some time to scramble any ships to help you"
Voice of C-3PO (over Leia looking concerned): “Oh my, without the Republic Fleet we’re doomed!”

What happened to this idea? Or generally speaking to any of the ideas that try to give a hint of why the Republic doesn’t help the Resistance in the battle? I kinda lost track of where these went.

I think the Black Leader line makes sense in the context of the scene. After all, Ackbar didn’t mention how the Oscillator was damaged.

As for the new implementation, it still feels like Ackbar isn’t talking with the X-wings. In my version I had reversed the shot so that Ackbar looked from Taslin Brance to the viewer as if addressing someone else, and I think that works better. It also needs something by way of introduction. I used a line from ROTJ, but surely there’s something that will work better.

That’s why I’d keep the “Looks like our friends got in.” line. Basically with this you’d replace the “Black leader, the oscillator is damaged” from the pilot with Ackbar’s version of the same line that also includes the added information of the oscillator still being functional. Then you keep the original line explaining how the damage came to be.

And I agree with your suggestion of reversing the shot.

Here’s my best attempt at implementing a revised X-wing sequence with Ackbar. Same as before, not perfect, but I don’t think anything stands out in a bad way.

I agree with Sir Ridley that Ackbar’s voice, at least in the shot from Poe’s X-Wing should sound more radio-processed. Also, I’d cut the “Black leader, there’s a brand new hole in that oscillator.” No reason to state that if Ackbar has just said the exact same thing. “Looks like our friends got in.” makes for a better response to Ackbar’s line.

I like the idea and the execution is promising, but I don’t think this should be included in this particular edit.

Don’t get me wrong. I like your ideas but unlike the added Snap dialog in the briefing scene which explains the Republic’s absence in the final battle and thus strengthens the restructure, this one is completely independant from the original goal. The same goes for your R2 edit as well.
From my point of view it might be better if you started your own edit based on Hal’s restructure to implement all these additional small changes. But in the end it’s Hal’s call of course 😃

Idea: EA Battlefront as a source of new footage for fan edits

Now if someone could get into the game engine and extract the models they built using scans of the physical models and figure out how to adapt them into a movie 3D rendering program, that’s a different story.

That’s been done already:

(I didn’t read through these threads but I’ve seen Battlefront models floating around the net so they must have been successful^^)

I don’t think that’d work. It’d be a very unusual jumping ahead in time with no scene in between. Keeping the sunset shot as a buffer might make it work but I don’t think so.

Also I think that in general it works better if the viewer has the same question as Finn: “Where’s Rey?” He asks that and we cut to Rey and only then see her decision to return. IMO that just flows better than having the (almost) complete Rey scene before Finn asks his question.

The continuity issue arises from the fact that during the briefing they reference ‘Snap’s reconnaissance data’, which implies he’s off getting that data during these scenes.

I always thought that the reconnaissance flight happened before they returned from Takodana, but you’re right that it probably happens afterwards. Anyway, he could already be back or not have left yet at this point, since we never really see the time necessary for that mission pass anyway.

Considering this reordering, there is a potential place for the deleted scene directly after Kylo’s tantrum. Here is the work in progress placed at this point in the reordered scenes:

JEDIT: Including Snap in the scene creates a continuity problem, so the first part may have to go.

How does the Snap part introduce a continuity problem? This is before they leave for their attack so why shouldn’t he be there?

I really do like this placement though. It flows very well and naturally.

Well done! I actually like the original score for the title card, so I personally wouldn’t change it, but your version definetly sounds great. Visually, I’d still prefer it to say “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story” instead of “Star Wars: Rogue One”, but that’s a minor thing really.

(minor observation - I notice on your 1st video that the starfield is stationary when you showed the original title, whereas the stars are moving in this version. I can’t recall if the starfield was moving in the actual movie title, or not…but I prefer it to be a stationary backdrop like the other movies, to be honest. Your new one reminded me more of a ‘Star Trek’ movie starfield instead. Very good work overall, though)

They do move in the original and I personally like the effect very much.

Isn’t it possible to use 3PO to deliver the line in a way he would say “The Republic won’t send reenforcement/ships/fleet ? We are doomed !” ? (note that Daniels made 3PO voice in TCW, I wonder if someone familiar enough with the show would know if there is a line to be taken from an episode)

Having him ask that question out of nowhere wouldn’t work I think.
Maybe he could be the one who asks about Republic support but I think it’d work better if someone else were to ask that question.
